How does your game implement the focus, Multi-Use?
The multi-use device in this game is the devil's trident. The player is in control of the devil and needs to chase and catch all the humans that run around in hell and throw them into lava pits. To do so the trident can be use in several ways: it can be used to poke humans to make them jump, it can be used to ram it into the ground to block humans from falling off of cliffs, and it can be used to build a bouncy platform to catapult humans throught the air.

Which art and audio did you / your team NOT create?
Most of the assets are bought or were free like the base lava tileset/backgrounds, the devil, the ice door sprites, tutorial input sprites, and the font in the credits screen.
All other visuals are modifications of these base assets, like the humans and some custom animations.

Which art & audio did you / your team create BEFORE the jam started?

This is such a fun game!!! You did an awesome job. The levels are tough and clever, but with enough freedom that I could see a few ways of solving them. This is legitimately a game I would pay for it if were fully expanded with more levels. The sound effects were spot on, but I think I would like a little background music, personally.

It got pretty difficult pretty quickly, but I think some of that could be accounted for by keeping the humans contained a little more at the start. To have them fall all the way to the bottom right from the start makes it difficult. If you want to make the player to have to start at the bottom, then it would be better to start the humans there instead of letting them fall because it felt a little like I was being punished before I could even start the level. Level 3 is a good example, as soon as I recall all of the tridents there is a group of humans that immediately fall to the very bottom. Even though it probably becomes easier with them in that position, it feels like a punishment. I am fine with them dropping to the bottom because I miscalculated or made a mistake by not blocking off a section prior to launching them because then I am punished for my own doing.

Overall this is a fantastic game. Use your current levels as later, more difficult levels and build out some more levels in between to soften the difficulty curve and this is a commercial level game! Great work!!

Thank you for playing, enjoying the game, and the detailed feedback!

I'm surprised that you didn't hear the music because there is some. It's not super loud but it is there.

The problem with the level design or in general with the tutorial is that I don't like written tutorials (like: "you can do this and that and if you do this you can do that with the other item"), there is nothing wrong with them, but I think "show, don't tell" is much nicer. This is what I tried in Level 3. The idea is that you enter the room and above you the first humans get catapulted into the lava which is supposed to teach you about the bouncy tridents. Then when you recall the tridents the blocker is removed and the humans falls down. The idea here was to teach the players that a trident can block and if you forget to block, they will fall down.

It's quite hard to teach such things without constructed not natural situations like this. But I try to redo the tutorials to and make the game easier to understand, maybe I will find a way that feels less punishing. In general it's better to not teach all the stuff in one room so I want to add at least another tutorial room anyway.

Right now I'm doing some experiments with people NOT falling down from cliffs but from small steps, but I'm not sure if I like that. It would make Level 4 much easier but it removes a lot of the chaos which I really like :D

Yeah, that totally makes sense! And I completely agree with you. I loved your tutorial and how you explained things to the player. I wouldn't change that at all. For me personally, I got that the trident blocks because you had one human be both blocked by a trident and launched into the lava with the other trident. If you wanted another example of the trident blocking humans, one thing you could do is place the humans at the bottom where they would normally fall and then split that little section down the middle with a trident to block humans from going the entire span (I hope the description makes sense lol). But I am just some random dude on the internet and this is personal preference, so take what I say with a grain of salt. What you produced here is incredible and I am very impressed with it. Really well done.

As for music, I did hear music on the credit screen at the end, but not during game play. During game play I just heard the ambient sounds/static, which was a great touch.

I just went back and re-played it. After I got through the levels and past the credit screen I went back to the main menu and the music continued. Maybe it's something to do with the browser that is causing that.

Developer

Well, I think that all feedback is valuable, no matter if it's from a stranger from the internet (which also counts for basically everone I don't know personally :D) or a friend. As long as feedback is more than "your game is shit" I appreciate the feedback, so thanks for the feedback!

I'm done with most of my feature reworks and I am restructuring the tutorials now. When I get to the blocker level I will see if I can make it better. What I don't like right now is that the main tutorial, the human bouncing on the trident and flying into the lava is quite easy to miss, so I will improve this someone anyway.

