Wow, this was dark (literally and metaphorically), but excellent. I found the learning curve very steep; it took me a few tries before I worked it out, but eventually I did manage to survive to the end. The gun reloading felt like a bit of an unnecessary burden given that the rest of the game was already quite difficult. It definitely kept the tension up though, and it was a huge sigh of relief when I made it home at night after a successful expedition. Very well made and great use of 1-bit graphics. Excellent work!

Developer

Thats for playing! Sorry you found it a bit hard, I tried to keep it as true to survival horror as possible and keep things nice and grounded. Glad you made it through to the end! Hope the story was worth it.

Half survival game, half text based story works well, the storytelling is reminiscent of old games like ShadowGate; I particularly enjoyed that all your actions take time and that the character is pretty slow, be it for gathering wood or reloading his gun; the game is on the unforgiving side, I just wished I had a lousy axe attack. Other than that it's hard to imagine this was done in just a week, the game is impressive !

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it so much! Yeah, I was contemplating letting the Axe be an attack but it would have completely taken away from scarcity and function of the gun/ammo and the player's need to choose between more loot or defense. The actuall first idea for the game was, "What if you had a shotgun to defend yourself, but it's also your only way to open chests".

This was awesome mate. I played and got both endings, assuming there is only 2. The story telling was great

Developer

Thats awsome mate really greatfull you played it twice!

Wow! Awesome game that took some dark depressing turns.

The art style is really great. I love the minimalism of only using two colors, well three if we count the blood which was a really nice touch that made entering a building with blood everywhere even more intense.

I love the use of sound in this game. When monsters attack and the sound gets more ominous the tension rises a lot and in general the whole atmosphere is great.

The gameplay is rock solid, plays really well and even though there is no map or indicator back home, which bothered me at first, was no problem at all when I realizes that the game world is not huge. It even helped keeping the tension high when nightfall begins and you try to ran home in panic.

There is not much to complain here. The gameplay, art style, audio are all great and deserve a top rating. The only thing that felt a bit frustrating that when you're too close to a chest and shoot it it won't open up and you wasted a bullet. With the scarcity of resources this can be frustrating.

I really enjoyed your game but now I have to think about if I would shoot a priest to steal his food in such a scenario :D Great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing and thanks for such a long detailed write up! Really warms my heart. Glad all those components worked out well for you. I agree about the chests tho, was on the list to improve at the end but ran out of time, its mainly to stop people opening it from the back and the pointer where the bullets spawn stick out over the top of the hit box if you stand too close in front lol, something ill improve in an update.

This game is impressive. Really cool atmosphere and outsanding art.

The implementation is perfect, the slowness of player actions give a sense of anxiety. I only found a little bug, when you are reading the night report you can perform action, like shooting, and pressing some button it skipped a day, collpasing two night it one.

That said, I can't play horror games XD It's a genre I don't like, so I can't enjoy your game fully. But I still give you max score in almost all categories, very well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and giving it a try, glad you rated it so high even if horror is not your thing! Well you are the first to a find a bug, so special prize to you haha. I thaught I deactivated all actions, lol, I guess not, thanks for finding out!

This is a grim little masterpiece.  The graphics seem unsophisticated at first, but in fact the color palette perfectly suits the bleakness of the story.

The audio is outstanding. From the shell reloading (agonizingly slow) to the flashback audio (which I won't spoil) to the grotesque wails of the mutants, everything combines to create an atmosphere of horror and despair.

The implementation of the jam focus is thematically appropriate without overburdening the gameplay.

Finding enough resources seems impossible at first. It's technically not, but thematically, this is precisely the point, and it's driven home effectively.

It's hard to find improvements to recommend, but in the spirit of constructive feedback, I felt that the collision wasn't always quite right for certain objects. I also felt that it should be possible to fire over certain obstacles.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the in depth comment! Really makes me happy and means a lot especially if you think it's a masterpiece. I agree about the collisions absolutely, it was just a case of saving time really, stuff like that has put me in endless holes that go on for hours trying to get it just right haha.

The game looks really good, and as many have said the atmosphere is great.

Game felt smooth and I enjoyed it, I think it's espacially pretty impressive for a solo developer.

Great job!

Thans for playing! Glad you liked it so much, was definitely a tough 10 days just by myself.

