Awwww yeah! This is fantastic!! The production quality is insane for a one-person game, especially for your first jam!! Either the shooter part or the platforming bit would've been impressive on its own, but together it just blows my mind. The movement in both sections is snappy and satisfying, and would be more than enough to carry the game even without such a hilarious, off-the-wall plot to drive it along!

Everything starts out so delightfully ridiculous it's impossible not to get sucked in. Being recruited by God(!?), The Pickle Mafia, and Elliot's bemused sarcastic commentary keep things lighthearted even as Elliot finds himself in increasingly harrowing situations. Despite the absurdity there's a thread of sincerity that's surprisingly affecting, and I found myself genuinely wanting to see how everything was going to come to a close... which got me through some of those really tricky parts!

Great experience, I had a ton of fun!! The charm, the polish, the secrets, all knock it out of the park for me. I'd love to see how Elliot's story ends if you decide to finish it!! :D

Thank you soooooo much for this comment, it made me really happy! I beginned game dev this year and found a new passion in life, in a time that, for me, has been plagued by doubt. Seeing such positive feedback motivates me a lot :)

As I was writting the story, I felt the need to put something more personal amidst all that chaos, and I'm glad it kept you motivated to finish the game. I had a plan to combine the top-down and platforming in the final level with gravity swapping as you play with Elliot's dad. I actually programmed it and it exists in the game, but I wasn't able to finish the last level due to time constraints. I will surely go back to this project as soon as I get more time!

Really fun little game! The sound effects were particularly nice. The dialog was really well written– I was getting Disco Elysium "talking to my tie" vibes.  😂 The dialog implementation itself, control and feel were really enjoyable. Did you use any existing tools for it or write it from scratch?

The controls, for the most part, felt great– very easy to get into the flow and maneuver. I thought the bullet speed was nicely balanced. The aiming felt a little wonky, but perhaps a controller instead of kbd+mouse would have alleviated that?

The enemy AI in the final area got stuck along walls quite a bit, and I also missed the secrets you've mentioned after the ending, also thinking "Game jam time! 🤷"

Great work on this!

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback! I'm really glad you liked the dialogue, and yes, I made it from scratch, no tools.

I never did dialogue in my games before, so I didn't know what I was doing. I made a singleton to manage the dialogue and wrote a function to render the text. The final script has over 3000 lines and 1000 await calls, but it worked well for what I wanted. Normally you would store all the dialogue in a JSON and load what you want as far as I know.

For the secrets, if you are interested in going back, there is a hidden room in the first level (just hug the walls in the corridors) and there is also secret dialogue at the end if you keep messing with the "zero deaths mode" during the cutscene. At the beggining of the 2nd level, if you stand still in the apartment, God will start getting anxious and punish you. In some parts of the 2nd level, if you mash skip during the dialogue god will get pissed too. And finally, there is a secret corner at the end of the 2nd level that tells you how many secrets you found. I wasted way too much time making secrets...

This game is very relatable.

Also it is very fun, and I like it.

Thank you very much for the comment! I had a blast making this fever dream :)

Fun game, like the art and music is great. but got stuck in the second level :(

Maybe I will try again after reading the comment below.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I have to admit the level design on the 2nd level could use some work. I think it's not very clear where the player is supposed to go and there is a very steep dificulty curve out of nowhere. That is mainly why I added options to enable more jumps and immunity to spikes in the pause menu, as I had no time to address this problems

If you give the game a second try, there is a bunch of secrets to find  (:

Glad I've read the note about the two levels, so I got back and played the second level. Awesome game, I think this one is my favorite so far. Great music, fun dialogues, and both level mechanics feel pretty polished. I think in the second level, the dialogue got cut off for me, I feel like Imissed some instructions and figured the dash key (RMB) out just by accident after failing a lot. Still, the controls feel very good overall.
Good job!

Thank you so much for the feedback, I'm really glad you liked it!

The dialogue system is a mess of code, it was my first time trying it and I didn't know the best way to store all the text, so I just put all of it in the same file, resulting in a 3000 line script with a bunch of nested if statements and probably more than a 1000 await calls.

If I get back to this game in the future, I'll be sure to make tutorials for each level and a clearer level design

Hello people! This game has 2 playable levels!

I should have made it more clear, but if you hit Start after the 1st level sends you to the title screen, the opening dialogue changes!

The story cracked me up. Really well written. The fighting was really smooth. Really appreciated that the restart points were so frequent (thanks God). Solid game.

I'm really glad you liked! I don't know if people noticed, but when you finish the first level and are dragged to the title screen, if you hit start you'll have access to a new set of dialogue and a new level. There is also a bunch of secrets to find :)

I actually clicked start just in case. I left when I thought "oh yeah, not enough time for a boss, of course there isn't replay stuff". I was looking all over the start room. It just felt like there was more, but I was thinking it's a jam game - no time for secret stuff.

Imma go back and find stuff :)

Developer (1 edit)

I should have made it so after you clear the first level, the start screen buttons have different text, like "Start?" or "Continue" or something.
There is a secret room in the 1st level and a secret dialogue at the end of it that involves messing around in the options menu mid dialogue.

In the 2nd level, all the secrets involve annoying god by skipping specific parts of his dialogue and there is a "secret corner" that tells you how many secrets you found

Start? - that'd be really funny.

Very impressive on every level! I had a lot of difficulty finishing a certain section, but as the story captivated me, it gave me the strength and conviction to make it to Jon!

It's very inspiring to play a game like this!
