I made up an acronym for CHAOS:

Can Hippos Achieve Outer Space??

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
everything on my own except for the music track (credits in page description)

This was an amazing and very addictive game. I loved trying to get materials and then soaring past my previous best score. There is a problem where I got so many coins that I went into negatives and couldn't upgrade anymore so sadly I could reach outer space.

Developer

Woah, wait. You went negative in coins?? I never saw that happen. The game saves automatically at the end of each run. Mind grabbing a screenshot and sending it to me on discord? Sorry that happened! Thanks for checking it out!

The concept here is super funny, and the dragons are animated super well, good job!

The game was really fun. The Pickup system of the enemys was well implemented, because it served as extra armor against a specific type. I played so long, that I reached the "mission successful" screen after 5 seconds when pressing start mission! xD

Had a lot of fun

Developer(+1)

Ha! Yes, gotta love exponential progression! I love incremental games, so I tried to bring some of that growth absurdity into my design.

I'm glad you appreciated the pickup system. I was really excited by that idea and it's rewarding to see others appreciate it, too <3

This was a really great game, especially for a jam! Obviously, the gameplay loop itself is fun, but I also really liked the small touches. The hippo's expressions when something happened to the ship, the parallax scrolling present especially during take-off, and the best thing would be how obstacles double as collectables, making them basically extra armor shells. As for what I'd like to see improved (just nitpicks, really):

  • When you get a lot of coins, the coin counting animation takes quite a while. I know it can be skipped, but I thought I should mention it.
  • It's not immediately obvious what upgrades you can buy with the currency you have by that point, so maybe the ship UI could be touched up a bit, so you don't always have to read through all of them?
  • As it has been pointed out, the game really ends quickly when some upgrades get to a high level. Is there any reason why the game couldn't go on beyond 330,000 feet? I wanted to see how far I could push the More Water Horsepower upgrade, but I couldn't collect any more rain.

That's about it, just really minor things. Obviously in a jam you can't get everything perfectly, and what you managed to do is already insane. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for playing! It's really wonderful to get positive feedback on aspects I spent a lot of time on, however small. I appreciate it :)

I appreciate nitpicks in game jams! Yeah, I could easily expand my current coin animation method. I think right now it only adjusts up to 1000 per frame, so not nearly enough for the lategame nonsense. I would have loved to do a "highlight purchasable" system for the upgrades, but it didn't make it off the idea board unfortunately. The upgrade UI really ended up limiting me, too. Next time I'll add more flexibility and use the space better. My initial idea was to have space be it's own exploration tier, but of course that got cut for scope creep in the end. The game actually has space dragons in the files, but I never got to implement them properly. It'd be fun to add distant planets and other things, too. Lots of potential for a 'late game' if I kept developing.

Thanks again for checking it out, I really appreciate it !

i like your game idea , good job

This was oddly satisfying to max out. I got to the point where I was getting mission complete before the first enemy could appear, and I love the big TOO MANY when your coins reach absurd levels.

Developer

Ha! Well done! I considered taking out the "TOO MANY" placeholder and putting in a system to display by scientific notation or something, but I ran out of time. Glad you enjoyed my little unintentional 'easter egg'.

Thanks for checking out the game. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself :)

This game is cool but is kinda hard to play and graphic, design and music were cool  (pls review my game for my rating thx)

This game is why game jams exist. What a masterpiece.

Developer

<3 super kind words, thank you!

One of my favorite games in the jam. Loved the concept and the execution. The game was extremely fun to play!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I appreciate the kind words :)

Enjoyed the game! I like how you can turn getting hit into collecting items. Made for an interesting twist on the learn-to-fly sub-genre. I spent... longer than I'd like to admit upgrading my spaceship ;)

Developer

Ha! Sorry to use up more time than you thought. I want to make jam games to be finished in under 10 minutes and I definitely failed at this for this one. Otherwise there's a chance folks won't get to stick through the whole experience.

I'm happy to hear you liked that mechanic. I was really excited about that when I stumbled upon it and I want to explore it more.

Thanks for checking out the game!

This was definitely an enjoyable experience all around. I love the dual purpose armor/currency, the adorable artwork (especially the sky swapping), and the wonderful name. Great job!

On a side note, how is the game supposed to end? I picked up an upgrade and then the next run I immediately won. Wasn't sure what I had done.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love seeing dual purpose design in games. I see a lot of it in board games. I'm glad I was able to pull off the "turning enemies into pickups" thing in this way, too.

The end is at 330,000 ft. For earth, this is known as the Kármán line, where the earth's atmosphere ends and space begins. It was fun to try to build exponential progression to make it end so quickly. Yeah, the "more horsepower" upgrade doubles your ascension speed each time. I think at around 8 or 9, it makes you win in a few seconds. Unfortunately, there's a bug where you don't get to see the final background because the first few get skipped too quickly and causes it to mis-assign the backgrounds. Sloppy programming! Woops!

One of the most fun experiencies so far! Great job dude! :)

Sometimes it's nice to take a step back and understand that games are allowed to be easy, simple fun. I think you really captured the essence of what made those old flash games so enjoyable. Well done.

Developer

those are incredibly kind words, thank you :)

there are enough violent, serious, and/or dark games out there. I like to design games that are goofy and don't focus on the player fighting or killing things.

Submitted(+1)

Great movement! It's fun to play. It's impressive that you were able to add skill progression to a jam game.  The only thing that doesn't so good is the menus, those could've been worked on more. Overall great work, well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah, I didn't spend as much time on the font as I should have. The research descriptions ended up being a little difficult to fit in with the space I had, but I'm happy with what I got done in the time we had. I learned a ton, too, so my next game can have even better menus and upgrades :)

Cool Game, well made
