Nice game bro, I liked it

Great graphics, enjoyable music, challenging gameplay. I like it a lot!

It is telling that your greatest enemy is not from outside but within as the king makes your life too hard.

Developer

Fun fact, if you look in the game files, with various methods... you can see this :

Thats the actual sprite of the king :)

Awesome game! I like the cool pixel art and the animations, a well made game,  the controls are simple and easy to manage, the goal is clear ,  good learning curve on how to hit the enemy hordes at the proper time is quite a challenge,  at first I forgot to pay the taxes, which is important in keeping the kingdom alive, the gameplay is appropriate with the limitation .  Overall I enjoyed playing this one! congratulations! keep it up!

Just perfect. I loved it. Fun, nice graphics, some good progressing. Though you can get to break game with certain improvements that prevents enemies to get close. I put a bottle on the space bar and left out for about 30 waves, let them kill me. Also, camera shake, while it felt good first, easily gave me motion sickness. Needs an option to turn off. Definitely the best game I played this jam. Well done

Developer

Thx, yeah the camera shake is on my "to fix list", and you give me the idea to create an auto-shoot option, thanks !

The game is very polished and had a great opening. The difficulty was a little high, but that encourages that gameplay loop. This game is the best I've played as a fully fleshed out title.

One of the best games I've played so far in this jam. I felt a bit frustrated by the difficulty as I wanted to try out all the upgrades but couldn't get far enough for that (my best run was wave 25 or something).

The game is very polished and the whole concept is quite good. Was very fun to play. Great work :)

I had a ton of fun with this game, played it twice and got to something like wave 17. Graphics and sound are great, the shooting and upgrades feel very good, the mechanics and win/failure conditions are well thought out. Excellent game, very happy to have played it.

Developer

Glad you like it, I will test your game soon !

Okay, this was probably one of if not the best submission so far... First of all, the art style: The cool background art with parallax effects, and the shines of the sun through the trees, amazing... The kingdom, the archer, the monsters, and the arrows were also very pleasing... The upgrade menu was also well-designed, nice to look at, not overly cluttered, while being easy to understand. Next, the gameplay loop was also pretty fun, nothing I've never seen before but definitely well-executed, and challenging enough that it's fun. What made it even more fun is the upgrade system, where you can become super overpowered in a matter of seconds! (maybe an over exaggeration but you get the point).

Now let's talk about the tax system, absolutely incredible... A clever way of making the game include more strategic thought into it, whilst at the same time adding another layer of difficulty curve. This was honestly a pretty surprising thing to see in a game jam, but it probably follows a textbook rule from somewhere out there, and it's implemented hella good. Next, the audio, the ambience with birds chirping and such, very soothing to listen to. The shot of the arrows deliver weight to them, and the impact of them on the enemies carries so much JUICE.

There isn't much negative things I could say about this but if I absolutely had to mention something that could be made better is the screen shake. It made sense with less arrows, but when it came to the later rounds, it got pretty chaotic that the screen was never still. Also, a boss would be nice, but taking into account that only 3 days were put into this, this already had plenty of content to be content with (pun intended).

I don't know about the other comments, but to me, the difficulty was fine, it was challenging but fun, (the randomness in the arrows was not a problem considering an upgrade could situate that), up to a certain point where I had all the upgrades and pretty much have nothing else to do, no enemies can even come close unless I purposely lose (which I did when I had like 200000+ coins, sad the knight costs way more than that). If you were to make this into a full game, which you absolutely should if you want to, I think difficulty options needs to be added. To be quite honest, this game has the potential to be a quite successful maybe mobile game, or pc game. I'm thinking if you could make it fit into the roguelite genre, it would absolutely SLAP. Just add a bunch more content and polish and you have yourself a possible indie hit.

Ok anyway this review is getting quite too long. Great game, loved it!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your looooong but really pleasant to read review, with both positive and negative points (perfection doesn't exist). The tax system was very inspired by the roguelite : The binding of Isaac, where you can trade health points for powerful upgrades, that's basically the same idea here, you can put you in danger but you get access to more fire power, classic risk/reward mechanic.

For the screen shake you are totally right, the problem is that each shake stack with the others, leading to an earthquake when the shot rate and multiple shots are acquired.

if you have reached 200000+ gold, you had a taste of real power :) I didn't had the time to make a new enemies archetypes with 4HP or more to counter the OP endgame DPS, so passing wave 30 I spawn 18 mobs per second, but it's clearly far from enough to reach the wall...

Spoiler : the knights doesn't even exists. I didn't had time to code them... So  9 999 999 gold for nothing is pretty expansive I guess : )

An interesting take on the survival game! I found the aiming to be a little wonky though. When you aim and shoot, and then shoot again, the arrow seems to fall shorter than the first. Maybe that was done to prevent the player from finding a sweet spot to leave it? Presentation was pretty great, very polished from what I can tell. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thx, for the aiming, it's just random arrow spread, like in FPS or other shooting games, it's to bring a bit of "realism" ,and to add chaos to the game. Having arrows landing everytime at the same location is pretty boring, mainly visually speaking. But you are right I think : there is maybe to much spread. Anyway, you can invest in the accuracy upgrade to "train" your bowmans, and to reduce the spread to a 3° arc.

Very good game! The controls (as well as the game) are a bit difficult, however the concept is very interesting. And I also like the initial way of telling the game. This game can have a good market if polished up further and made into a bigger game. Overall, a very good archery game :D

I loved the game idea as it made me remember a flash game, I used to play all the time where you had to pick between different archers at the beginning (ice, fire, electric) => arrows effects. I think it is awesome for the amount of time we all had to create a game that you made this very polished and quite challenging game. I arrived at wave 5 and lost after that. I think that the taxes grow too much especially when you don't get in off gold when you learn the basics of the game. With more tries I think I could bear with the very low fire rate and improve at the early game phase.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, and thx for passing by.

Mmmh elemental damage you said... nice idea, very inspiring. A fire arrow with area of effect could be nice !

Pro tips : you don't have to pay the tax every time (you have 3 life after all) and it's more beneficial to not pay the tax when it is expensive( at the endgame) but you can also skip first tax to get good DPS more quickly. Also don't spend your first coins on speed, accuracy and knockback upgrades, try to get a 2nd archer and DPS upgrade as soon as possible. Thats why I said this game is also a ressource management game, you need to manage gold properly. If you make a perfect build, you could reach the wave 30+ and you can last probably to infinity ( I didn't try)

A very fun archery game with lovely art! It's pretty difficult but in a fun way. I loved the realistic implementation of taxes! xD

Developer(+1)

Pay the taxes villagers or thou shalt be punished by the king !
