Very good game with simple and yet clever mechanics, but personally i would change death sounds cause i found them absolutely terrifying XD

I would be glad if you tried and rated my game too :)

Submitted

Great game! had lots of fun with that sound design.

Submitted

That was fun. Reminds me some 'game and watch' gameplay. Simple but well done, with lots of humour. Congratz

Submitted

Super nice. It's a simple idea but pulled off well and just felt nice to play. The jump sfx was a particular joy. THUMP

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! I was worried the jump sfx would be a little much but I worked to balance it a bit so it doesn't blow out your sub speakers lol.

Submitted

Really nice game. It feels really good when you manage to catch all the villagers. The art and the sond effects are great. And the dialog and sounds make it really funny too. All in all I really enjoyed playing it, well done!

Developer

Hey thank you so much. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

This was a fun game. there were a few levels that really had me thinking "i hate those engineers". the dialogue box and the screams of the villagers made this fun to play. And with such a simple idea, I was surprised to see so many gimmicks in every level, every time I think one gimmick is already getting old, another one pops up.  And im glad you only need to get 6 villagers over to the other side per wave. if the challenge was to get every single one to the other side, i don't think my heart could take it. by the way. Also looking over your other comments, I also made my game in Gamemaker, were you not able to build it as a zip? because I was able to do so, and I used to have the same problem you did

Developer

Hey thank for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed all the little gimmicks I threw in there.

I definitely could've and should've exported a desktop build in a zip lol.  I made another comment about a game jam I did that wouldn't let you upload zip files and you could only upload an installer so I thought that was the case here. After the rating period is over I'm going to put the .zip file up.

Submitted

Really fun and simple! At first I thought catching the jumping villagers was gonna be hard, but the platform speed and villagers falling speed are tuned really well!
The installer made me a little paranoid, though.

Developer(+1)

I'm really sorry about the installer... I did a game jam a while back that was game maker specific and for whatever reason the website hosting it wouldn't let you upload a zip file so the only option was to upload the installer. I thought that was the case for this jam but in the future I'll figure out how to make a web build as well as upload the desktop build so I don't turn people away with an installer.

Regardless, thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is a lot of fun! Typing some thoughts as I play:

  • The SFX are really great, I love the screaming, and the jump sound fits nicely. I appreciate the varied screams and rescue pings
  • I really appreciate the visual timer on the left so you know exactly how long you have
  • I wish there was a restart button (is there?) sometimes I’d lose too many villagers and have to wait for them all to leave just to fail
  • being able to use A/D in addition to arrow keys would be a nice QoL improvement. Particularly because space is the dialogue button, my hand always rests with my thumb there, so I have to specifically move away from A/D to arrow keys and then back
  • I was going to say there seems to be no incentive to get more than 6 across, but this actually works well with the timer because it takes longer this way
  • launching people between platforms was a lot of fun
  • i think you did a good job with the balancing where I didn’t feel pressured but also lost a few times
  • I chuckled when after a bunch of exposition one of the intros was just “another geyser good luck tho”
  • I’m not sure repeating everything 3 times is worth it, since the mechanics continue between levels, once you do like one or two waves you kind of get the hang of it. I don’t have a good alternative in mind tho
  • sometimes the platform would start so far away that i’d have to rush to get the first passenger on, which felt a bit pointless
  • the last level was really really hard but I got there!

Good job!!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thank you for the detailed feedback I really appreciate it!

I regret not having a restart button, or making the "Level Failed" prompt come up instantly after too many villagers in a wave died rather than having to get the remaining across only to find out you had 5/6 for the wave. Watching my friends play after the jam period ended I saw them yeeting the last villager into the lava just to restart the level faster lol.

Using A/D is a good QOL suggestion, I originally had the spacebar as the continue text button and the jump button but when testing I kept accidently spamming the jump button and skipping text between levels so I had a dedicated jump button and settled on the Z key. I like your idea of having more options for controls so left hand movers don't get tied up!

The three wave mechanic came up because I originally had all 30 villagers come out at the same time but it caused the player to wait for a long time to get all of them onto the first platform and the platform got super crowded. I also tried just having 10 villagers in one wave per level but it made the levels feel really short and didn't allow for enough time to get used to the mechanics. Maybe a more clear level failed condition or only having 2 waves would help out here?

Good feedback on the platform starting location. I didn't want it to start against the edge because I wanted the player to learn they have to move it to the edge to get the villagers on and I didn't want to start it inside a geyser or fireball because visually it looked odd. You're definitely right that it should start closer to the villager spawn, no need to have to move it all that distance at the start of the level.

All in all, thank you for playing and I'm happy you enjoyed it. That feedback will really help out when I can update the game after the Jam!

So funny I had fun with it. It didn't have to hard of a difficulty curve but even when I lost it was great fun

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I guess the difficulty curve can be different for everyone but glad you got through it!

The game is really nice. The screams were sort of a little much and I wish it gave a little more information on how many people needed to get across to win, but it was nice! big score for you!

Developer

Oh the screams were definitely over the top.

There was a prompt at the top of the screen that showed how many villagers you needed to get across to get to the next way but I'll admit it wasn't super clear what it meant.

Submitted

oh, yeah I thought that was how many to get across before the next wave started or something since it reset and started counting again when it got over six, at least i think i saw it do that. it counted fast so i can't be fully sure.

Really Cool Game, I Didn't Really Know How To Play At First But Later The Game Felt Really Good After, I Like The Art. That All, Good Game ;P

Developer

Thank you for playing! I hope the tutorial parts at the beginning weren't too confusing but it's always hard to tell when I'm first making the game.

Submitted

I really wish you didn't make an installer.

The game is very well made. The core mechanics are fun, the puzzles are well designed, and the art and sound effects are all funny. Really great game.

