Was the resolution a challenge?
I went with 3D with a lowered resolution, so I feel like I skipped over a lot of the possible hurdles that'd come with 2D, but the hardest thing was making sure the words on screen were legible (and I still may have failed at that in some places...), and making sure it isn't hard to tell what certain small/far away objects are.

What did you learn?
This is the first game that I can call complete that I did in 3D. Also my second finished game in Godot (used Unity before). Doing this made me that much more familiar with the Godot engine and gave me some (hopefully) good fundamentals for making 3D games, as well as teaching me some things that could have been done better or more efficiently.

Really liked the 3D menu system (what's that object in the corner you can pick up?) and the core game mechanics were simple and fun, though a little repetitive. I think the textures and models could be made to fit the lower resolution a bit better though, often it was hard to tell what something was.

Developer

Thank you! I've always liked the idea of experimenting with more immersive menu systems and this one was fun to play with. I think the object you're talking about is the characters glasses (assuming it's the one on the bedside table next to the alarm clock). Definitely very repetitive at this point, I would love to add some sort of power up system though that'd change things up the longer you survive for though. Adding different weapons and things like that. And that was definitely a big challenge, being able to see clearly what things are, but that's also part of the challenge for the player, with the player character lacking their glasses and all ;)

Thanks for playing!

Not the glasses... this object in the corner (also while taking this SS I found you can open the door as well)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Oh that one! That's just the shotgun leaning against the wall. Originally this was going to be a stealth game, and that opening door interaction is a left over from that version of the game. Picking up the shotgun was also the final objective of that version, so you can pick it up, but doing it in the menu for this version doesn't do anything  (I actually forgot you could pick it up until I went back into the game and clicked on it in the menu lol) But yeah, just thought it would be fun to leave those things in the menu to poke at.

I won't pretend I'm not terrible at this game, but it was fun! I loved the voice work and the puns, and the surreal story. My longest time was 41 seconds spent running in terror in a circle until I got hung up on some rocks and presumably ripped to pieces. The most scared I was was when I realized that there was a 20 foot tall monster (presumably my deceased arch rival) at the center of the pack of lions I was still at that point trying to fight. The shooting felt great, even if I think I only managed to hit something two or three times...FPS might not be my strongest genre lol. Really impressed at how well this worked with the size constraints, great job! You should feel a lot of...pride.

Developer

Thanks! The difficulty in this game is definitely ramped up due to how little variation there is lol I'm glad you enjoyed it, it 's wonderful to read your experience with it. And yes the 20 foot tall monster is some weird mutated version of your deceased arch rival haha at least that's how I picture it, but it's a dream so the player can think what they want.

Thanks for playing!

This was so fun! I was impressed that you made a 3D game in 64x64, and I really enjoyed all the sound effects and animations. I'm also happy to see that you made it in Godot :D

Developer

Thank you! Yeah I've been seeing a lot of games made in Godot for this jam, very cool to see!

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Coll to see some 3D games mixed in here. I liked the movement a lot. Jumping around while the lions were chasing me was fun!

Developer

Yeah I'm happy with how the movement turned out! I love fast FPS controls.

Thanks for playing!

Awesome looking game. There is a great framework here for a more fleshed-out FPS! I survived 46 seconds with my backwards kiting technique. 🤭

Developer

Thank you! I definitely have plans to flesh this out more in the future, we'll see what happens. Very nice! Kiting is the lion's one weakness ;)

Thanks for playing!

I actually got a pretty good jump scare on the first play. Not knowing what to expect, I think I got mauled in about 2 seconds and my volume was at max, lol.

Developer(+1)

Hahaha nice. Yeah a sound warning might be a good idea, however in future iterations there might be less enemies on screen at once compared to this, so hopefully the sound won't be as crazy haha

My best score was 91s \o/ I ain't Lion ;)

Really fun, I like the doom jump sound too, its like mad max on hyperdrive and pixelated ^^ the font could look better but that's just a minor issue, great game! :)

Developer(+1)

Nice! Getting close to the world record there haha (I think my highest was 99)

The font is definitely the thing that gave me the most trouble, looking back on it now post jam though I think there may have been a couple ways to make it better that I want to check out.

Thanks for playing!

Hehehe great little shooter! 😁 It was pretty hard, but I managed to get 31 seconds 😎 Loved the humor too.

But as one Godot dev to another, make a production build next time so we don’t see all your warnings popping up in the console 😜 Also a quit button would be great, ALT+F4 is so 2005 😂

Keep it up, hope to see you in a future jam!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!

I'll have to look into that, I was wondering if there was a way to not have  that window there hahaha thanks for letting me know. Only my second game made in Godot so I'm still pretty clueless about a lot of things

There IS a quit button actually, clicking on the glasses next to the alarm clock quits the game.

Thanks for playing!

It felt like a low poly Resident Evil, only thing I'd add is a mini map.

Developer

Thank you! The level itself is pretty small, although a mini map with enemy locations isn't a bad idea. I'll definitely consider that for future updates.

Thanks for playing!

Music, sound and voices are nice! The graphics with this resolution are very confusing and blury. Using more simplistic backbround could improve this a lot. Good job anyway!

Developer(+1)

Yeah the cage boundaries at the edge of the level didn't get along well with the resolution at all. I'll probably end up either taking them out, or just upping the resolution for future versions since the limit for the jam won't be there any more.

Thanks for playing!

Heh, those low-poly, low-rez lions are terrifying.

Developer

Yes they are, especially in numbers! Thanks for playing!

Was gonna play one more game before sleep but I don't think I can now xD

Developer(+1)

Haha I'm glad you liked it! It is definitely a bit addicting :D Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

It was addictive indeed but I was also scared of that upright lion. Thought the game was nightmare inducing but fun lol

Really liked the fast movement. Controls felt responsive. I also enjoyed the humor "No time for lion around" and the gasp sound after you wake up had me laughing. Nice game!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad the controls felt good! Gotta give credit to my friend Andy for that voice line, just had to use it for the game.

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
