A fun little entry that ties in very well with the theme.

Deciding whether a civilian or a goblin would reach the gate first was definitely the best part, as it tested your prediction skills. The premise is exceedingly simple, but it succeeds at what it is trying to do.

I do wish there were some kind of animation the creatures played when they were zapped, though. And an indicator of how many had gotten through the gate. Just a way to make the creatures feel more like living threats as opposed to just forward moving images. Of course, I recognize that with time constraints not always can such a thing be achieved.

Thanks for creating!

I accidentally let a big rock dude in and The Rock was still fine with it. still a cool idea though and the artstyle is nice

Developer

Yeah you only lose after letting 3 enemies through / kill 3 civilians or some combination of those two. Just didnt express it with UI because I forgot lmao

Amazing game idea. Most people already said but adding some lines to clearly define what is the death area of the laser would be nice. Also got to give it to you, loved the sound effects.

PS: One thing you add just to add a bit more fun and complexity would be that the monsters would be death on the laser path, meaning the death body sprite would be left behind. So you would have to send someone to clean the bodies, but be careful you do not want to kill the janitor who is cleaning the bodies from the gates way :)

Developer(+1)

That is a good mechanic idea. We just ran out of time to produce death art for all the enemies, but it would have definitely been next had we done it. Thanks for the feedback

Cool game!

The perspective of the gate and whether or not people were through it was quite hard to see, maybe you could add a line on the ground to signify where the gate actually hits. Another way to do this might be to change the ground type (to stone, for instance) where the gate hits. That way, when a person is on/over that line, you know you can re-activate the lasers.

Another small QoL improvement the ability to skip the tutorials/fast forward through them. Maybe also add some subtitles.

Other than that, I had a blast! Well done!

Narrator implementing is cool! Nice music theme. Add more visuals (I really missed some particles on unit death), point system, loop process with growing speed and game ready to Mobile stores!)

Developer

Man I am so bad at vfx, I tried super hard to make anything look nice, but I just couldnt get it. Need to spend time learning that stuff for sure. Thanks for the feedback!

Look at Spritemancer or PixelComposer. Its magic softwares especially for 2d development) they save me a lot of time on 2d effects, explosions, magic animation etc.

Developer

Will do thanks!

The announcer is just a beast!) A little refinement and there will be a full-fledged game: points, rounds, beam adjustment, or fixes for the appearance of a person below (far away from the gate) and immediately behind him a monster from above (close to the gate), or align the gate

Creative! Feedback that I didn't see already on the page: it would be nice if it was more clear when something would hit the laser (perspective made it hard to estimate precisely).

Developer

Yeah I tried to make it as precise as possible, but with the 2d nature and perspective I just couldnt get it right. Ill see if I can refine it if I visit this, or a similar idea, in the future! Thanks for the feedback!

Really nice game! Fits the theme perfectly and I love the narration and how the story makes sense/fits together. Good job! :)

Gameplay is nice, it fits the theme nicely. I loved the artstyle. I wasnt able to close the gate for the first resident and had them die. Is that a bug or was i the problem? The concept is fun but with single mechanic it got a bit boring fast. Overall a anice entry, very unique!

Developer

Yeah lmao, I thought it was very boring in testing, but I really struggled to think of an easy way to make it fun. Glad you liked the art though! And in testing I didn't have an issue with tutorial1, but maybe the button clickbox was offset a bit or something. WebGL scaling issue or something? Who can say

Nice entry, but just a couple bits of criticism:

1) The gameplay got old fast. I wish there were a couple more mechanics involved, like what if instead of just one input there were some monsters that flew above the fence and you had to shoot them with a bow and arrow, and every day you got paid and (sort of like Papers Please) had to manage your money. Stuff like that would've gone a long way here.

2) There were a couple times when killing a civilian or letting a monster through was unavoidable. To fix this, maybe you could have a check when you spawn monsters that checks if they will arrive at the fence at the same time as a civilian, and then spawn them with a delay instead.

Other than that, great entry! I liked the look of the game, I thought the buff elf and the voice acting were pretty funny, and the game felt pretty polished. And, while the gameplay was a little basic, I still found myself enjoying what it did have to offer. Overall it was a fun experience.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I had loftier plans to spice it up, but the art and customizations took up a majority of the time I had. Most of my ideas involved just activating more traps tho. Like for underground enemies and stuff. I do like the idea of a trap that shoots flying stuff down as opposed to just an aerial laser though :hmm: . As for the unavoidable damage, yeah mb. I retuned the speed of the humans / golems at the very end and just assumed it wouldnt break any levels, but it did lol. It was just painfully slow and boring before I did that lmao

Just a personal preference if you add subtitle, it will easier for some is not native English speaker.

Anding Game effect will make the game look more!!

I love the elf who taught the game, it is very funny and cult!

Very funny characters, cool original artworks, and easy-to-follow mechanics :)

I appreciate the tutorial in the beginning of the game and simple controls of the game that match up to the theme of the jam. Also the honesty about where you were able to leave the game is understandable as things come up. Artwork looks unique and fits the theme of the game.

Developer

Thanks man, working 8-5 every day really hampers my ability to jam. Glad you appreciated the art Alyssa worked really hard on it, especially the various customizations we set up for all the enemy types. Had grander ideas to try, but that's how jams go.
