Really cool game. Like the other have said this is a throw back to the first Mario Kart game on the SNES. Good stuff! Two things that could be improved imho:

  • The engine sound was a bit too much for me. You should think about using something else for that
  • It felt like the enemies were just randomly faster then me. Like when I would drive in a straight line at max speed there were enemies that would overtake me. Since they slowed down shortly after that I still managed to win but that felt a bit weird.

But really cool entry. Had a lot of fun with this one! Good job :)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback! Yea, I was worried about the engine sound being a bit raucous, especially when a bunch of karts are next to each other at the beginning of the race. All karts start with the same speed. Gems picked up during the race make a kart faster. The AI is a little dumb and a bit greedy when it comes to collecting gems. Capitalize on that greed and you will overtake them, but don't forget to keep picking up gems--they are more substantial than coins in Mario Kart.

Oh that makes sense :) Then maybe a speed / max speed indicator would be a great addition. That way you can instantly see that the gems make you faster

That is a cute little game and works really well. the different camera angles and the zoom in form the sky. The only complain I have is that the track itself is a little boring. maybe you could have made some landmarks or little obstacles.

but overall very polished and nice.

Great little game! I loved it. Brought me back to a particular N64 game that I loved. Good job.

I thought that I launched a SNES game, it gave me some good memories!

Your game is a good tribute to the Mario Kart game, you have everything, and you nailed it perfectly. However, the only annoying thing for me, is the music which gets quickly repetitive.

Anyway, you can be proud of your work, gg!

Surely a really original take on the art assets, but the movements felt a bit too plain and didn't give enough depth to be challenging (even though I know that in such a short period of time it would have been difficult to make them more engaging, given how difficult it is). I also didn't feel the need to have such a big map, or to have it at all in general. Other than this, I like the sounds and the music, they fitted the game nicely. Good job!

Very nice! Mode7 is cool.

My fastest time was 13 seconds.

Developer(+1)

Gotcha. ;) That was a good development feature.

Very fun game but your AI drivers are way better at it than I am ;-) I would have liked to know what position I finished, not being the last one does not count as losing in my book! :-D

Developer

Thanks. I implemented order tracking post submission. I will add it after the jam finishes.

Fun game but man those bots are so greedy haha. They never left any coins for me! :'( I wasn't very skilled at turning so I couldn't manage to overtake anyone and lost in last place haha.

Developer

Thanks. The secret is win is to exploit their greed and to be sure to get the gems you can find.

Cool little mario kart clone. Has a nice retro vibe that works together well with the visuals, sfx, and music. Cinematic intro is really nice also. I like the strategy element of collecting gems to permanently boost your speed, but it's also kind of unfair because if you start towards the back you're guaranteed to lose since the first couple of rounds the bots will collect all the gems before you can reach them. Would be nice to have some kind of balancing elements like maybe gems are better if you're farther behind or something.

Nice devlog btw, very informative and interesting!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback and for watching the devlog! I wanted to add powerups where the karts in front tended to get defensive items and the ones in the back get speed up items and the ones in the front get offensive items. You're right; it needs a little shake up--but then I'll have to improve the AI some more. :)

Great game! I kind of suck at it though. One thing it could use is a rubber-banding effect like in Mario Kart games.

Developer

Thanks. You are right. My last enhancement before submission starts you in a pole position that matches your placement from the last race. That should help you get in front to grab those gems!

Love it! Really polished discrete game. Perfect for a game jam

Developer

Thanks!

Really cool! Music sounded really good with the space vibe and the race was fun! Just wish the top half was full screen with the bottom half being like a mini map kinda thing, besides that great job!

Developer

Thanks. You're right about the bottom half. It helped me with debugging more than anything else.

Wow this is awesome, I love what you did with the art, I also made a kart game and I'm jealous of some of the features you managed to add in the time! It's cool that the AI steer towards the coins, however maybe they do that a bit much, and it allowed me to overtake on a few turns. Really great though!

Developer

Thanks. Yea, I thought about what it'd take to make the AI smarter about collecting coins, but I was concerned they'd be much harder to win against without some other game elements (eg powerups). I saw there were a couple other racing games. I will give your game a try!

Cool game, really felt like Mario Kart, right down to the dual screens! My only issue is that the game has the opposite design structure to mario kart. In the Kart games, being in back gives you advantages to make the races closer. In this game, the players in front have the advantage that they get to collect all the gems, leaving the players in the back with nothing. This makes early leads very important and makes it so there's no point of really playing when you're behind. Overall really well done game though, definitely captured what it was going for!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, it lacks the rubber banding that Mario Kart had. The last enhancement I added before submission was to start each kart in the pole position that matched the order they finished the previous race, as a means to help someone win a race.

Give it a few more tries. Having a focus on gem collection led to some interesting strategies, mainly centered around how gem greedy the AI is.

Nice game, music was nice, driving was simple and effective.

Developer(+1)

Thank you.

Submitted(+1)

Damn. Super clean. A side-effect of the car's engine hum (coincidental or not) was that staying at top speed gave a nice droning  base note in the music's key... Hmm... interesting subliminal feedback telling the player to stay as close to the "harmonizing speed"....

What was I saying? Oh, yeah. Anyway, potential music racing game (for you to make out of this nice framework that you've made for yourself!) aside, nice work! The sprites fit nicely and it feels quite cohesive overall.

Developer

Haha, yes! I was worried about bad harmonics when I added the engine sound. It reminds me of when I broke off the muffler of my first car and had to drive around with it for a while--I purposely drove to make my car in the same key of the music I was playing on the radio.

I like your idea on musicification of the game. Cheers!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, that's a story! Now I'm actually seriously wondering what direction to take a musical racing game of that fashion...

Submitted(+1)

Nice Idea to make this MarioKart game out of the sprite sheet :D

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! I got SNES Mario Kart vibes. Won on the first try by the way :P

Developer

Haha! Congrats on first try!

Submitted(+1)

Reminds me of mario kart or f zero. Looks good and the controls are well made. Good game! :)

Submitted(+1)

Very appealing graphically, you really captured the mode 7 look. Balance-wise, a little awkward that the racers in front get the lion's share of the gems, and as such can easily extend their lead. My first playthrough, I definitely suffered from this point, as I was placed in the back and watched as all the surprisingly competent AI stole all my gems away. Ah well, didn't hamper my enjoyment much. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. After a few playthroughs, you development some strategies. Particularly, the AI's gem greed sends them off road sometimes. The need to collect gems reminds me of last hitting in MOBAs.
