Description
Birthright is a slow, calm and leisurely paced roguelike dungeon crawl imaginary game in which you will lead Vermis, sole birthright heir of a noble dynasty in decline, through the Glass Mirror Maze, which represents the inner world of the protagonist.

You will be transported to the labyrinth again and again to the labyrinth after each defeat by the oracle of the Vela Vikar, formed by the six wisest members of the council of the Vermis dynasty and you will advance through its corridors full of light and pristine colors in which you will have to face the creatures that inhabit Vermis' imagination and finally, when you have gathered enough power, you will face the projection of her father Iratux in the Glass Mirror Maze to settle the large financial debts and restore the honor of the dynasty that Iratux's miserable and terrible acts have defiled.

The type of music is inspired by dungeon crawlers with a calm and slow pace (Tangledeep, The Land Beneath Us, Etrian Odyssey are some examples).
I have borrowed elements from various genres such as ambient, orchestral music, rock, electronic music or dungeon synth.

The music has been recorded in Cubase 13, using virtual instruments, clean and overdriven electric guitar parts through real tube amps and emulations, electric bass through a preamp (on the last two tracks) and a couple of synth real keyboards.

Acoustic instruments recorded and performed directly and captured with mics and preamps have also been used (specifically acoustic guitars, classical guitars and baroque alto recorder).

Real vocal tracks have also been recorded in the third track to give a somewhat more intense and deeper atmosphere to the confrontation with the final boss. The text of the song is a diversion that plays with Latin expressions and words or those that have that sound similar to Latin phonetic.

The recording process of these voices has been done by singing directly with microphones connected to a preamp and subsequent treatment to give a somewhat more royal and ecclesiastical air by transforming the formants of the voice, which occupies two tracks with different settings and IR reverb trying to recreate real sound spaces.

Throughout the entire soundtrack you can hear typical sounds of the first PCM romplers and keyboards from the 90s and a little beyond in time (Roland JV-1080, JV-2080 and XV-5080 with their expansion modules, different models of Kawai, ...)

On other occasions, classic digital synthesis (especially FM) and virtual drum machines have been used.

All the virtual instruments are recorded In-the-box and MIDI sequenced, except for some fragments in which keyboards have been used that are not sequenced but have been played directly to give more liveliness and humanize the interpretation a little or because the sound banks of those machines were the ones needed and it is very convenient to have them available without having to load any virtual instrument inside the DAW.

The intention has been to create a soundtrack that is relaxing but also epic and to add to the electronic and synthesizer textures some real acoustic or electric elements (such as guitars, flutes, vocals or electric bass) that would provide a more organic feeling. to the whole.

As for what each track represents:

The first track is the main theme of the game. It is intended to be used in the main menu and contains many of the thematic elements that appear in the following tracks.

The second track "Inside the Other Side (The Glass Mirror Maze)" is focused on being the musical basis for the central part during which the game takes place. It is designed to be heard while the player walks through the labyrinth earning experience, facing the fears of the protagonist's internal world that inhabit the labyrinth in the form of creatures and taking the time to strategically calculate each turn of the game without haste.

Finally, the third track "Boss Fight (Iradux)" is intended to set the scene for the battle against the final boss. That's why it has a more serious and epic tone and reaching the end before restarting the loop there is some more agitated piano section with a tonal center that is not clear and that breaks the stasis of the beginning. There are intermediate parts with a gentler character and the vocal melody of the chorus at the beginning is a transformation of the main theme. That entire first section also has a layer of Dungeon Synth style influence interspersed with other styles of music.

Theme

Inside my world

How does it fit the theme?
The theme of "Inside my world" is referenced through the Labyrinth that the protagonist has to explore. The labyrinth (known as "The Glass Mirror Maze" is a reflection of her inner world and her deepest fears.

"Only those who observe the world with eyes off glass will find their way into the maze."

It refers to a quote from the art book "Vermis II - mist & mirrors" published by Plastiboo, inspired by the old dungeon crawler games and from which the MUD (Multi-User dungeon) video games genre emerged.

This is really interesting actually, your instruments and harmonies are both quite unusual, and it's full of unexpected twists and turns, with a definite prog vibe in there too! Really enjoyed this, nice one!

I enjoyed the syncopated feel of some of the tracks. I was also super impressed that you recorded some instruments live, because the recording sounded super clean, I assumed that some of those were live midi input into nice vsts!

Overall great work! I think your music would be very fitting in the game you described!

Interesting use of instruments! But I like it. Love the story and idea for the game. Great music!

Okay it's really good overall. But that progression on the last track with the harp was everything! The dissonant chord play after that even better. It ended on a super high note for me, incredible job!!

Really cool to see your session in the YouTube video, I use Cubase too :)

And it's nice to see actual guitar and bass tracks that you've played. I still need to learn how to make those sound good, I am still hesitant to try this!

Your ost has quite a unique mix of sounds. It would make the game have a special identity :)

The composition is cool! I like the dynamics of each track and changes of direction.

For example that piano part to finish the last track was a delightful surprise!

Well done :)

Thank you! I'm glad you think so.

About the guitar and bass tracks:

- On the electric bass parts I have recorder with a MESA Subway preamp without speaker IR impulse  (I find it easy and good sounding when I try something with it).

- Electric guitars on the boss theme are all recorded from a valve 100w amp (ENGL SE) into the interface preamp. I've noticed that at least for me sounds nice. It's a no brainer. But I don't discard to use emulations. On the theme track there's a Morgan amp in VST format that delivers a nice clean in my opinion. Nowadays there's plenty of software that does guitar recording fine!

Nice sounds on the whole project, I think reading the process of recording makes this all the more impressive. The mood change in Boss Fight got me a bit confused, especially considering it's a boss track, but it doesn't hinder my appreciation in any way. Nice work!

Great Mix and tone mixing, love how you merge every instruments.

Strange transitions for the first track.

Second track was really chill with those differents moods.

Got me some Vladimir Cosma vibe x)

Last track got Nier vibe in the intro ;)  The mood changing are a bit too surprising for me.

Really good! It gives me Zelda and Final Fantasy vibes. I like how detailed the lore is.
