The game mechanics and how the fire, neutral, and ice works to open the door to the next level are awesome. I love it and the sound is also really really awesome.

The game has an interesting(So is the kid a sword now?) story to it. The mechanics are well-built thanks to the incredible level design. This game was a joy to play from beginning to end XD.

Developer

not really sure what you nean by the is the kid a sword part. There is a bug where if you spam the d key in the final cutscene it will skip all the dialogue so the ending won't make sense. When you collided with the sword did the player sprite disappear?

Submitted

No the player did not disappear. But I think I did spam d so that’s prob y

Really interesting concept, loving that background and the nordic theme.  The music really gives something good to the whole experience.

Great game! I loved the concept very well done. I really liked the overall level design, it have challenging levels, interesting mechanics and challenge variety. The visuals are great, the snow particles adds for a chilling effect. Loved the character and the story too! Very well done, great job!

Developer

Thank you so much. Yeah the level difficulty seems to be a common problem so I might have made things a bit too difficult. That's the problem of doing all the level design in a day I suppose haha. Thanks again for playing and I hope you enjoyed your time with it!

Very nicely done, great storytelling! The beginning reminded me of Shadow of the Colossus :)

My one qualm with it would be the use of W for jumping. A bit hard to be precise with that layout. But that's it, great entry! I encourage you to keep adding a storytelling element to your games, as you seem to understand what it entails. Something I need to start doing myself.

Fun game, Loved the animation and the sound effects.

Pretty simple and fun side scroller. Love the effort put into the story and cinematic.

Submitted(+1)

Really liked this game. I really like how your character has his feet on the ice. And the way he put his arm to protect himself too. It's some little detail but with the music and the fluidity of the gameplay, it creates a great game!

Submitted(+1)

This is very well done. The art and music blend well together to create a chilling, eerie atmosphere that managed to capture me from the opening cutscene. The key mechanic is introduced well and is an interesting twist on the theme. If you want to expand the game, there is certainly potential in creating all kinds of interesting and challenging puzzles with that key mechanic.

The controls are fine but could be improved a little. For the future, you could look into coyote time for example. Implementing that would make some of the platforming sections (especially those involving smaller platforms) feel a little smoother.

Great job on using temperature and health as a mechanic -  a very interesting choice, that worked very well! Having obstacles sometimes be useful to decreasing your temperature was a neat idea too, and it put an interesting spin on the typical platformer style.  One thing I would say, though, is that the key temperature and your temperature being different was a little annoying, especially when having to go back to heat it up, and not being able to see the target temperature at the start made for a lot of backtracking and wasn't too fun. It was quite a challenging game too - though that's not a bad thing!

The artwork was very nice, and I especially loved the background. That giant skeleton is so ominous, and it looks so good! The lighting effects around the fire helped distinguish it from the rest of the level, which was helpful when looking for them from afar. The freezing animation on death was a idea, but it sometimes didn't properly work, namely when I jumped on a bat - why I was jumping on a bat in the first place, don't ask. The music was a good choice for the game, and the sound effects added a lot to it as well.

I always love a good story-driven platforming sort of game, and this is no exception! There are a lot of good ideas, so very well done for making this game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much. There is definitely lots I would have prefered to polish out, finding the freezing on the bat thing was one I found after the jam submission so didn't patch (it's always the obscure ones that catch you out). Yeah the key and player temperature being seperate did cause some issues. If I had some better indicator that was a bit more accurate might have helped. Sadly I was hitting that deadline and I'm sure you could tell there was a lot of systems for me to playtest haha.

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I really appreciate the depth you went into and of course the time you took to write it!

The animation and the beginning voice was so atmospheric! it felt so much like shadow of the colossus, it brought back so much happy memories! I love the sound, music and art for this game! The key heating system is also very original and a nice hat tip to "temperature is key"! Nice work!

Developer (1 edit)

Haha thank you. I had really thought lots of people were going to use the tkey idea. I come from a bit of a voice acting back ground so knew I could definitely sell the game on the sound haha! Also thank you so much for the kind words!

Very nice game liked the little puzzle elements with the keys making them snow flakes and such to open the doors. Not sure if you made the pixel art or one of the people that helped you but they were really well done.

I like how you implemented the theme into the game having heat as your health was a nice idea :)

Was unable to get any ending but the one were the thermometer explodes.

Developer

Thank you very much. Yes I made all the pixel art, tough though it was. I never thought I was much of an artist but people seem impressed haha.

For the other ending you have to refuse the offer and leave the mountain again. It is something I might have to make clearer in future games.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

ah well then I should have tried that out going to have to replay again with this knowledge then

Submitted(+1)

Definitely an interesting experience. The music was pretty good and the sound effects worked well. It looks great, too! My only gripe is, as was mentioned, that last level with the bats can be a bit challenging, and the lack of a checkpoint sending the player all the way back to the start gets frustrating when it's caused by them. Overall solid game. Nice job!

Developer

Thanks, yeah balancing the difficulty is definitely a difficulty, particularly with the short time span, but had I the extra time there would have hopefully been more playtesting. I've not worked with checkpoint systems so far so it will have to be something I experiment with for my next game. Glad you enjoyed it!

This was a beautiful game - the background and sound effects really sell it! I really wasn't expecting something of this quality to come out in a beginner's game jam!

Good work!

Developer(+1)

Your comment has made my day, I'm delighted you think it's of high standard! I am proud of it and did put a lot to try to make it a good experience!

Great ominous ost, wish it was leading to something, felt like the end would be dark instead of it being a cliffhanger (or in this case cliffgazer) . Gameplay was intuitive and easy to pick up, i highly value that in games.

It was atmospheric game, i enjoyed it, although i would enjoy it more if it didn't had scaling issues on FHD ( 1920x1080 ), that broke my immersion:

All in all i'd love to see it as full fledged story game release. Good job guys, keep the good work up.

Developer

darn I thought I removed the ability to full-speed for that reason. Thanks for letting me know. That was something I realised after uploading to itch and thought I could cover up with itchs settings. It seems not haha. Thanks very much for the kind words!

Submitted(+1)

A very immersive experience. It was a good idea to combine health and temperature, feels intuitive. Also, there are multiple endings? How do you get them?

One gripe: when I go through the door at the end of a level, it looks like there's nothing behind it and the character falls down offscreen, with the camera following him for a split second. Look a bit weird, you may want to change that.

Otherwise, a very good entry!

Developer

yeah that was a bug I found the day after submission, I didn't get enough plastering in it seems. Thanks for the comments I appreciate it!

Developer

Also, sorry I forgot to answer your other question. Ending 1 you take the offer and pick up the sword, ending 2 you refuse the steep price and leave the mountain in search of another option

Submitted(+1)

The intro is amazing, it really gives me Chrono trigger to even SoTC vibes. The platforming was really good and wasn't clunky at all. and the temperature health was a very good idea on your part. Overall, this is a really great game with good atmosphere and Gameplay.

Developer(+1)

Thanks very much, I am really proud of the cutscenes, took ages to make too haha

Submitted(+1)

Gives me heavy shadow of the colossus vibes with audio and plot! Great idea making the temperature sort of a healthbar. Fun trying to speedrun your way through the level before you freeze to death. Very good job!

Developer

My friend said the same thing. I think its just the sad atmosphere, bringing someone back to life, and the giant skeleton really reminds people of SOTC

Looked great, sounded AMAZING! I loved the bit of story you had, and the mechanics fit in perfectly. I would love to see this become a full fledged game.
