When i saw the clone appear i knew this game was going to be amazing, its very fun and the clone people makes it super unique, i was concerned about getting confused if there was too many of them but that actually didnt happend because the artwork is really well thought.

Definetly i will come back to play it again.

Developer

glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately I can promise it gets confusing by round 20ish ;P

managed to survive till round 15 by staying in the center for as long as possible XD , I could see myself surviving till round 40 if i didnt have to keep collecting ammo , a really well made and polished game , well done

Developer

wow congrats! I didn't expect people to really play endless mode, let alone get that far! By 15 you had seen all the enemy types so the game didn't have a ton more to offer, minus an easter egg on round 17 where i switched all future versions to having a beard instead of a number since i ran out of number sprites ;P Glad you had fun!

I love the game design in this game and here's why

- The difficulty basically adjust themselves naturally with the clones mechanic.

- At first, it would seem like standing still would be the best strategy, but with the introduction of bullets and powerups, the player would still need to constantly move.

- The game is simple to understand, each action and foe are instantly recognizable, and you always know what they're going to do.

Now for somethings I think you can improve upon.

- With the game length, I think dying is too punishing right now, at least for me. True, it is hard to lose in this game, but it doesn't balance the punishing aspect of it. To solve this, maybe if a clone number "X" dies, only clone number "X + 1" and above dies too, and you start at the "X - 1" checkpoint. Does that make sense? Basically if a clone dies, only the clones that come after it dies, since it's a time travel game. It would make the game more interesting, but that might ruin the difficulty design you're going for, so just take it as a suggestion and do what you will.

-  The visual feedback from destroying enemies aren't satisfying enough. It felt like you weren't hitting them hard enough for it to feel "oomphy".

Overall, I think this is a really great game. I really had fun playing this, and all the criticisms I had were really just minor nitpicks.

Developer

I appriciate the in depth feedback! yeah, the dying can be punishing, perhaps i should have gone with the original idea of never setting the player back but just having them replay the round with 1 less clone, but the action continues to ramp up. It would eventually over power the player if they kept messing up but it would give them a second or third chance at the round. As for the enemy killing juice i definitely could have done a bit more with the visuals or sound i agree, i didn't match the juiciness of your game in that regard ;P

The feeling of starting over in any kind of game are all frustrating to me and this game taught me lesson to don't go much offensive at the start.

Its a little fun and new to me. I like this.

Developer

yeah restarting is never fun, but I'm glad you got a hang of it

This was really cool, my friend and I were laughing at the absurdity the whole time. Loved the art at the beginning cutscene!

Developer

glad you enjoyed it!

Brilliant idea, really well executed. You had a good amount of polish too, considering it was a game jam. You could definitely take this further with more enemy and level variety.

I have two minor gripes with the design that I think you could tackle to improve:

  • I found the optimal strategy was to stay in the middle of the level the entire time. I think this is a HUGE missed opportunity. I loved that you had to avoid the big bars / lasers that show up across the screen and so you have to avoid going to those areas in all your selves in order to be sure, but this makes it so that staying in the middle is optimal. I don't know what the solution is here, unfortunately. I would have liked more level variety.
  • I found it really punishing to have to replay parts of the game specifically because of how long each round is (or feels). You can reasonably expect new players to have to retry the game a couple of times, either from the start or from a specific round. 30 seconds doesn't seem like a long time at first glance, but those retries stackup. I think retries should be a shorter duration, but maybe amp up the action a bit to make it still challenging. I ended up retrying 5-6 times, then I got to round 10 and the original got hit (already happened to me before as well) so I decided to stop. The game is very fun but if you keep retrying, it can get tedious, and you want to stop because you get the gist of the game at that point.

I did really enjoy the game and the concept, despite the criticisms, I hope you can keep improving it!

