Hey this is a great idea! I really like the idea of this game, it gives a bit of personality to a space invaders type game. I see lots of room to make the game even better if you choose to do so! Its a lot of fun as is though! One thing I think would be nice is if the incoming asteroids were line up on the same x axis as your platform. that way one would only destroy one piece of of your platform. I felt a lot of times it was very difficult or maybe impossible to keep my platform safe as at times there be three different asteroids coming at the same time for a single platform!

I enjoyed this submission! Great work!

Thanks for playing!

The idea of the game is for the player to keep jumping on the oncoming asteroids to survive -- your initial platform is supposed to break eventually! I'll try to design around that in the next iteration of the game for sure, maybe having the initial platform collapse after a while.

Submitted(+1)

Oh!!! I didn't even THINK to do that!!!

Developer(+1)

It is not super clear for sure ๐Ÿ˜„ hope I can make it better!

It's okay! Communicating information is pretty challenging at times! Because to us as the developer it seems intuitive because we've been playing our own game and know the rules and mechanics! It takes a lot of skill and testing to understand what a new player might see or think! You did really well considering even though I didn't properly understand your mechanics, I had fun! Please let me know if/when you update your project!

Developer(+1)

Absolutely! Thanks again for playing!!

No problem have a great day!

Cool game! Loved shooting stuff with my blaster :)

A few thoughts on how to improve it: I have escaped without doing a single jump - it was easier to just stand on initial platform and shoot incoming asteroids with rapid fire (they got 4 stones out ot 5, but defend one is even easier). It would be cool to be able to move vertically and reach the ship by yourself, not just waiting for it. I think it would add more choice between staying and trying to get more score and moving to escape (this choice is present in https://itch.io/jam/scorejam29/rate/2661422, but it lacks the right amount of danger).

The stats screen and abilities are very nice additions!

Thanks a lot for playing!

What you mentioned was one of the hardest design challenges I had haha

1. My vision is that the player would be hopping around the asteroids, but it had to start somewhere. Then I realized that you can just stand shooting and escape only doing that, which led me to introduce two things: the slow initial rate of fire + the different asteroids with harder to break ores. Ideally they would crash onto your platform and force the player to move. I think that going forward the best way is to have the initial platform collapse itself after a couple of seconds, instead of hoping that the random generation of asteroids would crash into it.

2. The ship was an idea of a non-conventional timer, but that clearly led to confusion :( Since I want the game to be 3 waves long and the player needs to survive that long, I think going forward I'll remove the ship and add a counter as other comment here suggested.

Thanks again!

I liked the ship, though it's not clear initially that it is a timer (I tried to jump on icon and died lol).
Would be sad to remove it completely

Really solid entry!
I think the gameplay feels very snappy, and the decision between staying alive and getting more points is definitely very present throughout the whole game.
The aesthetics are coherent and look pretty nice!
For sounds maybe you could've added a sound effect to shooting your pistol, regardless of whether it impacts an asteroid, but other than that, it's solid!

In terms of feedback:
I think you could implement more vertical follow-through in your jumps. What I mean is that sometimes, if you hit your head when jumping, your character loses momentum and falls, which makes jumps feel a lot more punishing (which might be what you're going for, though!). It's not uncommon for platformers to allow your character to hold their vertical momentum for a short while if they hit their head to avoid this issue, or they'll round out their platforms' colliders a little bit so that you'll slide smoothly if you still have some momentum. This allows your game to feel a bit less punishing if you're a bit off in your jump, ultimately resulting in the game feeling a bit more fair.

Very cool entry, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the thorough feedback, really appreciate it! While I was developing the game I tried to implement all the standard quality of life platform features like coyote time, variable height jump and air resistance -- I think the game feels snappy because of those!

Unfortunately I ran out of time trying to implement the "bounce around corners" but I agree 100% that it would improve the controls of the game for sure.

Thanks for playing and taking the time to write a feedback!

Awesome! Very fun concept, and really does make you lose by getting too greedy! The unlocked powerups also add a fun renewing aspect, love it!

Glad you liked it! Thanks for playing!

Whew! Very cool little game but brutally difficult for my weaksauce reflexes. Hah!

I'm not very good at this, but it was a great little gameplay loop with complimentary nice visuals and a cool sound/music package. Great job! Love having to choose between saving myself or more points

Okay, I'm back to play some more.  I have to beat this game. I have both powerups unlocked but I need to know is this just time based or do I need to get a certain amount of points before the ship comes back ..... or is this endless????

Developer

I'm so happy to read that ๐Ÿ˜

The game has three "waves" of 60s that slightly increase the platforms speed, so if you survive 3 minutes you should be rescued by your ship!

Submitted(+1)

Okay, that is good to know.  I got my score up to 77,500 points.... I wonder how close i was to 3 minutes.  I'm going to try again and time myself.  Does the timer start even if i never leave the starting block?

Developer(+1)

Yep it starts as soon as the game starts!

Submitted(+1)

107,600 points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I beat it... yup that's right! lol :)

Congrats!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

I really liked the game idea, i think could be turned into a full casual game and be published.

A little hard for me, but maybe a skill issue, congratulations and nice work!

The game idea is wild! Execution is solid. Sadly, the pacing and jump skill requirements are way beyond my level. I'll have to wait for the "speed 0,75" option in the settings ะฅัŠ

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! That's an excellent suggestion for a power up ๐Ÿ˜„

How do I escape to the space ship?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

The spaceship will get closer every second -- after you survive for 3 minutes it will rescue you. Arguably the ship being there is misleading, it worked better as a visual effect in my head ๐Ÿ˜…

Ah I see. Yeah I thought I had to platform my way up to the ship but just kept falling to my death.

Maybe just a countdown timer with text like "spaceship arrives in 3:00" would be a more effective way to communicate that.

Developer(+1)

Yep, that's a great suggestion! Will work on it after the voting process ends. Thanks for playing!

Awesome game and freaking maddening!! lol Saving the stats for replayability was brilliant.  I seriously can't believe you were able to submit the game with 20 hours left!!! That is absolutely amazing!  Great job.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah I submitted earlier but had a lot of edits until the last possible minute ๐Ÿ˜

Submitted(+1)

good game tho touchpad makes it hard

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah I developed this one with a mouse in mind, but I guess touchpad adds an additional challenge? lol

Submitted(+1)

Amazing concept, I played it like a platformer mostly, cool when you can choose a strategy or use game mechanics differently. The game reminded me of that Tai Lung's  escape scene in Java Kung fu panda 1 game LOL

Developer

Thanks for playing! You nailed it: my main vision for the game was a fast paced jump around platformer, but I may need to tweak the game design a bit to incentivize that ๐Ÿ˜…

(1 edit) (+1)

Good simple execution. The hit shake and crunchy sound effect have great game-feel.
