Use of the limitation
In this game, the player's score is what temperature they're at. Each level has a specific zone that you need to be in to survive, and if you're too far below or too far above, you die. So essentially, your score serves the purpose of making you not die.

Neat little game, solid platforming controls. Some of the puzzle elements can be a little hard to figure out, though.
Thanks for the comment! I've had a lot of other people say the same thing and I always attribute it to my complete lack of communication. Besides the How To section and the itch page itself, you're not really taught how to use any mechanics, instead having to figure them out yourself, which while allowing the player to discover and learn these new mechanics WAS the intention, some of them can be tricky to figure out with nothing to go off of.
I'll be honest, on the level with 16 temperature where I kept dying, I thought "There's no way I have to..." as I was clicking the coats on screen. Turns out, that WAS the solution. Whoops.
Love the art and sound! I really like the idea but I feel like it would be better if you just automatically picked up the coats rather than having to press E. Also the bridges are raised off the ground meaning that you cant run over them and instead have to jump. Lastly I reached a level where no matter what I did there was not enough coats, I don't know if I was missing something.
Thanks for the comment!
I've seen other people suggest the same thing with coat collecting, but I stand by my decision to use the E key because then if you find a coat but don't want it, you don't have to grab it. It's slightly more inconvenient to automatically grab it and have to put it down to avoid dying of heat stroke
The bridge thing is likely just a result of the way I used tilemaps to build levels. I've seen others talk about the same thing and I didn't think it was that noteworthy. But I'm glad I was wrong. That's the best part about being criticized; you learn about stuff that you didn't think was an issue but others did.
Finally, you probably were missing something, but I take full responsibility for that and I'm fully aware that communication is one of the game's weak points. Here's what might be useful that I didn't properly explain in game:
As I've said in other comments, this lack of communication was part of my desire to let players learn and discover on their own. However I should have at least given them something to go off of. That's definitely something I'll take note of in future!
Good level design and creative idea!
Would be extra nice to add text like "Press [E]" over the coats. This is fairly intuitive binding, but I still had to go to the menu and read how to play section haha
Thanks for the comment! I agree, I probably should have put some kind of prompt indicator on the coats.
Great artistry here (art, music, animations) and the levels are well done! If I were to have one criticism, the jump animation feels a little bit unresponsive or laggy (it feels like you start jumping a second after you actually press the button). Pretty well done game!
Thanks for your comment! I saw someone else point out the delayed jump and like I said there, I didn't realize or notice when testing. Sorry if that hurt the experience at all.
The presentation was really well done, loved the artwork and music, and the movement/gameplay smooth. Great game!
Also, it seems the level doesn't render when I play in firefox, had to switch to chrome.
Thanks for those awesomely kind words! The WebGL build wasn't that heavily tested and honestly that's entirely my fault. I submitted the game 3 hours early so I had way more than enough time to make sure everything worked properly on as many browsers as I could think of, but I just didn't do that. So yeah...sorry about that.
This was a great little game! I really enjoyed towards the end where you have to pick which clothes to keep on and which to take off. The artwork was really cute too!
Thank youuu!
Amazing art & animation!! Love the concept of collecting coats.
Thanks for the comment!
This is some good stuff. Very well-made visuals and fun gameplay. And the WebGL version works very well with no issues.
I think some people are getting stuck on that level where you have to jump down to get the last coat because you have to go down from the left side of the starting platform. If you go down from the right side of the starting platform you get teleported back, which makes people think there is nothing below that part, so they don't try from the other side.
A polished game and nicely done mechanics overall. Good job.
Thanks a lot for the comment! I've probably said this in other comments, but people not knowing you can go left and jump down is definitely because I didn't communicate how to use some mechanics, hoping the player would discover themselves. The lack of communication is definitely something to take note of and avoid for any future games I work on.
I do like that idea of players discovering this on their own, but it could really use some natural way to discover those in gameplay. Maybe have a more obvious secret platform in an earlier level so players know to look, or let them catch a glimpse if they fall in one of the other pits
Nice work! Pixel art is excellent.
Thanks for the comment! I agree, Cannoli did a superb job with the art.
Hm...the web version seems unresponsive. I couldn't get them to move at all. the menu was nice. art is fab. just letting you know the web one seems to not be working for player movement.
Thanks for the comment. I don't know why the web version would've been unresponsive, since it was working on my end and there haven't been any other reports of WebGL unresponsiveness, but it still really sucks that it happened to you. :(
This was really fun! Cool concept and the Sprites and Animations look amazing!
Thanks! I'm glad you had a fun time with the game!
What a charming game! The animations are clean and detailed, and the background elements are polished and pretty. The overall style is really put together, except for the UI elements which feel lackluster compared to the rest of the assets.
For some reason I am stuck on one of the levels, but it's probably by design and supposed to be the last one. I would've loved seeing an ending animation to the game after completing all the levels!
The mechanics of the game were easy to understand in my opinion, and I liked retrying the levels until I had the right combination of clothing to be able to progress further.
Overall a great experience which, in my opinion, could be perfected with more of those great animations and some UI polish!
I agree, I probably could've polished the UI more.
If you mean the level that has the "Thanks for playing" text on it, yeah, that's the last level. Cannoli actually made an animation for the ending, but I thought it would be awkward in the actual game, since it wouldn't have any music. Looking back, though, I could've made it work.
I've seen other people not understand the game's mechanics, so I'm happy to know you got a good grasp on it. Even with my admittedly sub-par, slash nonexistent, communication. (this was because I wanted the player to discover and learn the mechanics on their own)
Yeah. thanks so much for the comment!
Wow, this game is packed with personality and charm! The polish and fun factor is off the charts. The animations and character designs are fantastic, they really stand out. The mechanics are so much fun, it's hard to put down. The soundtrack is also a blast, it adds to the overall excitement of the game. Great job on the exceptional work, this game is amazing! Died a few times before realizing that heatstroke was a mechanic, but once I caught on, it added an extra level of challenge that was really cool. Keep up the good work!
Wow, I legitimately couldn't have expected someone to have enjoyed Coat Collector this much...thank you so so much for your kind words! 💚
love the artstyle and concept but i think how the jump feels a little unresponsive hinders my enjoyment a lot
other than that well done i really like this one
Thanks so much for the comment! Sorry that the jump was unresponsive for you. I rarely had problems with it in testing so I just assumed it was all good.
Love the art and mechanics. For some reason I got stuck around level 3 or 4 and couldn't figure out how to get the right temperature to complete it.
Thanks for the comment! Here are some notes that pertain to both levels:
I didn't have any sort of communication for either of these because I was hoping that the player would discover on their own. But neither of these were 100% clear to figure out, so I get it if you got stuck and I'll definitely make an effort to more clearly communicate things to the player in future.
