How does your game fit the theme?
The game features our Protagonist waiting in anticipation for an event. Other than that, there is a ticking clock sound for a half of the scene :)
Story / Context
This cutscene would happen in the middle of the game.
Our hero, Dick Storm, just fought the Mayor, turns out he was behind all of the hauntings that occurred in Riverbend! With the last breath Mayor tells Dick, that there is no way to stop opening of the Hellgate now!
With a little deduction Dick figures out, the hellgate is going to open where it all started- in the study of the Des Loges manor!
One reckless drive later he is there. Almost an hour early...
Proof of Real-Time Rendering
At any time during the cutscene, you can press P to turn on the spinning lights. You can move them with WSAD. The real time shadows don't work great in web build, but you should be able to notice the changes in lighting. There is also a windows build, where the dynamic shadows work correctly.

This cutscene does a great job of showing how Dick Storm is killing time until midnight. The large clock on screen combined with snapshots of what Dick is doing works very well.
The 2D elements within the 3D world create a unique style. The animations are well done, and the detail of the smartphone light on Dickās face shows that the designer is attentive to details.
The rising tension as midnight approaches, with the camera work and the turning cross, is effectively conveyed. Iād love to jump straight into a Doom-like shooter with Dick Storm after this cutscene. Would have loved to see some demon peeking or a glimpse of hell behind the door. But this end keeps us curious.
All in all, a great cutscene with a thrilling build-up—hopefully, weāll see more of this in a future game ;-)!
PS: The BBC tip was a fun bonus too—I didnāt know that either. :-)
I love it so much... the animations are so good! I hope I get to see Dick Storm again in the future.
Dick Storm became a go-to character for us lately, so that's entirely possible :D
Great animation. I agree with the comment below on a more dramatic ending. Thanks for the tip about the BBC sound effect library.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
As for ending, we aimed for something that says "and now gameplay happens!", so at first it ended with camera over the shoulder, sort of like new Resident Evil games. Because there's no gameplay this gave a rather abrupt ending, so we changed it to the zoom-and-spin last minute!
So many animations for main character in a really short time - amazing work. TIme shift is communicated nicely with a time on screen, thatās a nice touch. Ending could be accompanied by more dramatic soundtrack but I love it anyway
Thanks! It may seem like a lot of animations, but looking at it now, it's probably normal amount for my brother working in "jam mode". You can also notice, that since the cutscene is divided into two distinct pieces, so we could work in paralel pretty easily. The first part (before the clock strikes midnight) has one camera setup, but many animations- that's mostly on my brother. The later part has 5 or 6 camera positions, but only two animations. That was mostly me.
As for music, I thought about it, but in the end decided against it. I thought it distracted from the scene. Maybe if I had some better music :)
Anyway, glad you liked it!
Im quite the sucker for 2D/3D stuff, and this cutscene did not fail to deliver. the animation is awesome!
2D/3D stuff is how we do most of our projects. The reason being, I'm better at 3d programming, and my brother better at 2D graphics. Coincidentally, this plays well together, and creates our style :)
Glad you liked it!
Fun scene about a guy doing random things while waiting for the action. Would fit well as a moment of calm in the middle of a longer game. Neat you also went for a down time scene as opposed to an action scene.
Yeah, the "ticking clock" hit me more as "anticipation" than "last seconds before the bomb explodes" this time :)
Thanks for watching!
The way the scene is connected to a potential longer game is truly great, especially considering the context in which everything unfolds
I really liked the animations and the entire process of waiting for the protagonist. The variation in activities makes the scene feel very natural and vivid, without a doubt, excellent work!
Thanks, we really aimed for that- a cutscene, that feels like it belongs in the middle of the game!
All the praise for the animations is immediately passed to my brother, who made them :)
Oh I love your Dick Storm so much :D And I like the combination of 2D and 3D - its really nice and well done. My favorite animation is him munching. So cute!
I like the camera very much when the cross turns upside down. You can easily imagine this cutscene before a fight!
Some ambient music would have been great - or maybe even some comedic music while he is waiting.
I liked the style choice for the time - these big white numbers were nice.
Very awesome and totally cool Cutscene!
Big thanks! I really aimed for this to feel like it belonged right before some more dynamic gameplay, so I'm glad you felt that!
As for music, I felt like in the first part I wanted to sell the "not much happens" vibe. There are only three sound clips in the first part- ticking clock, light switch, and a quiet "thump", that startles Dick, when he's looking out the window. In the end we decided music would distract from that.
Really glad you liked it!
DICK STORM RETURNS!!! Really enjoyed this one. The 2D style of Mr. Storm works excellently with the background environment style. The montage leading up to midnight is a good idea, I just wish the poses had a little more personality (I liked the sandwich one a lot). My biggest critique is in regards to the text display for the different times leading up to midnight, the structure is great but something about the look of the text didn't work at all for me. Maybe if it was a bit smaller and bold or something? idk. But everything after the clock striking midnight I thought was awesome. the goblet falling off the shelf, the cross switching direction, and all the camera zooms were really well done. and the ending shot zooming over Dick's shoulder to enter the portal is badass. really enjoyed this one and want to see what's next!
Yeah, Dick Storm kinda became a go-to character for my jam projects. This is a... fifth one :D
Glad you liked the animations. The poses... if the jam was a bit longer, we would probably have more time to think them over. This time, we went with our first ideas :). The text... well, I took Unity's default font and ran with it.
The finale went through many tweaks, but in the end I got it the way I wanted (ok, maybe I'd still tweak some things a bit). One thing I knew from the start, was that I wanted to end it in the way that says "and then, the gameplay happens". It's a cutscene after all!
Anyway, glad you liked it!
