Description
I thought it was a steampunk puzzle platformer.
Outer Time - Main title and last level where you manage to stop time.
Spin the Hourglass - Sand prevents you from accessing the time artifact, and you must turn the hourglass upside down to find the solution.
Inside the Falling Clock - Time is running out to grab the second artifact as the giant clock sinks into the void.
I used almost the same instruments for all three tracks to keep the same atmosphere. For each tune, I played very similar chords (Am, F#dim, F, E, Bb), but tried to bring something new to each. No real drums, the rhythm is based on samples of the sound of broken glass, clock and watch clicks .
I used Reason 12 with essentially the basic plugins.
Message from the artist:
It was out of my comfort zone and I'm pleased with the result. I hope you enjoy listening too.
Theme:
How does it fit the theme?
Rhythmic sounds are clock clicks.
One track is inspired by falling clocks.
Another is based on the hourglass.

Outer Time: Wow, really fucking cool! The chorus has some cool effects, and with the ticking in the background and the drumming in the background... it creates a real sense of urgency, perfect for a final level. If this was the title-song, you bet I would be playing the hell out of this.
Spin the Hourglass: I hear the sand dropping! (what is that again, a maraca?) Your instrument choices are always so top-notch. And your melodies are always so characteristic and different, with that little fast twirl (e.g. 0:02). And what instrument is that at 0:32?? It sounds so goofy yet cool!
Inside the Falling Clock: You have such a nice piano man. And how you managed to make essentially a drum out of clock-sounds is awesome to me. It just all sounds so pretty... I'm jealous.
Im glad I still managed to rate your entry in time (I was busy the past couple o' days)! And thanks a lot for specifying which chords you use. That is to me very useful information :D
Really cool songs! The quality is top-notch as usual, you have your own characteristic flairs to the songs with good melodies and interesting instruments, and I just love to listen to them. Well done!
Outer Time: great production quality. I'm loving this mood, and it hammers in the time theme very well. Very cool chord choices around 1:00-1:10 with the flat 5s.
Spin the Hourglass: more cool chord choices with more flat 5s for a serious mood. Beautiful synths.
Inside the Falling Clock: I just noticed and I like the similar chord progressions in all the tracks. Love the buildup sections with the percussion. This is a cool and mildly haunting close to the OST.
Great work!
Loved it! Everything from the compositions to the sound design and production were fantastic. The choral riser sounds in Outer Time made that track really stand out to me. I enjoyed your harmonies with the chord progression. Using similar chords was a great way to keep all of the tracks sounding consistent with each other, yet each track had it's own unique character. The clock and gear sounds were also a huge highlight for me. The ending with the broken clock sounds was a pleasant surprise! Overall, great production.
Bravo! Look forward to hearing more from you!
The introduction of "Outer Time" grabbed my attention immediately and literally made me go "oooooh". I was engrossed for the rest of the suspenseful first track, the clock's ticks tying it nicely into the jam's theme. "Spin the Hourglass" was lovely to listen to, mysterious and delicate - what a great choice of instruments. Finally, "Inside the Falling Clock" wowed me with its mesmerising sound design combined with a gorgeous piano melody. I loved how the melody began to mimic the ticking of the clock in its repetition, while never becoming boring. Incredible work!
I like the mixture of 19 century era piano with modern sound. High quality of sound, well crafted composition... I like it! :) Broken glass samples sound really interesting in this context, really good job!
Well put together tracks that sound good and would be perfect as background music in a puzzle game.
Very different from I heard from during past jams (I have the Ennemy encounter jam in mind especially, which I couldn't participe in sadly). The quality is astounding honestly, great work on textures, sound effects and mixing!
My favorite thing about each track :
1: that pitch bend effect on the voices right at the beginning! Sent me directly in the mood of your fictive puzzle game. And the replacement of drums with clock sounds is very well made I think. It fits the theme quite well.
2: There's a double winner combo for me. First I'm a sucker for this chord progression that comes with the synth. Then, that synth sound! OMG I love it, it sojnds like a Juno from roland or something and it's so warm and round! All in all there is a like of classical cadence which sound amazing with these sounds.
3: I really like the impression of the clocks needles going crazy, very atmospheric track.
