challenging rhythm-platformer with a neat minimal artstyle — reminds me a lot of 140 in presentation and mechanics. the rainbow streak adds a lot of flavor, though I wonder how it would look if it didn’t reset between deaths. brilliant end screen, very nice touch.
having the jump on a different instrument each level was a bit disorienting, but I eventually got the hang of each rhythm. what killed me the most was the variable jump height, and while I usually love it in platformers, here it added another layer of difficulty that seemed unnecessary. especially as there were no rhythm element to it, just trial and error. also, some of the levels could use a bit more playtesting/polish, but overall this was a blast!
It took me so much time to figure out I was supposed to press X to start the game :D
But afterwards everything went smoothly, love the beats and the style is very fitting.
The rainbow VFX and the startup logo/menu shaders look incredible
Great submission!
Very creative! Never seen a game like this before. I suck at rhythm games so couldn't get very far, but very impressed by what you made!
Music is, of course, amazing (as expected from a rhythm game), and I love the artstyle you went for. I can imagine how long it must have taken you to get that shader/sfx in the menu working though - it looks great!
I'm kind of surprised that people are complimenting the music so much. It's an eight-second loop of a different pad for each level! But hey, sometimes that's all you need.
The main menu effect was a bit of an afterthought, honestly - I knew something like it was possible from seeing framebuffer effects on PS1 games, and I had the idea of using viewports from Raffaele Picca's talk at GodotCon 2023, so I think I had it done within an evening.
Thanks for playing!
This was great fun. Fantastic idea, had me bobbing my head to the music on every level, and the rainbow VFX on the jump trail really elevated the otherwise simple B&W visuals to make a visual style that was so much more than the sum of its parts -- I was really hoping that that would be where the Memory Lane part came in! I'd agree that the jump window could benefit from being just a touch more forgiving, but on the other hand that made it feel all the more rewarding when those nice streaks stacked up. One additional thing I wouldn't have minded is some way to see the "borders" of where the little void bubbles reach when they're expanded, as there were more than a few occasions where I lost a level because I was standing just a bit too close to the bubbles, but again that could be less a game design thing and more a me-being-terrible-at-platformers thing. All in all though, this was probably one of the entries I've had the most fun playing in this jam so far. Really awesome execution on a great idea!
You know what, one of my playtesters even suggested having a visible border on the voids. I thought, "nah, it'd look stupid", and moved on. Just goes to show that playtesting doesn't do much if you're too proud to listen to the suggestions you get. Thanks for playing!
good idea and nice execution. The beat window felt just a bit too precise to me. making more forgiving or adding a option for that would increae accessibility.
Wildly original - at least I don't think I've ever played a platformer that required a sense of rhythm to this extent. Also wildly annoying, I'm a drummer and I sucked at timing the jumps right! VFX really worked nicely here. Minor gripe: you had to press X to start and I only managed that but mashing all the keys on the keyboard randomly! Press stick to regular approved keys like Enter, Space, etc.!
Absolutely fair comment regarding the title screen, I'll change that. And I suspect there's some sort of input lag that I need to account for so that people have an easier time jumping on the beat. Thanks for playing!
Interesting combination of rhythm and platforming mechanics.
The core game loop was pretty fun, but I think the difficulty ramped up too much and too fast. I beat 3 levels and gave up on the 4th.
The visuals were really good, and the soundtrack paired really well with the game.
Thanks! The last two levels - four and five - are indeed quite frustrating, and perhaps more than they should have been; I even had playtesters telling me as much. Learning to admit that you need to change something with the deadline looming is a skill I haven't quite mastered yet...
I love the vfx of the game! Glad to see some rhythm game but IMO the windows input is a bit too small.
Had a great time playing it. I will look at your code! i'm curious about how you did some vfx!
That seems to be the consensus from a lot of players. I thought the window was quite generous - most levels have a beat every 0.4 seconds, and the window for jumping is 0.2 seconds - but I suspect some sort of input lag is causing the window to actually close a lot sooner than it should. I'd like to come back to it after the jam and see if that can be rectified. Thanks for playing!
I guess im also bad at rythim games, couldnt get past level 4, for me something that complicates the game is the varied height jump, I know its considered something good in platformers but in this case I would prefer to have the jump set to a certain height so I dont need to keep holding the button and loose my rythim. It looks quite good with the trail, death screen transition and smooth obstacle animation + the beats are nice !
Thank you! Looking back, I think a lot of the frustration comes from feeling as though you've jumped to the beat, only for your player to do a tiny hop and smack straight into a void. Maybe if there was some sort of crouch-then-jump mechanic, the player could know ahead of time if they had got the input right or not, and reacted accordingly...
Really great work on all the visuals. I was really impressed with the liquid-like effect you got from the wobble shader on the title screen. I checked out the project to see that working under-the-hood, so thanks for sharing the source code. I only made it to level 2, but it seems intentionally made for a different gamer/audience. Mechanically though, I liked the idea. I might come back to it when I'm feeling more rhythmic.
Great style and I love the rainbow-colors!
The title screen effect was inspired by a talk at last year's GodotCon, covering the various things you can do with viewports - it's a very versatile feature. Thanks for playing!
good job, this is a great entry
Thank you!
Nice one!! The visual effects are smooth as heck and the concept of a rhythm-platformer is really interesting. It was definitely not forgiving but kept me going until the end! I loved seeing the whole color trail unfold at the end of the game, that was a really satisfying reward for all the effort getting there.
Congrats on the great submission :D
With hindsight, I think the game teeters on being too difficult - I was in a rush to make the last few levels and didn't take the time to balance them properly. Either way, thanks for playing. :)
I love the visuals and audio! The trail effect is amazing and the beats are fun to play with. I realize now I am not very good with rhythm games when i have to use more than one button to the beat.
Come to think of it, I can't think of many other games where some actions must be done to the beat, but not others. Maybe it should be all one way or the other? Anyway, thanks for playing!
Love the audio and visuals!
This game made me realize how bad I actually am at rhythm games.
It looks like a lot of people had trouble with the controls. I might try experimenting with some sort of "tap to the beat" calibration phase to see if that helps at all. Thanks for playing!
I can't seem to be able to start it on Windows. The play/quit buttons get highlighted when pressing up and down, but I can't click them or press enter.
I believe you need to press X
You're right, thanks! Now I just need to improve my rythm ^^