Developer

In the future I'm going to figure out how to use the HTML5 export option in Game Maker, I just didn't have the license set up before hand but hopefully that should let you play in the browser.

Thank you for the feed back though, and I'm glad you enjoyed my game!

Submitted

Yeah, GMS requires you to pay for the browser exports. But I think you should be able to export a desktop build without using an installer.

If you decide you don't want to pay for the web license, take a look at Godot. It's free and open source. I was using both GMS and Unity for years, and Godot seems to have all of the strengths of both of those engines combined into one. I made the switch 2 months ago and I've never enjoyed game development more.

By the way, I just stumbled onto your Cowboy Legs YouTube video and subbed immediately. That video was well made and absolutely hilarious.

Developer

I've been thinking about switching to a new software for a while now. I figured when Opera bought out Game Maker it would improve the development of the IDE, which it definitely did but it also turned everything into subscription based payments and that's super annoying. I'll probably give Godot a try since the indie dev community has been saying a lot of good things about it. I'm just so used to Game Maker and have all the hotkeys ingrained in my muscle memory that it can be hard embracing a new software.

Also thanks for checking out the YouTube channel, I'll be making a video on this game since the development was pretty fun and started out looking completely different from the final product!

Submitted

I lucked out, because I picked up all of my persistent GMS licenses in a Humble Bundle for 50% off a year or two before they changed to the subscription model. Getting rid of persistent licenses completely was a real scumbag move.

Developer

I got the mobile export and the default license before the subscription model. But I totally agree, I don't want to pay $10 a month just to export web games maybe twice a year...

Fun game with very fun sound effects! I like the narrator commenting each level. Good job!

Developer(+1)

The narration before each level started as a tutorial to teach the player but then it kinda turned into a bunch of jokes because for whatever reason I set it up in a way that every level had to have some sort of pre-level text so I just filled in whatever came to mind.

My narration was still not as good as your game though, you had a whole story start to finish!

Submitted

Storytelling can be done in many different ways, even without a single word. Playing your game I find myself wishing complete the levels because I wanted to see what was written in the next log. I really appreciated the irony and the jokes :)

Balmy pass is an incredible game with alot of potential the artstyle is amazing I like your approach to the focus , you made an amazing game therefore without a second though I'll give you a solid rating thank you your amazing submission!

Developer(+1)

Hey, thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll go check out your game!

Submitted

No need to thank me for anything you're the amazing game dev who made Balmy Pass , I should be thanking you instead , I'd be happy if you tried out my game but at the same time I don't want you to think that everything I said about your game is just to make you test and play mine , I meant every single word your game is amazing! :D

Developer(+1)

Haha thank you thank you, but this is why I love game jams because we all get to come together and check out eachother's work!

Something tells me that you loved playing Lemmings as a kid ! Didn't expect to have so much fun just from reading the game's concept though here I am, laughing my head off at the sound of dying villagers. The platform jump has nice satisfying kick to it too, though a small music loop could carry the game even more.

Graphics are minimal but they more than do the job for the game's concept and I loved the humour at the beginning of each stage.

Developer (1 edit)

I actually played a little bit of Lemmings at a friends house when I was younger. The concept for this game came up because I thought, what if I make a platformer but you control the platform?

I really regret not making time for a music loop, especially after playing your game that had such a satisfying sound track. Definitely going to focus more on that in the future!

Submitted

I really enjoyed playing this :D especially the sound design and the throwing mechanic made it reaalllyy fun(yes sometimes it was fun to hear/watch your villagers die). Ever new development in the level or mechanic that was introduced made the level feel increasingly challenging and kept it interesting. I found specifically the fireball or that you cant have all villagers walking the same way when you throw them making it a bit more difficult to control the flying velocity(at least it felt like that maybe it was just me ^^') a bit frustrating at times but that barely took away from the enjoyment i got from playing this game :).

In the beginning i thought it might be fun to have the villagers actually walk back off the platform once they walked one full cycle on it to make it a bit more challenging but specifically in the later levels that would have just made it unnecesarily challenging.

A really fun a game!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for the feed comment! My friends and I had quite the laugh when I implemented all their screams for the villager deaths. I wanted it to be so ridiculous that it didn't feel super frustrating when losing a level because maybe I went a little overboard with the amount of lava...

In earlier prototypes of the game I actually had the villagers walk back off the platform but It made for a lot of waiting/frustration and I decided to scrap it. But thank you for the feedback!

Submitted

Love your art style. The retro feel with the great sound design really made this an enjoyable playthrough. That feeling of losing a whole wave of villagers to lava and watching the animation of them flying away in pain towards the horizon is hilarious! That last level though... I lost so many villagers, it quickly became a humanitarian crisis. :D Excellent jam entry!

Developer

Hey thanks for playing! I was stuck on how I wanted the villagers to die from the lava and I had a weird bug where they flew to the top of the screen so I decided to just go with it. And that last level is a total nightmare, those poor villagers hah

Submitted (1 edit)

Was genuinely interesting at how the levels evloved and got harder lots of fun. Also the villagers screaming flying in to the distance never got old, hilarious.

Developer(+1)

Yeah the villager screams became a joke between my friends while I was working on this jam so I just had them record their screams and here we are lol. Thank you for playing!

Developer(+1)

Developer note here: my friends have reported that chrome is blocking the download because its seeing the installer (BalmyPass.exe) file and flagging it. You should be able to tell chrome to "keep file" and then click "more options" to let windows download it. If the download gets blocked entirely you might have to check the setting on your antivirus software.

I checked on the game maker forums and this problem comes up quite a bit with .exe files and there's no good way around it especially in a limited time setting like a game jam. Sorry about the hassle but thank you for enduring it to play my game!