I will keep an eye on the missing music, can't really explain how it could vanish but would not be the first bug in a game :D

Really cool game, I love the use of the restriction. Although I feel like the humans should be smart enough to not walk off of edges.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm working on version 1.1. right now and there will be a feature called "smart humans" that stops the humans from jumping down ledges. It's optional but I like when player can tweak games to their likings. In a proper full game I think stuff like this could be pretty nice a a type of human from a certain circle in hell, maybe sloth. They are so lazy they refuse to jump down into the lava so you have to poke them even more :D

Submitted

I honestly agree with basically what everyone else is saying. Very well executed all over the board. Sound Both the theme and restriction and art all very good! Although the difficulty did rise pretty quickly. Great over all

Developer

Thanks for playing! :) Yes, it seeems like it's too diffcult in some parts but I'm working on this for version 1.1 (should be ready soon) with some reworked puzzles, some helper features like "smart humans" and stuff like picking up single tridents and more tridents for mor fun :D

Submitted

Very cool concept and very well execution! I liked this game a lot! Well done!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you like the game :) There will be a version 1.1. pretty soon.

Submitted

I love the ideas in this, especially the lemmings vibe. Unfortunately by the 4th level it already felt extremely difficult and tedious to beat. I think it might help if the humans moved slower and also if you could recall specific tridents instead of all of them at once. Some jump buffering would also improve the feel of the platforming. The visual aesthetic is great though and I liked the sound effects. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! :)

Yes, level 4 is a bit on the hard side, because when they fall down you have to bring them up again the whole level again. I wanted to add a puzzle that also requires some timing but recovering from failing in this case is not very good. I'm already working on version 1.1 to address many of these issues. I have to see if I can do something about the jump buffering though, but I will add it to my to do list!

Developer

I published version 1.1 with some improvements for the character controller like the jump buffering you mentioned and also coyote time and better air control.

Submitted

Very fun! I love the art and animations. The levels were smart, but challenging. Love this interpretation of the theme. Great job!

Developer

Thank you very much! :) I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

Submitted

Very nice game! Cool use of the multiuse idea! I found the bouncing on the trident really fun! Good submission!

Developer

Thank you for playing and enjoying the game! :)

Beautiful art, all cohesive, great feeling game. Loved the little tutorial section at the beginning. The puzzles actually got quite challenging near the end! I did run into a bug I think where the lemming dudes would sometimes slip by my blocks, but maybe they were doing something, I'm not sure, it only ever happened when I wasn't looking at them. Great game!

Developer

Thanks a lot! :) Did you have trouble solving the puzzle at the end at all or was it just not so easy to find the solution? The humans should of course not be able to move through the blocks but it's physics bases, so how know if somehow they can squeeze through under certain conditions. I will keep an eye on the issue and see if I can reproduce it.

Submitted

This idea was really well executed, the sound effects were very satisfying, the music great, the humor and art were awesome. I honestly think with maybe another pass at the control scheme (maybe adding controller support), maybe adding an overarching story, and nailing the level design this could be a full release.

Developer

Thanks for playing! :) I'm glad everything worked so well together in the end.

Right now I'm working on a post game jam update that will fix and improve some issues and will also bring back the controller support and probably custom keys so everyone can set up the controls they way they like.

Actually I thinking about maybe turning this into a full release. We'll see. When I can come up with enough stuff that the player can do, why not :D

Submitted

I think you could do a full release, I'm not even sure you'd need THAT many more verbs/enemies/etc introduced to keep it fresh. I think the biggest challenge would be level design

Submitted

Great game! The idea is really creative and both cute and dark at the same time and the theme is nicely incorporated. Love it!

Developer

Thank you for playing and the nice comment! :)

Submitted

Nice and consistant art style. Clever use of theme and use of humour. No complaints from me. Very solid entry.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and liking it! :)

This is fantastic. The game is gorgeous, the music and sound effects are great, and the concept is really unique and fit the theme perfectly.

The only issue I had was with the 4th level, the timing on the jumps and pokes felt a bit too tight. Your team did a really great job. If you ever expand this into a bigger game, I would love to play it.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and enjoying the game!

Yes, the jumps in level 4 can be tough. I found it rather easy but of course of you design the puzzle and the character you know exactly how it works. I plan on releasing an update after the jam is over that addresses these issues and makes the game more enjoyable for everyone, I hope :)

Submitted

Pretty fun and challenging game, which truly followed the theme to its core. The lack of controller support had me pulling my hairs out haha.