Great job with this ost! Keep it up :D
Enjoyed all the piano parts in this one, I just like the piano's tone haha. Enjoyed a baroque touch when it comes to melodies in the second track and the percussions, including the clocks, were mixed in really well.
beautiful! the consistency of the ticking keeps the whole thing grounded, but the piano, strings, and synths make the whole thing sound very mystical. very nicely done :)))
This is just incredible! The sound design, composition and musical ideas are all outstanding. I think “Inside the Falling Clock” is my favorite track here. It has all the impressive quality and mood of the first two, but it introduces an amazing feeling of subtle grimness and mystery. Well done!
Lovely, high quality music and sound. Your composition is excellent and kept me interested all the way through. Would definitely fit the genre of puzzle/platformer. Overall, nice job!
This was a very important point for me: it has to stay interesting during the 5 minutes of listening. Thanks for the feedback and compliment.
Outer Time: The vocal and digital sounds that swell in and slide up a half step are extremely cool. I think it is such an awesome detail that you land on the groove of this track exactly at 1:00. That groove is definitely my favorite part of your entire OST.
Spin the Hourglass: The subdued synth melody makes me feel contemplative and focused which would be so good for a puzzle game like what you describe. I think it is so cool to hear how you can take the same instrumentation and apply it in such a different atmosphere and context. Very well done.
Inside the Falling Clock: This is a great concluding piece to your trilogy. The shattering effect works so well along with the ticking of the clock. The ending is abrupt, but works with the atmosphere you created!
Overall: The mixing you’ve done and your instrumentation choices are so on point. This would work so well in the game you describe and would elevate it to a next level experience for the player. Thank you so much for your work on this and thank you for sharing!
I love your detailed feedback. You're even able to see or hear unconscious details.
I hadn't noticed that the groove started at 1'00". It's pure coincidence :D
Anyway, I'm glad you like it.
Your composition is fantastic and you've set the bar very high!
I like how this sounds super cinematic, and reflects the situation that the track is for, yet it still stands very well on it's own - it's not just forgettable background music. I think it takes a really good composer to do that. I also really like the production, how consistent it is quality-wise, and the cool tricks you do with it. I also think that use of piano in all of the tracks really ties it all together (and i also really like the choir in the first track). Overall, pretty cool! I'm glad that you stepped out of your comfort zone :)
« I think it takes a really good composer to do that ». Thank you for this very kind compliment :)
That's great! Every piece is on it's place and everything is well done, good job!
Thank you :)
The instruments sound very realistic. Would have loved a longer version of Spin the Hourglass <3 (edit : instead I'm just listening to it on repeat and singing along)
I put two tritones in the theme (the interval the most opposite) and it’s pretty unusual, so I’m happy you liked the melody of « Spin the Hourglass »
I really enjoyed these tracks. They do a good job of engaging the listener without being overbearing. They have a quiet intensity that pulls you in and keeps you gripped. I think this would work really well in a game. I am there! The restraint and dynamics are so effective. I especially liked the quick ascending vocal crescendos and synth hits in Outer Time. Taking notes. Thanks for making and sharing.
Thank you for your comment. I really enjoyed your submission as well.
(And I saw you won a MVM ! Congratulations, I played it but I didn’t find everything)
Thanks!! I was really proud of that mvm. We've been meaning to do an update with a map and some minor changes but have not got around to it yet. So it goes 😅
Yes, you can be proud of yourself. I admire the game you've made in 30 days. It's a great job. The character responds well. The exploration is interesting. In short, this is the kind of game I'd like to make for an MVM.
Hmu if you ever want to talk mvm strategy!
Can't say anything bad about it. Great music from you as always!
I recognize your style of feedback.
Thanks :)
A good mix between sound design and music composition. Love de musical production of the tracks. Sounds profesional and It would work perfectly for a game experiencie
Thank you. I still learning to mix and master correctly. I'm happy to read that it sounds professional :)
The title music blew me away - totally! It could have been the theme for any modern TV series with a either some dark or mysterious touch. Awesome!!! And while the ticking clock is not really subtle, it still felt so well integrated and a part of the composition that I only noticed it a few times.
The other two tracks, especiall the last one, are also stunning in their own right, but for me the title track overshadows them.
Top notch in every way I can think of!
There are some very nice sounding songs in this competition, but this soundtrack felt like it would really enhance a game experience, which is much more in keeping with what the jam is all about. To that end, I appreciate the restraint shown in all three tracks while still carrying the intent.
Thank you ! That's a very nice compliment. This kind of comment is a pleasure to read :)
