As this is essentially a rage platformer, I think it would be better if you ditched the lives system. But nonetheless I enjoyed getting trolled by it.

How does your game fit the theme "Unconventional Means"?
Classic elements of a typical platforming game were changed to effect the player in unconventional & unexpected means (i.e collecting coins make you die).
Comments
yeah I've gotten that comment a few times, can definitely take it out!
I didn't really want it to be a rage platformer, which is why each item works the same way all the time (although, it may not work in the way you would expect, based first appearance...if that makes sense.) No trick, a coin will always hurt you, a metal platform will always disappear, gaps can always be walked over, etc...
thanks for playing! :)
The Pigeon's Adventure in the City Ups and Downs
Ups:
- Graphics and audio are really good and appealing
- Very goofy and original concept that works well with the theme of the jam
Downs:
- It's really hard to play. I know that's the point, but a game like this that's uses a lot of trail and error ends up being really frustrating (kind of like 'I am The Man: The Movie: The Game')
Overall, a charming but very tough game
I got stuck on the tutorial, first level with the coin. I got to the right of the screen, but nothing happened. How do you gain score in this game? When picking up the coins, I lose a life. Not sure if that is an intended mechanic or a troll, as part of unconvential means.
Outside of the bugs, great game, though its difficulty really spikes, especially outside of tutorial when limited to 3 lives. Again I dont understand how to gain score, as when I pick up coins I die, so I might be a noob. Maybe some clarity on that end.
One last thing to note, the mechanic where the controls get fliped is really fun and interesting. Maybe add some sort of transition or even text on the screen to let the player know when this is happening (almost like a warioware game), as I can see this mechanic going from fun to frusterating really quickly.
Overall though, while a bit buggy, this is fun, creative, and all connected through an urban theme really well. Keep going!
I've never encountered that bug...so I not sure why it would do that. What version did you play (webGL, windows, or mac)?
You gain score by collecting the toxic waste. Yes, coins do hurt you. Basically, everything you'd conventionally think would hurt you, don't and vice versa. That's how it fits the theme.
Anytime you start on the reversed side of the screen (right), the controls are reversed. I personally think that is better to indicate the change in controls than just putting text on the screen (except for maybe in the tutorial section, where I can clarify that).
hope that answered your questions. thanks for playing! :)
Coreylr197 I played webgl build. I did tutorial twice and got stuck on I think 3rd level (where the coin is introduced). I dont think its beatable at the moment.
idk I can finish all levels of the tutorial fine in the webGL build on two different computers (windows and mac) and I haven't gotten that feedback from anyone else, so it must be something on your computer. Can you provide a screenshot of you getting to the end of that level so I can try and fix the issue post-jam?
This game was a lot of fun. It looks and sounds really good, and the platforming physics feel good. I like the levels where your controls are inverted, since you have to rethink what you're doing. I do wish there wasn't any life system, cause the novelty of figuring out each level fades after playing it multiple times. But this is still a very great game. Great Job.
Great game! The moment I started playing I immediately liked the music, which gave me a good first impression for the game. The graphics are also really good, as well as the level transitions, and I enjoyed the puzzles / levels a lot too. Your game mechanic was also a neat response to the theme.
I think one of the only issues I found were that, while the whole "twist on the platformer norm" was cool, it began to feel more and more like a regular platformer later in the game (such as how platforms were added that I COULD stand on, kind of taking away from the idea that "in this game, you don't actually jump on the platforms.") Other than that though, I liked this game a lot. Well done!
Wow! This was very unconventional! Liked the sounds, and the art so much! I hope that no birdie was hurt during the jam time! ^^
This is a very fun game! It's always cool to see platformers that break common conventions. I really like the visuals and the sounds (especially the jump sound)! I'm not sure how I feel about the lives system. Nothing about the game felt frustrating so I had no issues with it, but if there were more levels it could make the game a lot more tense. If you work on this more post-jam and add more levels it might be good to also add a way to get extra lives, (maybe every couple of points added to your score gets you an extra life).
Overall, great job!
Nice take on the theme, but I found the introduction of many mechanics to be confusing. For example, walking on air was something that I initially though was me simply walking on ground that I didn't see. The lives system is also very unnecessary for this, and would be better suited with level oriented progression. With a little polishing and improved level design, this could be a great puzzle-like platformer. Good work!
Really enjoyed this one. Clever use of the theme :)
It was really smart to make the player able to walk in the air, really unconventional.
The sounds and music are also good.
Great entry :)
very good sound design! The reversed controls threw me off - maybe that was intentional?
Great use of the theme!! Was fun the way you broke typical platforming rules! xD The art was nice too! Awesome job on this! :D
I really like the idea, but the controls feel abit too slippery and it feels abit random wether you land a jump or not. Great game, I had alot of fun playing
Had fun playing this game and the sound effects were on spot. Overall, a awesome game!