Loved the monochromatic aesthetic and the sound design of this game, really helped to create that cold atmosphere. Great job!

Developer

Thanks Im glad the 1-bit style worked out!

Man I loved the atmosphere you created with this. I didn't expect a game this polished and well done in this jam, I had a ton of fun playing it. Really good job with this one!

Developer

Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Good that you thaught it was polished haha, I definitely could have used a few more days tbh haha.

I believe I saw some of your devlogs on twitter , maybe...anyways I truly liked your game you did an excellent job on it I also like that there's consequences for leaving something behind and the limitation with 3 bullets , if you had time could you please make a prequel or maybe a sequel to this game and its storyline I truly love it and I'll 100% play it if there is....    what can I say beautiful SFX amazing I like the ambience and the overall feel of the game , 1 more thing to point out I've always liked 1-bit artstyle and you went for that even tho this game wasn't created for me (ofc it wasn't) I took it personally or as a gift so I'm grateful for you for going for this artstyle and color pellete therefore after saying alot of things you deserve a solid 5/5 for everything excellent job and I hope to see more from you soon don't stop what you're doing , thank you alot for this amazing submission! :D

Thanks! Really means a lot, honestly makes me so happy. Glad you loved it so much. Id love to do more but my time is super limited haha

This was an absolutely incredible submission. The sound effects were total nightmare fuel and the first time I saw one of the creatures coming towards me I actually got spooked by an 8 bit cosmic horror beast haha. The concept of rationing your resources worked really well here, "Do I use my last bullet to take a chance on this chest for more ammo or do I kill the demented creature barreling toward me?" Really great use of the theme choosing wood to provide heat for your family or to defend your house. The little story lines each night is what really sold it for me, sometimes they were a little funny but sometimes they really made you feel the dread of a post apocalyptic world. This felt like a great mix between Oregon Trail and Project Zomboid. My only suggestion would be to add some pathfinding for the enemies since after a little bit I realized they were easy to get caught on things and suddenly they weren't super threatening. Other than that, very good submission definitely one of my favorites from this jam!

Developer

Thanks man, really appriciate the detailed comment! Honeslty makes me feel so releived and warms my heart. But yeah, the path fiding could be better, but to be effecient I had to stick with the good ol trusty A* to get it up and running and had to rely on the sound effects being haunting and them being something you have to make a decision to deal with .

This is such a cool game. I already mentioned how much I liked it, but survival horror resident evil like games are totally my jam. I love the spooky atmosphere and the dark tone of the game. Some of the things that happen are just so...dark lol

I managed to get what might be possibly the bad ending? I won't spoil anything, but there was a certain female who did a certain something to a certain every single one of my family members and it was quite devastating haha but yeah, definitely fits with the dark tone of the game. Love it!

Developer

There are no good or bad choices/endings just consequences.

Awesome art as always, the title screen/shotgun barrel logo especially. I’m really impressed by the sounds in particular too this time. The atmosphere was really well done.

Notes:

  • for how many SFX there were I wish there was something for each character during text. I’m torn on this because on one hand it’s less atmospheric but then again its a 1 bit game
  • The night events were pretty funny. The first night I got “the zombies did not attack -> consider yourself lucky -> your son died -> don’t let that happen again” which, like, he’s already dead haha
  • The choice events were really fun, but like i said above it was hard to pick up a theme of how things were going because of how varied they were
  • I kept wishing I could skip ahead in the night sections and just read the text all at once
  • The first time I encountered the crates was 3 in a row, so I kept pressing E and seeing “it’s locked” and moving on, and I had to walk away for a bit to realize I could shoot the lock because of the text speed
  • the nightfall indicator is a bit misleading because it says “nightfall” on the bottom but the actual nightfall happens in the top left. Like it seems like it’s trying to indicate phases of the day but the bottom just says the one phase

^ don’t mean to make it sound like I didn’t enjoy it, just trying to provide constructive feedback

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback man! I can see how that's kidna funny. It's really just to introduce the phases at night and how you can loose more family members to each thing haha.
Nightfall is what happens at the end, the last quater is just hurry the hell up section before nightfall.

I Like The Game, I Had Trouble Figuring It Out At First Even With The Tutorial, After That The Game Seem Really Fun And It Was Cool To See The Way You Used The Theme.