Will be playing this one again soon!
Watch the vod here:

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! :) After the jam is over I'll add the controller support again. I don't even know why I disabled it at all :D But I'm glad to hear that you will play it again!

Submitted

Dude, I loved the game. Im coming back for more!

Developer(+1)

I'm just watching your vod. Maybe wait for the controller support. I'm sorry you had to use another tool to make the game work for you :)

Developer(+1)

I just finished your vod. Thanks for the awesome rating!

It was quite interesting to see someone play the game. I really did not expect that these puzzles are so hard to solve. And I have absolutely no idea how you got 4 or 5 tridents. This should not pe possible at all :D

Submitted

Marcus, for the love of everything you cherish, leave my tridents alone! haha. I loved that feature*! Hit me up either on twitter(@punisherx6), faster, or through here when you got a new build for the game.

Developer(+1)

No worries, I think I will increase the amount of tridents to make finding a solution easier. When a puzzle needs three tridents the player will have 4, maybe 5, it's not decided yet. The bug to basically get an infinite amount of tridents is already gone though and will no be part of version 1.1 anymore.

Submitted

Had a lot of fun with this one! Chasing around humans with my trident was a blast. I also got stuck on the 4th level, but other than that felt very well polished! Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing and having a blast! :) It's really fascinating to see where people have problems with the levels. To me Level 4 felt pretty easy, but of course I designed it :D

Submitted

Neat game, well done. Good use of focus and theme. The only criticism I can tell, is that sometimes when you got the solution, but let human goes, it's a can be a bit tedious to repeat all. Tutorial is just what it needs. Controls are good.

Overall, Great job !

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it even though it can be tedious some times :)

Designing the puzzles in a way that they are not annoying was the hardest part. Harder than I expected to be honest. That's why in Level 4 instead of 5 humans you only have to bring two to the lava pit which, if you do it right, can be done at the same time.

Submitted

This was the best one I've played so far. Reminded me o Lemmings

Art, sound, and idea.
I just wish it was a little easier, maybe I didn't get how to really use the tridents

Developer(+1)

Thank you! :) Lemmings was totally an inspiration for the game.

If you have trouble with a puzzle let me know and I can help or use the skip cheat (less fun but at least you can continue playing).

Submitted

Wow, that blew my mind! What an awesome game! I couldnt beat the 3rd level, maybe I missed an obvious solution.

The controls are a bit on the confusing side though, but since there is virtually no harm done (other than to the poor souls of the damned) it wasnt that big of a deal.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! :) If you still can't beat it maybe check out this video someone recorded earlier:

You're not the first who has problems with the controls. I found it super hard to find a fitting control scheme for keyboard only. When I played platformers on PC Commander Keen was still a thing. I guess times change and cursor keys and Space and CTRL are not really used anymore :D When the whole jam is over I will upload a version with updated controls so hopefully everyone can enjoy the game.
Submitted

It was the 4th level I couldnt do (missremembered) - and he skipped on it as well xD guess its really that hard

Developer(+1)

Next time I try to make it a bit less hard. I would loved to add some sort of helper mode that gives out hints in the game, but this was totally out of scope for the jam :D

Submitted

Best game I've played in this jam so far, good music, good gameplay, perfect implimentation of theme and mutli-use. Only complaint is my fingers got confused often trying to put my plans into motion, other than that A*.

Developer

Thanks a lot for the nice words! :) I'm also not 100% satisfied with all controls but lets just say it's a game about the devil and of course he likes to punish us puny humans :D

Submitted

This is awesome. I didn't even mind when I messed up and had to go poke them some more. How you managed to nail both cute and evil is genius. KUDOS

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I'm glad you like it! In fact I made a pact with the devil himself to help me with the game... Remember the little human in level 3 that bounces of a trident and jumps into the lava? That's me :D

Submitted

Very fun game!

And a challenging one )) Got me Lemmings flashbacks))

Liked trident throw mechanics, overall feel of the game and most of all that devil not dying in lava)))))

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Lemmings was indeed an inspiration. I hoped I could add even more mechanics but it's not that easy to come up with cool stuff in a week :D

Submitted

Exactly, reminded me a lot of Lemmings too.