I appreciate the in depth feedback! Yeah it was difficult to get a strategy other than camping in the middle to be viable with such a limited scope. Fun fact, orginally there was no limited ammo so the player had no reason to ever even move. The restarting isn't the most fun I admit, perhaps I should have only set the player back one round even if it made a little less narrative sense (who am i kidding my narrative is a paradox I could have done whatever) As for the round length, i tried a lot and 30 seconds was honestly the sweat spot, but that's just my opinion. You are right tho, i probably could have pumped up the action in some stages to make it feel less long, but i didn't want to overwhelm jam players just looking for a casual game so I saved the insanity and wild enemies for endless mode. Thanks again for the detailed feedback and sorry you missed out on the ending cutscene ;P but I'm glad you got to have some fun playing minus your frustrations

Submitted(+1)

Totally, I enjoyed it, no worries. Just to clarify, I mean that on retries you shrink down the time for a single round but you amp up the action a bit. I get that you still want it to be approachable and so it would still have to be balanced, but I feel like its possible. Thanks though.

Developer(+1)

that makes sense! Unfortunately i can't really change the round length since im recording the player and they need to play for the same amount of time every round, but there are definitely ways to handle second attempts better like you said.

High level of polish in presentation and gameplay! Game looks and feels great. At first I went for a circle the room strategy but after 1 and 2 kept killing me (gee, who are those guys?!) I went with the hunker down in the middle strat lol. Really enjoyed playing this and it deserves all the praise!

Developer(+1)

yeah unfortunately strategy goes out the window in favor of just huddling in the center, but i commend your attempt ;P

I had so much fun playing this! I really love the idea of seeing  past versions of yourself fighting with you. I haven't tried endless yet, but when I was 10th person in the story, it felt satisfyingly seeing an army ME HOLDING THE LINE! I have nothing to say in regards to critique, but overall thanks for the fun experience.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Nice art but a big win for me here is the idea. Wonderful !

Beautiful and well made game! It really cool

Submitted(+1)

The game is absolutely amazing. Very original concept and addicting. The mechanics were smooth and the enemies were well made (I especially liked the camouflage ones as they hid well in your peripheral vision).

However, I do not see a "connection" theme here unless it's like you are connecting with your past selves? Every other aspect of the game, however is fantastic, you are really talented!
Love the music too!

Developer

yeah the idea was your connected to the baby and your past selves in both the story and gameplay (your life/actions)

Submitted(+1)

I thought this was awesome, so far the most interesting take on the theme. I really enjoy the chaos as you get to like 10 past selves it starts becoming mayhem and I thrive for it. This was an excellent game!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun! I like how it encourages you to strategize with your past self. Great game!

Submitted(+1)

Great game mate!!

Submitted(+1)

Nice! It's a interesting type of a tower defense.  Would be interesting if past characters interfere with current, like being able to pick up bullets your bullets! Frenetic mode needed! Congrats

Developer(+1)

Originally the game had friendly fire, but it proved too impossible to actually play. I had hoped story mode would be easy for casual jam players and endless mode would be frenetic, but perhaps you are just too good ;P Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

oh, no! friendly fire is impossible! I was talking about those pick ups to recharge!

Submitted(+1)

It's fun! Addicting! You should definitely release it for mobile platforms!

Submitted(+1)

Pretty addictive gameplay loop! I like the concept of your ever growing army of... you. Good luck with the jam!

Submitted(+1)

That was awesome! Genuinely super fun game that I could see having the potential to get expanded into something you could sell.

I really liked the simpler art style personally but my only complaint is I feel like the art style limited the ways you could make the current iteration more visible. Perhaps lowering the opacity on the other iterations might help alleviate this.

The game was a nice little challenge and had a cute fun cutscene. Love it!

Developer

I appreciate the feedback! I tired to make the current player more clear, but I couldn't allow the past selves to blend in too much since they still need to be kept track of, perhaps a little desaturation would have helped though.

Submitted(+1)

Completely forgot about them still needing to be kept track of, wow I'm a clown. Ya that is a tough problem to fix but who knows, maybe I was the only one having it and I'm just bad haha.

Developer

Nah, you weren't the first to complain about that, I appreciate the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Really good. Very addictive and very challenging. Really well done.

I was a bit let down by the clash between the superb art in the intro and the simpler artstyle in the game, but that was quickly forgotten due to having to shoot aliens.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I was going for the retro box art/game art look, but with more time it would have been cool to do the whole game in the cover art style!

fun game ^o^
