In what way does your game fit the theme?
I made up an acronym for CHAOS:

Can Hippos Achieve Outer Space??

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
everything on my own except for the music track (credits in page description)

Great work on the pixel art and gameplay, really unique and fun! Brilliant!

Developer

Thanks! And thanks for playing! I hope you enjoyed :)

I loved this game, played it longer than any other game! The controls were fun, the art was amazing, the replayability was awesome. high marks all around 5/5, except theme where I feel like it wasn't exactly chaos driven or themed. Still amazing job!

Developer(+1)

but CHAOS = Can Hippos Achieve Outer Space??? ;)

Thanks for checking it out and such high praise. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed yourself!

holy crap i missed that! Now its all 5/5!

Developer

Ha! No worries. I put the most work into the acronym so I couldn't let it go un-noticed :P

Pretty solid game. Loved the music and such. I would not put the options and upgrades off to the side. Also I think got an upgrade that I didn't click on so I don't know if I got it for spending 75 coins or what. The one main criticism I do have is that it feel like a lot is going on at one time on the screen. This might feel less that way if the camera was zoomed out more or something. It didn't make it feel unfair or anything just a lot. My first run I avoided things that was background objects because they look similar to foreground objects. Over all this would make a great mobile game. With some particles for fire and some improved animations i'd spend a few bucks to play something like this

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yeah, I reused the sky rock assets a few times at the ground level and made them smaller, but they shouldn't have appeared after blast off. Sorry you had some bugginess with the upgrades. Do you think the side menus detracted from the experience? Where would you have put them? Just curious to see what others would do :)

And the fire (dragon and player) was all particle effects ;)

(2 edits)

They  didn't distract they made it feel unimportant. I mean I played like five times before I even really noticed it was there. The blast off screen would be the place to put it. It's not distracting there since it's between rounds, so that the perfect time to say hey look at me I can make you better. The bugginess I can't say for sure was a bug, but my not understanding if it was a bug or not for most players makes it a bug AND it wasn't a game breaking bug. Also I could have just been confused by the skill tree. Over all as I said it is not a bad game. The mechanics are solid i didn't feel that anything was unfair or cheap.  Moving the camera out some i think makes it easier to plan, but not being able to plan could be a key part of the game. If you added a bit more animations to things and some nice particles and cool sounds you could literally put this on the market store and like do the charge a dollar for no ads and people will buy. Might not be the next minecraft but might get a couple cups of coffee.

It remind me of one flash game where you have plane and must cross on it ocean but in result reach cosmos and light speed.

Anyways your game is great! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I took some classic inspirations. I loved those games as a kid and they feel forgotten to time. Glad you enjoyed yourself!

Looks amazing! Plays really well too. Very ambitious and it certainly paid off! Wish the text was easier to read, but otherwise awesome!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, I failed on making the text readable (or even viewable in one case!) but I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. That's what I get for trying to polish at the 11th hour lol

We really enjoyed playing your game!

The graphics are cute and the music fits. We love the idea of using an acronym instead of taking "chaos" loterally. Very creative! It was a bit hard to get into the game fist, but once you got the hang out of it, its addictive and very fun! Good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I'm glad you enjoyed the game! One of my favorite pastimes is making up weird acronyms with my spouse, so getting to do that with a game jam gave me a good bump in motivation at the beginning.

What in your opinion made it a little hard to get into? Was there something that turned you off to the experience at first? Or did it not present as the type of game you normally enjoy?

Submitted(+1)

I love the sprites you made! they look really good. Also the gameplay is on point :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! I appreciate your kind words :)

Ohhh I totally missed the acronym until I read the theme fit hahaha, niiice. And yes they can achieve it. That speed upgrade is key got me going into space in a second haha.

Is there a highest altitude reached somewhere? If not that would be nice to see. I was thinking maybe below the current altitude as a goal to beat.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

Y'know, highest achieved altitude is in the game. I just forgot to put it on the screen. That's what we get when my last day was 19 hours ending at 2am. And that's exactly where it was supposed to be, too ;)

This was an amazing and very addictive game. I loved trying to get materials and then soaring past my previous best score. There is a problem where I got so many coins that I went into negatives and couldn't upgrade anymore so sadly I could reach outer space.

Developer

Woah, wait. You went negative in coins?? I never saw that happen. The game saves automatically at the end of each run. Mind grabbing a screenshot and sending it to me on discord? Sorry that happened! Thanks for checking it out!

The concept here is super funny, and the dragons are animated super well, good job!

The game was really fun. The Pickup system of the enemys was well implemented, because it served as extra armor against a specific type. I played so long, that I reached the "mission successful" screen after 5 seconds when pressing start mission! xD

Had a lot of fun

Developer(+1)

Ha! Yes, gotta love exponential progression! I love incremental games, so I tried to bring some of that growth absurdity into my design.

I'm glad you appreciated the pickup system. I was really excited by that idea and it's rewarding to see others appreciate it, too <3

This was a really great game, especially for a jam! Obviously, the gameplay loop itself is fun, but I also really liked the small touches. The hippo's expressions when something happened to the ship, the parallax scrolling present especially during take-off, and the best thing would be how obstacles double as collectables, making them basically extra armor shells. As for what I'd like to see improved (just nitpicks, really):

  • When you get a lot of coins, the coin counting animation takes quite a while. I know it can be skipped, but I thought I should mention it.
  • It's not immediately obvious what upgrades you can buy with the currency you have by that point, so maybe the ship UI could be touched up a bit, so you don't always have to read through all of them?
  • As it has been pointed out, the game really ends quickly when some upgrades get to a high level. Is there any reason why the game couldn't go on beyond 330,000 feet? I wanted to see how far I could push the More Water Horsepower upgrade, but I couldn't collect any more rain.

That's about it, just really minor things. Obviously in a jam you can't get everything perfectly, and what you managed to do is already insane. Keep up the great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! It's really wonderful to get positive feedback on aspects I spent a lot of time on, however small. I appreciate it :)

I appreciate nitpicks in game jams! Yeah, I could easily expand my current coin animation method. I think right now it only adjusts up to 1000 per frame, so not nearly enough for the lategame nonsense. I would have loved to do a "highlight purchasable" system for the upgrades, but it didn't make it off the idea board unfortunately. The upgrade UI really ended up limiting me, too. Next time I'll add more flexibility and use the space better. My initial idea was to have space be it's own exploration tier, but of course that got cut for scope creep in the end. The game actually has space dragons in the files, but I never got to implement them properly. It'd be fun to add distant planets and other things, too. Lots of potential for a 'late game' if I kept developing.

Thanks again for checking it out, I really appreciate it !

i like your game idea , good job

Developer

Thanks for playing!

This was oddly satisfying to max out. I got to the point where I was getting mission complete before the first enemy could appear, and I love the big TOO MANY when your coins reach absurd levels.

Developer

Ha! Well done! I considered taking out the "TOO MANY" placeholder and putting in a system to display by scientific notation or something, but I ran out of time. Glad you enjoyed my little unintentional 'easter egg'.

Thanks for checking out the game. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself :)

This game is cool but is kinda hard to play and graphic, design and music were cool  (pls review my game for my rating thx)

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! I've added your game to my play queue. I'll leave a comment when i've been able to check it out :)
