The leaderboard may keep me coming back to this one for a while.
This is amazing. Really cool design, fun game, and highly polished.
Amazing submission, you could really continue expanding this game!
It's hard to be critical of this game. If it's at all slow, it's because the design inherently forces you to be methodical. The use of Cards allows the depth of this game to come from basic card counting. Pro/Con: It's engaging to build up to the moment when all the dominoes fall as you build up some idea in your head, I think maybe leaning harder into making it feel REALLY satisfying with a grander fireworks display as each step progresses since most of the game is building up to that grand moment.
Honestly struggling to be critical, I was throughly engaged and this game is so simple in it's design and elegant in execution -- nice work!
Thanks! Yeah that's a great idea. Making the player feel good when they're doing good is always great. Even if it is just some oomphy visual and auditory feedback. I was a bit afraid about the reception since they game indeed is slow in gameplay and mainly about just planning for the whole game and then watching it unfold. It seems to take a certain type of player to really enjoy but at least the feedback is mainly positive.
For the record, I don't think your game is far from being $0.99 on an app store or supported with in-game advertisements. Seems incredibly replayable. Maybe switching from a square to a vertical rectangle for level formats, and maybe some concept of progression or at least being able to clear tiles when you clear the deck/move on to "the next level" and all of a sudden this is perfect for mobile.
Where should I start? I'm totally stunned by this game. The idea is afaik unique and awesome, it is the most polished game I've seen so far in the jam (gameplay, introduction, effects, you even have a leaderboard). The game boy aesthetic is beautiful. I'm in love!
To find at least something to criticize: It would be nice if the tutorial mode could be turned off, as soon as you have learned how the game works.
Have you thought about making the little guy able to pass the turned blocks in a straight line, if the card at the other end is a match? That would enable even more advanced play.
I'm out of words, you have delivered big time, chapeau!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the game.
Yeah he tutorial thing could definitely be toggled off once the player has learned them. And obviously improved upon in other ways too. Hard to make even a decent tutorial without any proper playtesting.
Interesting idea that those solid blocks could be passed when matching cards on both sides. Surely it would fix the issue of unreachable pockets of space. But dunno if it would make predicting the movements even harder than it is currently with some not so easily to noticed accidental matches. On the other hand though it would also lessen the probability of accidental dead ends early on.
i wish if i can give you fully feedback but my little experience don't let me do that so it's very polished game that's what i'm gonna say.
but the music need some touch
Oh yeah, I'm fully aware that I'm not too good at music. Still trying though and I think slowly even improving. Thanks for playing!
Very polished game with interesting interactions! Turning playing cards into a puzzle game is a brilliant idea, I think you should consider making this into a tabletop game, or make a rulebook so people at home can play using their own playing cards! Planning out the jumps feel satisfying and is easy to understand because everyone is familiar with suits and numbers. I think the instructions in the beginning can be improved a little more, as I wasn’t sure how the character actually jumps consecutively - especially if the player sets up more than 1 possible direction to jump to. Because of this ambiguity, I had the initial misunderstanding when being told I could set up multiple jumps, I thought it had more to do with jumping over existing platforms. Speaking of which, because the player can’t jump over existing platforms, it’s a trap! Even with the leaderboard, it’s not inherently clear that this game’s objective is just to earn score - one might think that they may fail if they do not collect enough food. So I think you should let the player know that food just gives points, they are not the objective of the game.
Lastly, I’d just like to point out that I personally don’t find a lot of engagement in solitaire-like games because of the lack of variety and complexity in player action, but I know other people who do love games like this (which is why I recommended making a tabletop ruleset for this game). I did enjoy the game for a bit, and I think it’s an awesome concept!
Adding a leaderboard seems like a risky move on a jam!
You really, really have to plan ahead. I love that! Great game.
Super addicting, a lot of fun
you can literally release this as is to any game store and nobody is going to know this was made in a jam very great game my only problem is the tutorial showing every time I play it should be hidden after the first time
All around a great game! Though, I wasn't a fan of the music. I managed #13 with 343. Could you tell me how you know from which country someone is playing (as shown on the leaderboard)?
Haha yeah, I'm very much a newbie when it comes to music. The shown country is based on the ip address.
Awesome, fun to play game, well polished and great music. Really like it.
Great job!
Awesome game. It's aesthetically-pleasing and just all around lovely in terms of design. The leaderboard is a very nice feature too. The premise is interesting and is a vast improvement on Solitaire! Also, I didn't realize the flying thing couldn't jump diagonally so I wasted some cards (and my strategy) on that the first time.
