Theme interpretation
The game features a day/night cycle system. You start at dawn and once you reach midnight you are brought back to the start of the level. Still, the most interesting and rewarding part of the game, which is your balloon, is hard to reach in a full day. It pushes the player to plan and learn the level to get to the balloon and take off before it's too late to enjoy a long and peaceful flight.

Also, the short "story" of the game is centered around the survival of the space dream after civilization collapse.

Amazing art ! The game is a bit too short, I would love to see more of that.

It felt very pleasant to play :)

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it! Thanks for playing

Submitted(+1)

it was a little short for my taste but fun overall

Submitted(+1)

Congrats on publishing your game!

I really enjoyed the idea of day/night cycle system where I had to finish the game before it becomes night. That was brilliant.

The graphics were also nice, good job.

Possible improvements would be the ability to skip the intro or perhaps make it shorter as it felt like forever to start the actual game.

Another improvement is to have maybe obstacles along the way to make it harder to reach the balloon.

Overall, short but fun game. Good job!

Really lovely submission, congrats!

I played only one run, going straight to the balloon, saw the "Thanks for playing" label and then kind of nothing more happened (I wait a few seconds). So I'm not sure if I missed something or what happened in my run hah.

Developer(+1)

No it's all I was able to put in a cohesive package, thanks for playing :)

Submitted(+1)

Oh it's ok, but I got confuse by the day/night cycle description (and, in particular, by the thing that was tricky to get to the balloon).

Anyway, great game, keep working on it!

Submitted(+1)

The amount of time spent on the intro was a lot longer then the actual game..

in my opinion the intro was way too long, controls are also not that great.

graphics is very nice, although the layers are a bit confusing sometimes.

overall nice game, very innovative :)

The story and graphics are great! :-D

What I found difficult was to distinguish between foreground and background.

Accidentally I saw a video explaining all about it a few weeks ago:

I hope that it can help you making your game great! ;-)
Developer

Thank you for the video, I'm going to watch that

Great entry, great graphics.

Some improvements I can think of:

  1. Controls feel too sluggish. It's a drag to move around. You might want to increase the speed and make the map bigger to compensate
  2. A better sense of direction.

Overall, an enjoyable game. Good work!

Developer

Thanks for your suggestions! I take note of that

Awesome entry. The worldbuilding, art, and atmosphere work together really well, along with the public domain assets you used (love me some Chopin nocturnes).

The game is obviously short and not "complete," but there's definitely the glimmer of a full game in there, and I would love to play an expanded and fleshed out version of this.

The pixel art is phenomenal. It does get a little jarring with the very low-resolution images in the introduction, but obviously there was only a month in the jam and you made an enormous number of assets.

Excellent work!

Developer

Haha yes, with the low res was also a time concern, otherwise I would have gone for a slightly larger canvas. Thanks for playing and reviewing my game :)

A lovely little experience. I got lost in the universe immediately. Great storytelling, although I wished it was told a bit more through the gameplay (speak to characters in game to reveal more of the lore/discover locations, notes, etc).

The artwork and music are awesome. It draws you into the world and sets the tone perfectly. The characters are very cute and full of personality. The platforming is a little unintuitive (some of the sprint jumps look impossible but the game snaps you to them) but you get used to it over time.

I wish there was a bit more to it. You can't get me hooked into this interesting story and just leave me there! >:( hahaha

Great job overall and a congrats on making such a good game. :)

Developer

Thanks for this precise review :) I'll try expending on this universe in my next game

Submitted(+1)

Really nice platformer, the mechanics are simple yet they layer pretty well, I liked the cinematic style, glad to see more and more games in big jams made with Godot, will take a look at the code later ;) Good job!

Submitted(+1)

Impressive intro, and nice use of public domain classical music. Everything fits in well together. I like how the levels have many layers, I think I saw one of your posts on reddit showing this off.

Developer

Thanks :) Glad you liked it

Submitted(+1)

The art and setting were really cool! Was hoping to have more to explore though, but that only means I enjoyed playing it.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks :) I'll try to expand the gameplay and universe in my next game since this got so much good feedback

Submitted(+1)

Very nice!

Really liked the artwork and the way the platforming worked.
Clearly a lot of work went into this, well done :)

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

I liked it- the artwork and the conceit made it really compelling.

I did find that actual platforming a bit floaty/sensitive, but it wasn’t too hard to get the hang of it. If you ever come back to it, integrating the introduction sequence into the gameplay (maybe cutting back and forth) would, I think, make the game much more immediate.

Developer

Hey, it's a good idea! I'll try finding a way, I think I can take inspiration from many games that did similar things

Submitted(+1)

Nothing short of beautiful. Loved the music!

Developer

Nice, I didn't made it obviously (I'm no famous romanticist composer from the 19th century) but I spent significant time curating them and switching back and forth between them to get the most fitting ones I could find :)

Submitted(+1)

Beautiful pixel art and good story premise. I just wished there was more to the gameplay when I got into the hot air balloon and flew off, such as another place to explore and find clues or some secret.
Great job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thx, it was planned but since the game was almost entirely made by me I ran out of time :o But I'll make a sequel and release a little something in a year or so :)

How do i r8 your game

Developer(+1)

If you did not submit a game to the jam you can't rate it. It's to avoid that a popular game maker gets an unfair advantage from social media fans

(+1)

oh ok yeah i saw someone that was so good they wernt alowwed in a jam or something i think it was a long long time ago

Developer(+1)

Yes it's probably the youtuber dani

UNPLAYABLE Legit cant get passed the damn farmer hag

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Sorry for the bug, it's a jam game after all. You can wait for in-game night time to respawn at the start or play this version https://gotm.io/anicet-nougaret-studio/earths-secrets which has this bug fixed.

I choose not to update on itch.io to stay honest and fair in regard to the jam's rules ;)

(1 edit)

so you cant update it cus its a jam game im new to itch.

how do other people update there games

Developer(+1)

you can, the site doesn't block you, but it's considered cheating and overall a little unfair and rude, even thought this farmer bug is as stupid as 1 line of code

so your disqaulified if you do?

Developer(+1)

I could indeed

(+1)

why did you start making games

Just asking and am inspired by you and another creator cus everyone is so nice on itch

Developer(+1)

Well since childhood I come up with my own creative occupations like drawing and building stuff, so gamedev is very natural for me, it's both the sense of control and wisdom that one has with engineering and the therapeutic benefits that one gets by making art

Submitted(+1)

I believe it's acceptable to update to fix issues like this... see the thread here: https://itch.io/jam/game-off-2020/topic/1090193/can-i-edit-the-game-if-i-submit-...

Developer(+1)

Yea, I know that but It's against my principles, I prefer to show what I was able to do. Stupid bugs I did because of stress and crunch is not something I'd like to hide from myself because otherwise it would lose stake and I would give up efforts to be careful about them the next time. In real commercial release settings, day 1 bugs can be a pain.

(+1)

ill see if i can find other ways out and if i do ill tell you

Developer

Nice ^^

This game is Awesome !!!

:D
