  • Everything is pain… especially when you drop from the top and fail your way to the bottom… let’s not kid ourselves I didn’t make it that far, but I had fun trying. The only mechanic I question is having two separate layers if cooldown affecting you, both a shot cooldown and a reload as an additional cooldown. This turns a game of getting back to where you were or even mastering the other mechanics of the game into a waiting game, which is frustrating for a different reason than I think you were intending, as it has nothing to do with player skill. Having the gun fire as a semiautomatic pistol would ruin the challenge of a lot of the game, as a semiauto can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger (assuming you don’t jam the exit chamber). Another option I have seen used was whenever the player touched the ground (or other interactable surfaces in this case) the player reloaded. This may be something to consider, maybe with extra stipulations, like having to be on for a certain amount of time, or limiting the number of shots even more, etc. Moving on to the Game Design Document, the format was perfect and well organized, with one exception. There was no future planning section for what development looked like after the jam was over. I hope that there will be ongoing progress on this, and I look forward to how it turns out.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
A Rage Platformer (i.e. Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy) where you are a gun. You navigate by flinging your self around and shooting to give yourself a boost. Keep track of your ammo though or you may be stuck reloading!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are literally a weapon trying to climb a building. I feel like that is right on the nose ;)

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Note, in the actual version of the game, we locked the mouse movement in a radius around the player. We found that due to web security we are unable to confine or capture the mouse on a web version of the game. Keep this in mind as the mechanics were designed around that mouse lock.

Yep, this is definitely a rage game, lol. Sorry to hear your mechanics got a little messed up on the web version of the game, but I don't think it affected things too badly, at least as far as I could notice. I dunno if you used actual physics, but I know they can be tricky to work with and I think you got things pretty consistent. I liked the art more than I expected. Normally I would give a critique about the mismatched pixel sizes but I actually think it works really well for a rage game like this one, since it lends a bit of humor to the assets. I think adding multiple music tracks that the player can skip through is a pretty cool idea as well. Overall a nice little game, though I did not even come close to beating it, haha.

Developer

thanks for giving it a shot! And thanks for the feedback! We are planning on doing a Steam release soonish so feel free to add it to your wishlist 😜https://store.steampowered.com/app/3498260/Shoot_For_The_Stars/

Hey we had similar vibes with our submissions! I loved this, incredibly hard, I certainly see difference locking that mouse radius could do. I wish the fire rate was a bit faster, but honestly maybe thats on purpose, really awesome execution on the concept though! Love me some shoot to move memes.

Developer(+2)

Thanks for give our game a try! Yeah the shot cooldown was very intentional. it makes a huge difference difficulty wise later on in the game.

Its a fine line to walk, awesome job!

This game was so difficult! I played it a little while ago earlier in the jam but just thought I should comment. I loved the physics. It felt really nice to play, despite how difficult it was (I was stuck in the first area ahah)

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for giving it a try! That is what we were going for, fun and difficult physics :)
There for sure is a learning curve with the game.

Developer(+3)

Hey everyone if you are interested in a full run through of this game we have the complete session recorded over on YT. I will post the link if you would like to see the complete game start to finish.
SAYOR (Spoil at your own risk)
Part of the fun is seeing the different ways that everyone comes up with getting past an obstacle!

very fun game, i like the ability to cycle through the music. definitely a hard game but i think a lot of it was due to the inconsistencies with shots and movemnt a lot of the time I felt like I was flying around randomly with random jolts. great game!

Developer(+2)

yeah totally. That is due the web security stuff can constrain the mouse on web. We do it in the exe though. Feels much better

It's like getting it over it on the moon, but with bullets. The floaty physics were super goofy I loved it. Braver than me making a rage game. Our game was originally based on one but I toned it down lol. I'll probably check it out again when I have some more time to see how far I can get.

Developer

thanks for giving it a shot!

Submitted(+3)

I'm sure some rage game fans are gonna love this. I'd suggest making the first obstacles just a little bit easier! Good job!!!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback and for giving our game a shot!

Submitted(+3)

This was fun! I'm going to try and beat it over the weekend when I have more time :D

Developer

I believe in you! Just finishing it is an accomplishment for sure. My record is just over 13 min.

Submitted(+3)

I can't get past the bench...... I think it's a skill issue xD

Developer(+1)

There is definitely a learning curve and the browser version does not help. Thank you for trying the game!

Submitted(+3)

Pretty fun! But too hard for me.

Developer(+1)

Im sowwy

Submitted(+2)

Its fine, I'm just not that good at games XD, seems like a lot of games used this idea, but this is the best implementation of the gun mechanic I've seen

Developer

thank you! That means a lot!

Submitted(+2)

super fun and frustrating  xD just kept spamming R most of the time lol

Developer

Haha I love doing that. Just dumping mags everywhere lol. Thanks for giving our game a shot!

Submitted(+3)

Lots of fun! Could of used checkpoint style levels (level is built kind of in stages to prevent to far of falls at once) but honestly some good fun

Developer

Yeah we were going for super hard similar to the other rage style games but something to consider! Thanks!

Submitted(+2)

Amazing game, was very fun, Idk I somehow managed to do this as a one-off thing but I did get stuck in that little space there, but otherwise amazing job!

Developer

Thank you for giving our game a shot! And thanks for letting me know about that weird collision! Those dang fire escapes have been the worst to dial in the collisions on haha I'll see if we can update that bottom stair a bit to not feel so annoying.

Submitted(+3)

Nice! I wasn't able to progress very far but I keep coming back to this game every few minutes for another session even if I rage-quit most of the time 😅 I liked that you can save yourself from falling all the way down with the shooting, and it really feels like someone with a lot of skill (not me) could do some really crazy speed running techniques. The only issues I have are with the reloading: 1. It felt annoying when I forgot to reload before an attempt 2. I feel like the reload animation/progress bar finishes before I can shoot. But still, very fun and will probably play it again later!

Developer(+1)

thank you for the feedback!

Submitted(+3)

I think the GMTK-Jam has an ongoing joke about everyone doing "shoot to move" whatever the theme is, but you found a creative new way, that I haven't seen before. I could totally see this being streamer friendly hit on steam!

The reloading mechanic doesn't add much to the gameplay, and maybe you can look into creating more loops in the level design, so if the player fails a jump, he only drops to an early level.

All in all very promising!

Developer(+2)

Appreciate the feedback! Thank you!

Submitted(+3)

Very nice game; I officially hate it. In all seriousness, good game and very engaging and solid. Y'all did a great job!

Developer

haha glad you hated it! It means we did it right 😉 thanks for giving it a shot!

Submitted(+3)

GDD is solid!

Prototype is playable!

I think physics might be framerate dependent because I cannot get on that hydrant to save my life.

Developer(+1)

Did you try launching yourself using the barrel of the gun? Like not shooting but more a rolling action? The collision shapes are pretty tight so you should be able to "stall" on all the little indents and extensions. I'll look into this though to see if it is actually dependent on frame rate! Thanks for giving it a shot!

Submitted(+2)

I did not! Thanks for the tip.

Submitted(+3)

Yup, that was totally it.

Developer

Awesome! Glad it worked for you!