The second time, I tried my best to plan ahead properly but in the end, I ended up having a nice chain of cards on the board, but I just couldn't manage to link the flying thing up with my chain since I wasn't getting the cards I needed, so my game ended with a very full board and a measly 165 points haha...
I might come back later and try to do better.
P.S. The previous commenter mentioned this too but you really do give wonderful feedback. Thanks for your comments on my game too! :) I hope your game gets more plays and ratings because it really deserves it.
Thanks!
Well it wasn't a proper chain if it wasn't completely linked. The biggest thing in scoring well is to realize that you always will have the whole deck if you play until the very last cell. So you can just dedicate certain cards as transitions between suits, reserve a space for em and they will come at some point. Then it's just all about not making accidental transitions to where you don't want.
Had stuff like this happen to me too many times during the development. Carefully constructing a whole board of a chain and then to just realize that there is an accidental missed turn right in the beginning.
Wait, you're supposed to create chains and then have him move? I just had him move one tile at a time, to the gem and then to the next one.
Oh yes! Did you not even accidentally do any links at all? One of the "tutorial" messages points it out too...
No, just one tile at a time. I guess that's how others were able to get such high scores; I was only able to use half the field since I put non-matching cards far away. The required card also changes every once in a while, and I didn't understand what was causing it.
Ohh! Umm you mean it changes without the character moving at all? It should always be the card the character is (or was) standing on.
Oh, so it changes each time you move to a new card on the field.
Yup, just like that the complete path moved in the end is chained together by either suit or card value. After each card placement, the character does a check if it can move. And if it did move, it will repeat that until it can't anymore. And you get an increasing amount of points each consecutive step. So on first step on lets say 6 you get 6 x 1 points and if there was another 6 connected to that, you'd get 6 x 2 and so on. And multiplied by extra ten if the bonus item is on top of the card too.
Really enjoyed the premise. I realized that I was playing it wrong the first couple of times that I tried it, because I wasn’t planning ahead at all and was just waiting for the next card of my current path to arrive (For which I loved the little flash detail that you add when that card actually arrives)
The leaderboard wasn’t showing for me though, which is a shame because I would’ve loved to see my name there on the last places. :D
Also, on a side note, I’ve been reviewing games for the last couple of houres, and I’ve seen your username a couple of times already. You always provide good feedback and make some great and deep comments. You definitely have a lot of experience. Great job on that as well!
Haha yeah, it's really more about properly planning for the whole board at once and then just watching it unfold. Super glad someone actually noticed he flash of matching card arriving! Just a little quality of life thing I really felt it needed while playing it myself.
Aww, sucks about the leaderboards not working. Which version did you play, web or standalone? Maybe it just had a problem loading that particular moment. I'm guessing you're Sergio?
Yeah, I indeed have been making games for quite some time now. Only really discovered the jam scene few years ago but been quite actively taking part since then (every single Ludum Dare for example). And I just write the kind of feedback and criticism I'd like to receive myself too. Those one liner feedbacks in the style of "great game" aren't that helpful in the grand scheme of things.
Really well polished! Although I am quite bad at solitaire lol
Nice use of
storing people's location and ipleaderboard based gameplay! (im n-word420 btw). The game was well polished with a very nice use of music! Hope this gets top 10! 4.5-5 star rating, outstanding work! Thanks! Yup, grabbing the country based on the ip. I've done a similar flag showing leaderboards on couple of games now and it really adds some personality behind the players instead of just showing names. Did the music myself too! I mainly jam on Ludum Dare and other similar jams where you need to do everything yourself and having the art kit ready on this one, I couldn't bring myself to use some external piece of music too.
Nice, and what DAW did you use?
GarageBand with some BeepBox.co sprinkled in.
noice. Lol I just end up using ableton for everything i do XD
Haha yeah, I would definitely use some proper DAW too if I had one. GarageBand is like a restricted version of Logic Pro and has quite a lot of limitations and flaws. I still very newbie when it comes to audio stuff so I haven't really gotten around to acquiring one yet.
Very fun game, makes you think, got #1 on leaderboard for now. Will be coming back to this, good game :)
Thanks! Yeah, I doubt that won't be enough to hold the number one spot for too long :D I got almost 6k during the development process before the implementation of leaderboards and that was even without the bonus items.
