Great use of the limitation and solid presentation, I wish there was more feedback to the player in the form of audio and maybe gradually counting the coins to visualize the multiplier effect. It kind of all happens so fast it was hard to understand. Looking at the code cleared up my questions though. Good job!
A simple but fun game, it will be interesting to see the idea expanded on.
Also, I noticed that the info box that you can open up on the side of the screen appears behind everything else, which makes it hard to read and close.
Very fun game, I love the art style. Great job!
I love this! A simple yet intriguing ruleset presented well with cute graphics. I bet it will be even cuter with little sound effects (300/0) ^ ^
I haven't played Balatro, but the rule is very well balanced. Clearing the rounds isn't hard, but it's quite an enjoyable experience for me. I think it will also make a nice endless game!
(If I were to get picky, maybe the scoring rule can be unfolded right at the beginning to make a clearer introduction.)
Thank you!! definitely want to add some fun coin flipping sound effects, I'm glad you enjoyed the rule-set and look of the game ^^
A very fun game with interesting mechanics, and the art style is super captivating. It’s truly addictive!
Thank you! Really happy with it overall
Apologize for all the words, I will also include a TLDR.
This is a really sick entry so all feedback I give will have the caviate of "but considering this is a jam game, like its hard to find time during the rush haha"
This game very much leans into the gambling side of coins but in very Balatro way where you kind of upgrade your scoring methods to try and score more. My best was 15000 on a really really good hand.
I did find a strat that consistently can get you to the end of the game, which was to always take coin upgrades and bet everything on one face. This very rarely failed for me since the scores required to win wasn't to largest. Reflips didn't feel necessary to upgrade since it would take so long to make coins individually. Since you could just flip another coin for the same effect, and luck can never invalidate more coins.
What I mean about that is that new coins and reflips are basically identical. They give you a chance to get a *hit* and the hit has the same odds 50/50. But if you take reflips and you hit perfectly, then left over reflips are burned.
Looking at the other comments and it seems there is value in using reflips to fix combos, but as it stands the game never requires you to get combos to win. Not inherently a problem but something worth considering is that if a games difficulty doesn't require you to understand a mechanic, players wont use it or see need for it.
I do think having this game be a highscore chaser is very very smart. It kind of addresses the above issues in some ways. Reflips help you get combos, however their is the problem that in a "optimal run" for max possible score, reflips are still not great since they lower your score potential for consistency. Which isnt bad! if this was more so a long form game or something multiplayer where you compare scores it would work super well I think, so there is alot of really smart design at play here!
This was alot of fun, and as mentioned my best was 15k on a hand of like 12 coins all heads at like 100-200 points or something. Was wild and definitely gave me that gamblers high hehe.
Presentation wise the game is sooo cute, would love for there to be sounds and animation on the dealer. The game had really great clarity, I was able to learn how to play and what was going on super fast and intuitively.
Real great work all around!
TLDR game was great:
- Great gambling feel
- Progression was satisfying
- Game is a bit to easy to beat, made me not need to care about the combo system which invalidated reflips as a upgrade.
- A "Optimal score build" also doesn't need reflips since for a perfect score you kind of need to assume all heads anyways and gamble on that.
- The above notes just are part of a whole of the upgrades felt very linear, more coins / more points were the best always.
- Art is wonderful and there is lots of clarity!
- Game is easy to understand and get involved in, I learned if fast.
Sorry again for being so wordy about 1 or 2 points haha
No worries at all!! I really appreciate the feedback, and you've gotten an awesome high score!
I didn't want to make the required score *too* high for the jam entry, I originally penciled in 12 rounds but found it just got too repetitive without items that interact with the coins, I think if I were to polish this up a bit further I'd definitely add that endless mode where you just try and get your score as high as possible ala the extra rounds in Balatro.
I hadn't considered how good only ever picking coins and not reflips would be either, since a big part of what I thought made the concept work was the combos! I think it's something that before I change I'd like to add some items (some that could potentially synergize well with combos) to see how that changes the value of the basic purchases.
Thank you for the compliments on the art!! I would have loved to give the dealer some animations and lil speech bubbles but just ran short on the clock, getting to draw a cute fox girl was a huge part of why I wanted to do this jam aha.
Again this was such a nice review/comment, thank you so much! I can tell you really engaged with it and pushed the system as far as it'd go, and you've given me some great notes to work with <3
Drawing cute fox girl is absolutely peak game jamming motivation!
Great work
Nice Job! <3
I love the colour palette and art. It is nice to see that someone else decided to make a balatro style game for this jam. I was able to pretty easily beat it when I realized that 1 coin was the preferable option to rerolls since flipping an extra coin is equivalent points wise to rerolling. But overall a pleasant looking game that gives me a similar dopamine boost that stuff like balatro does when I see big number at the end of the game.
Thank you! One of the design goals was to have a bit of that "it's so over/we're so back" energy that you get from chance based outcomes, I do like buying rerolls to fix the bigger sequences to get the combo payoff but maxing out on coins is fun just to see all of em lined up. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Really loved the art style and the simple mechanics. Great game! :)
Wow, I love this! I was thinking coin flipping balatro before I even read that in the description. I love the subtle depth of the decision making behind balancing the points between heads and tails and the shop selections. The art is adorable too and the choice of colors is great. I'd love to play a fleshed out version of this, but I still had fun with it as is. Amazing work!
Thank you!! I'm really happy with the balance of purchasable items, all of them feel necessary/desirable to some extent. Making the dealer cute was also a big priority for this game due to the theme so i'm glad you enjoyed the art! I'd love to make a fleshed out version, killing me I couldn't add unique items in time.. Definitely one to go back to when i've got the chance. Thanks for checking it out ^^
This is so much fun! Simple to understand, with a good range of upgrades to tune. The heads/tails wager mechanic works perfectly, I kept messing up my runs by going all in on tails (tails never fails!) but a lot of fun trying to dial it in just right to get a highscore
The art style is adorable, with a lovely palette and character design. A little music and sfx would round this off perfectly :)
ahhhh see my strategy is usually to give the coins an even split of points so I can adapt what chain i'm making on the fly, MIFFED I couldn't add some items that give benefit to flipping tails that would have supported your strategy. Hard agree on the music and SFX, I lost a decent chunk of time getting the scoring algorithm functioning and didn't quite have time to add it. I'm glad you enjoyed the art, thank you for giving it a go!!
This is so fun! I love the art, the color palette especially is really excellent. I got a high score of 7500. Great work!
Nice score!! Really happy with the art, The palette I actually colourpicked from the current jam header so you'll have to thank the host, Zahran. Thank you for playing!
Really cute art style. I think the gameplay is great and the concept is very creative. I wish the game had more animations and sounds though. Great submission.
Thank you! getting to draw a cute fox girl for a game was a big reason I wanted to do this jam, glad I was able to deliver on the game-play front as well! Def feel you on the animations and sounds, something to add if I go back to this one. Thank you for playing!
OMG I love this game, the art is amazing the gameplay is super fun!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! <3
I like the aesthetics and the art style ❤️
A cool idea, I love the art.
