I adore the graphics. The music is cute too! The setting and characters are great.
It would have been nice to get a longer glimpse of the boss character once it was beaten -- and some more cues as to how to attack it; it took me a couple playthroughs to figure that out.
The maze setting seems to have its walls skewed by one tile. If you adjust the centering of the sprite box for Spilled Milk that may help. It pivots on a point on the edge of its sprite, instead of in the center.
Really cute stuff!
After playing through all the games again to do a proper voting, I realized two little flaws in your game. When running on a classic Game Boy (DMG) you will have some slowdown issues, which is almost normal on DMG! :D
But you will also have some of the sprites turn completely black during the boss fight.
I'd consider taking a look at this or blocking the game for being run on a DMG.
Fantastic game, nonetheless! :)
thanks so much for your input, honestly I thought making the file .gbc would block the game on an og Gameboy! It was never intended to be played on a gb 🤠 I’ve created a variable for it for my post jam update
What a great game! Very creative setting.
Thanks so much 🤠
So first of all the game works on a DMG, I don't really know how since it's a .gbc file, but anyway it works, (some slowdowns anyway) :D . Otherwise I also made it on GBC, since you indicate that it is its main version. Good platform game with a nice aesthetic, and a good sense of humor, a distant cousin of "Earthworm Jim" maybe :D But I didn't understand at all what to do with the boss, and I went to the Game Over twice :) . A few little bugs during the maze part too, but it must have been complicated to do, and good idea to use the "whey" for this part :D . Good luck for the Jam :) .
Nice game! The platforming is pretty good, and the art is solid. As others have mentioned, the collisions can be a little janky, the wall-climbing should really have some tutorial, and the boss was confusing. I also think some sound effects would go a long way. For a 7 day jam though, not bad!
I love the art style. The animations are cute and the color palette feels very retro. The story/setting is very creative and fits the jam's theme well. I also wasn't able to figure out how to beat the boss. I hope you continue to work on this as I would love to see further adventures of the cute little milk carton.
Lovely aesthetics as with all of your games! I love the color palette but I will say that they amount of soft blueish gray colors made it a bit tough to see on a non-backlit GBC screen.
I read through the comments on this submission page; I'm impressed that this is your first platformer! There are a few bugs/not-totally-clear-yet mechanics (as to be expected for a game made for a 7 day jam!) but the level design was very good and quite easily led me to what I had to do/where to go, even if I wasn't sure based on the environment's visuals.
The spilt milk mechanic is AWESOME and was super fun. I would love to see that idea fleshed out with other levels.
For the boss, I loved the art work, but I couldn't seem to attack it. I read here that you are supposed to take out its eyes, which I assumed was the thing to do, but I couldn't seem to actually have an effect on it, I was only getting hit.
Nice work for a seven day jam! I would love to see more of it :)
PS - I had the inverse experience as you it seems; I started the jam while I was sick and wasn't able to do much and then crammed at the end after I was doing better hahah
PSS - I thought that the "_/_/_" was a cute addition to the title screen. Do any numbers appear there after you beat the game, like a highscore of fastest time or most points collected or something?
Thank you so much for all of your feedback! I’m so happy to hear people are willing to play it! I did test the colors on my gbc but mine is backlight 🫢 I should’ve thought to throw it in a non backlight one! So thank you for telling me about that!
I’m glad the level layouts were easy to follow! I tried to take inspiration from the level designs of Trip World, it’s one of my absolute favorite Gameboy games, it eases you in to the gameplay so nicely and freely!
I definitely want to explore the spilled milk mechanic in a large way cause I thought of it near the end of my time in the jam and didn’t get to use it in the most interesting ways yet 🤠
I hope you are feeling much better now! I’m still pretty low energy but looking up 🤠
as far as the _/_/_ that’s a really good idea!!! Do you mind if I potentially use it for a future update for the game? I have an idea for it now that you spraked that inspiration in me!
Thank you, I'm all recovered! Glad to hear that you are on the up and up :)
I have yet to play Trip World! Despite developing pretty much exclusively for GameBoy, I haven't played a ton of the original titles. I just really enjoy the restrictions; it makes development simple but complex if you want to explore more intense designs.
You really did fit a lot of design in for this jam. It is a short game but feels like a big experience with the mechanics.
And by all means, feel free to implement the idea for utilizing the "_/_/_" ! It's a nicely woven-in characteristic that could definitely be put to good use.
You have a very interesting game...
Thanks! This is my first true attempt at a platformer so it was a big learning experience trying to figure it all ou. I still got a lot to learn though 😂🤠
This is fantastic! I love the "spilt milk" mechanic. Such a great idea. Pretty amazing what you were able to accomplish in such a short time. Looking forward to seeing what can do with some more polish.
I really appreciate it! I am already putting a little more elbow grease into the game right now for a future update 🤠
First things first: great artwork! The backgrounds look lovely and so do the characters. :) Very stylish. The premise of the game fits the the game jam theme well. Regular movements are smoothe and fine, but the part where you get "spilled" and have to climb is rather difiicult because it isn't very clear where there's collision and where there isn't. I also managed to win the boss fight, but I have no idea how, haha. And oh yeah, nice music - the first notes remind of some other game..?
Thanks for your input! I got in over my head and didn’t have time to polish the final things the way I had initially hoped! But I’m glad you enjoyed the parts I could put time into! As far as the music one of my best friends Isaih made it for the game so I’m not sure what his influences may have been for that specific song but I really love the work he did on the music for the game and really appreciate him!
Awesome game! Great Boss fight!
🤠 thank you!! I hope to continue polishing the game more and more!
A solid (and liquidy) entry! Great level design theme and motivation. The pacing of new abilities is good too. I thought the wall clinging mechanic was a little too difficult to figure out, and got stuck there for a while before giving up
haha nice pun!! And thanks so much for playing and your kind words! Yeah the morning after I submitted the game I had a huge regret leaving the wall climbing maze in 😅
Amazing game, fantastic looks. My main criticism would be that I didn't quite understand what I had to do at the boss fight! :D
I feel so happy knowing people are playing it! Yeah I got sick on Wednesday and severely had to cut back my scope of the project and unfortunately one of the major things to take a hit was the boss battle! The main trick to the boss battle is not getting sucked up by its straw and taking out both of it’s eyes! I hope to update it in a future day after the jam is over 🤠
Great for the moment you are my favorite
Thanks so much!! I hope it makes everyone who plays it smile! Is your icon photo from a gameboy camera?
yes exactly. I save it on my pc with a dumper.
that’s awesome! I do that too with my gbcamera and a gbxcart! Nothing like the gb camera 🤠
This was really fun! I really liked the environment and the music.
I just felt that the collisions of the maze walls made it difficult to progress and I didn't quite understand how I managed to defeat the boss.
Nevertheless, it was great and I would love to see it more polished! Congrats!
Thanks so much for playing and your kind words! I know the game is not without it's bugs but I did my best building from scratch in the 7 day period :)
Hello,
Nice concept which fits perfectly with the theme in an original way !
The moves are great and the dialogues made me smile :)
Too bad I got stuck in the maze without being able to save the ventilation, I would have liked to play it a bit more.
Congratulations !
Hi, Thanks so much for playing! Yeah I got really behind schedule cause I got sick during the jam and didn't have time to balance the maze collisions and the boss battle as much as I initially planned!
