I see the effort you put on it. The mechanic is prety solid, add a randow generated world it will be cool! :)
Thank you tons for trying it out! This is the plan. As it is only my second game, we shall see how advanced random map generation will turn out to be... I hope I will manage.
Hey it's a cool idea ! It's a shame you didn't get to do more but we can see where it's going and that'd make for a pretty neat game.
I am so glad I could ready the concept, in the least! Now, on to the gameplay.
I'd like to see where this goes. Some of the little details are really nice - the jump in particular feels really nice, and the visuals are cool!
You are too kind! As the general feedback seems to be positive, I am very excited to continue to work on this game. As this is only my second game, I will need to spend some time researching how I can implement all my desired mechanics. Updates will come!
What is there feels really polished, I see that you spent a lot of time on the animations for example. Curious how this will turn out with more development time!
Many thanks for your kind words! I have a rather solid set of ideas for the game as of now and I cannot wait to be able to implement them (following a little Googling... or rather... much Googling!)
It's sad that the game isn't finished, but I hope you finish it. Good job!
I am very excited and committed to completing this game! It will, however, take time as this is only my second game and I still have so much to learn in Godot.
Thank you, once more!
As you've said this is more of starting point, but its a great start! Read what you have planned, followed you and will check back later on your progress! The graphics are great and I was really charmed by the stump actually falling when I dug around it. I dug around the house hoping it would fall too but nah. You've probably already thought of this but if you aren't going to give the house physics you should probably put unbreakable blocks under it or something. I dug so much that I never could have gotten back if it was enterable.
As far as my prefence goes, I would like if I could hold the chop button to break blocks rather than mashing it. Dunno if it thats better for the game feel or not, just something I would prefer.
Good work!
Oh and a funny bug I found. If you partially destroy the three blocks surrounding the stump, like get them to the last animation stage, then destroy them, the stump doesn't fall! Haha games are weird.
There is absolutely zero chance I will be able to understand or comprehend how to fix that bug... so time for a back-up story... uuh... something about a stump-holding ghost named Elowen...
Lol that works.
I noticed when the blocks reach that final animation frame, the player falls like 3 pixels in to them. I would bet the stump bug is related to that. Maybe that final animation frame has the wrong sized collision box or something?
I purposefully gave the last frame a smaller hitbox so the player could feel that they are "almost through"... but maybe this should be changed? Open for feedback on this - do you think the blocks should have a full hitbox until they are broken?
I'd at least see if the change fixes the stump glitch because if its the cause of that glitch it could cause all sorts of other ones in the future.
Otherwise, I think the smaller hitbox gives the effect you were going for and seems fine to me.
Thank you kindly! I may have even surprised myself with my second game's graphics.
I absolutely adore small details when I play others' games, so I hope to be able to add more un-expected titbits like the stump falling into Winter Breaker.
There is a plan for the no-physics of the house, as the "rock" block on the edges at the start, will be invisible barriers and borders to items and different areas (as well as other blocks.) This is an idea that will need some testing, so we shall see with this one...
My idea for this game was, through Freezing (due to the Freeze Meter running out and not being able to return to the start in time), you learn to dig in such a way that you are always able to return to the surface. But I understand there is a chance this idea may not be so fun. A concept in progress. Perhaps it will work, perhaps not.
Your preference gave me an idea! Though I do not think I will use holding to dig (so as to make the game more difficult), I like the idea of an "AutoChop" mechanic which could be bought or un-locked down the line.
Thank you again for chiming in!
After reading your plans for future development, this will be such a fun game! Good luck with continuing the development :D For some reason only when holding left and up or down I could break two blocks at once which was pretty fun, so maybe another tool could break multiple blocks at once in a similar way
A tip of the hat for the kind words!
This was, of course, a planned feature that you discovered. So well done for discovering it! For me! So I can add it to the ga-
In all seriousness, one of my ideas was the ability to equip different weapons you could buy as you progress. Your idea is stellar and I am almost certain I will implement it!
Thank you again.
Really cute art style, I recommend checking out GB Studio - it would be perfect for this kind of game :)
Much appreciated! I have a friend who uses GB Studio. As I understand, it emulates the limitations of the Game Boy as well? I would absolutely consider it for a new project!
After playing your game I would definitely recommend checking out GBStudio as well! It doesn't just emulate the limitations of a Gameboy, it actually conforms to those limits and the end result can be played on an actual Gameboy (or on itch via embed)!
Hey, I believe that it is a really cool concept! I love the art style. For now it's hard to rate the gameplay highly because as you said it yourself in the description, it is not exactly finished. I am really interested in how the game will look like if you decide to continue development. Few tips:
For the first few minutes I wasn't really sure what to do at all. I broke the block next to the axe stand and tried to leave the area. It would be nice to indicate that we are supposed to dig down :)
I think that adding an outline to the tile that you can break would help a lot. While we are at it, it would also be nice to be able to break tiles diagonally from the player - this way we could make make-shift staircases for getting back to the surface.
I already saw that you have many ideas regarding this project from your itch.io page and they all seem great! I followed you and I can't wait to se where this project goes
Thank you so much! I am quite excited about all the mechanics I have in mind, so will definitely continue development.
I very much appreciate your tips and feedback and might incorporate everything you mentioned. Visual cues are my jam and I would create graphics and animation for when the player has not done an expected action in a certain amount of time.
You will also be able to enter the house from the start of the game (the button for entering will come up before the axe) and perhaps the game manual could be lying in there on a table.
The outline is a must! The chopping diagonally is something I will look into. I do not want to make getting back up too easy - which allowing diagonal chopping may do, as I want the player to have to use some strategy to make it back up in time (before Freezing), using the High Jump and other mechanics I will add to the game. The limited movement was a planned feature in this case, but I will try out diagonal movement and see how it feels. Much appreciate all the suggestions.
This is only my second game, so it could take some time for the next update to arrive. It is all a fantastic learning experience! Thank you again for your feedback.
Really cool concept. There isn't much right now, but I think you could make a really fun game out of this. I hope you continue development. Good luck.
P.s. I really liked the color palette
I appreciate that! Thank you. I have a number of ideas for features and gameplay mechanics to add, so I will certainly continue to work on the game.
Wanted to try something other than black and white, many thanks.
i dont actually understand how to play and what to do(
I have now written a description on the game, describing how to play. I have also included a disclaimer in it regarding the game's current state. I could not afford enough time to the project to include most of the mechanics I wanted and spent much of it making the blocks breakable, so the game only has block-breaking and an end-screen if the Freeze Meter is empty. I very much like this project, so will work on it after the jam.
Thank you for checking it out!
I want to play more, but I just can't seem to figure out how to move on from the first screen. Maybe some instructions would be helpful
Thank you for the feedback! I was not able to finish most of my desired game mechanics in time and the game currently only has block breaking and an end screen when the Freeze Meter runs out. I have added a description explaining this, as well as the controls and the mechanics I wanted to implement now.
