How does your game represent Mode?
The first (and obvious) is a play on words. The second is the mode switching between rounds. The player swaps between a building mode (the time to plan and fortify defenses), and a battle mode (the time for enemies to attack you).

Was fun building stuff and trying to make my moat big.

It's an impressive game, for sure. With some more balancing, it could definitely work really well.

  • Some transparency would also make this game a lot more strategy-based as to just gambling. Damage numbers, tower range, enemy health, number of enemies from each direction.
  • An issue I faced is that this does not seem deterministic - sometimes the exact same start layout and same enemy spawn will have different results - e.g. sometimes you take one damage, sometimes you don't. This might be from how the enemy is positioned when it spawns, but it just feels weird.
  • The build area being asymmetrical is interesting - it seems unbalanced, but I don't mind it much.
  • I'm not sure why HP Regen and Moat goes up exponentially in price while HP Limit does not?

Enemy spoilers below...

Why are the runners after day 30 very fast, though? I'd assume that the intended way was to use alligators, but there's often too many of them that it isn't space viable. Or maybe that's meant as a "death sentence" kind of thing where you're meant to lose soon after? No other tower can even get close to shooting it down without some stray projectile luck.

Great game! love the colours. Compelling mechanics!

The moat mechanic brings an interesting spin to a familiar format. Very creative!

With some fine tuning, I think I could sink a lot of hours into this haha. Particularly if you leaned into the moat thing, like if you could pay for a deeper moat that slowed enemies.

Good job! The classic tower defense gameplay plays well and I love the intro. It did feel a bit repetitive at times but it's a game jam so time to make content is always limited. Nice game!

I would be grateful if you checked out my submission as well!

The moat mechanic is a great spin on TD! This could easily be expanded on in a post-jam version, like having the environment shape how your moat grows. Nice work!

Yeah this game is right up my street really brings me back to flash game days  !  actually quite addicted to it haha

Fun base defense, expanding the moat to make room for better defenses and such was a cool idea. Bonus points for the play on words

Love the style. The enemies being walking hammers is fantastic, the overall atmosphere is cute and fun. Great stuff, excellent job!

great opening, I had fun

Super cute. I wish that there was some indicator of where the stronger enemies were going to come from because you don't make a lot of money each round and the cost to defend all 4 sides is really high. I lost several times by having to guess which side to add the one thing I could buy to and then multiple stronger enemies came from the other. Really like the concept.

i like it! i'm a big fan of the sounds lol, they're surprisingly calming. similar to other people it took me some time to realise that you place towers *in* the moat, and a radius around the towers would be nice, but otherwise nice work!!!

I love we immediately opens with a story.

I think a slight tutorial might be needed, just a simple instruction that we only can build in the moat. Since in the beginning I was quite confused why I can't put down my cannons.

Nice tower defense!

First and foremost I liked the story. Combined with only being able to build on your moat it made for a quite complete setting and fundament of the game. As for the gameplay, it was pretty smooth and relaxing! However for me the difficulty curve could have been a bit more interesting, where tactics play a larger role. Nonetheless well done:)

i'm a big fan of tower defense games so i'm super stoked someone made one for this game jam. this is a really solid base! i liked the central idea of having an upgrade for space to build, but i felt it was really dangerous to invest so much when income is pretty low and there's no immediate increase in player power. i also deeply felt the lack of several tower defense mainstays, like tower range indicators and enemy wave previews, especially in the early game where betting on the wrong lane could lose you the game pretty quickly.

(also i think this is a bug, but it feels really bad when your turrets miss enemies)

Fun polished tower defense game. Don't think I've played one where you had to upgrade your real estate like this but it was interesting. I thought it was pretty challenging, I haven't been able to survive too long so far but I think I just need to play longer. That being said, if the idea is a switch between building mode to plan and battle mode, I think there should be some indicator of the enemies to come so the player can plan around it. Otherwise it becomes trial and error until you find the correct strategy which feels less engaging. Still a solid game, nice job!

This was pretty great, always love a good tower defense game! One thing I found pretty frustrating was the lack of information about where enemies were coming from, it always felt bad when the highest concentration of enemies would spawn in on the path I didn't get to add new towers to that turn. I still had fun with it though, there's definitely a solid foundation here to expand on past the jam if you wanted!

Had a lot of fun with this, and great riff on the theme haha! I tried to maximize my gators but eventually went bankrupt doing so. Great work!

Really solid tower defense game! I like the idea of upgrading a moat as your building space. I kinda wish the moat slowed the enemies.
