The timing for the fireballs is a bit tricky, but the high jump + downward fireballs was really fun to play with.
Solid entry, congrats!
Thank you! Yeah the fireball timing kinda sucks currently. Overall game mechanics is probably the first thing I'll try to fix up in the future.
That was cool! It's a bit rough around the edges, but the art and monster design is charming, the soundtrack is cool, and the concept is quite fun. The amount of work put into character art and unique music tracks is staggering!
The mechanics are quite janky, but still pretty fun! I liked the concept of the fireball double-jump, even if was a bit difficult to use. I made it to the final boss... where I encountered the horrifying final game over screen. You fit the theme well, to say the least!
While the text gradient might make for good emphasis on key words, it's a bit hard on the eyes when applied to all of the text.
All-in-all, great work!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! Sorry about the iffy mechanics. That's definitely something I'll have to fix up later. Also I will definitely consider making the text look nicer in the future as well.
The Game boy vibes of this game are just great :) The Intro is beautifully Animated and the writing is great. I am just very bad at it so i could not finish.
Thank you so much! This game is kinda at a weird state though. I made the main attack have a bit of delay for the animation which really sucks for some gameplay sections. I will definitely fix that in the future which will hopefully made the game a lot easier. Thanks for playing!
Very good! Although I died at the second boss and the file saved nothing, I enjoyed my playthrough till then. For a jam where things need to be fast, it was sure a long introduction, but a nice one nevertheless.
Thanks for playing! The games saves at the beginning of each level and if you lose all your soul health the save data is deleted. This is an intentional feature for story purposes. I wanted this game to have that feeling of taking a big risk by giving it a bit of an unforgiving feature. Also in the future I'm still going to keep the game relatively short to make up for the unforgiving setup. I'm planning three levels in total (currently the game has 2 levels and 3 bosses). As for the intro yeah I may have made it a little too long (I definitely may have spent too much time on story over actual game play on this one). I will work on trying to make the game a little more fair and enjoyable in the future.
Really awesome work on this one!
I loved the intro sequence! Great work on the dialogues, the UI, and the dialogue avatars.
In all honesty the gameplay was a little too unforgiving for me to progress very far. I kept feeling like I was going to hit a check point but never did. I really liked how the cape animation and the shooting animation looked on the player sprite, but I did notice some sprite tearing when jumping while shooting at enemies, and some slow down when there were more than one enemy on screen. I understand that the game boy is quite limiting, so I can certainly look past these things, but it would be nice to see the design further worked around the limitations. In any case, A Kings Revenge is something to be proud of.
A wonderful job was done pushing the graphical limits during the intro, and its deeply impressive. With a little polish and focus on smoothing out gameplay, I could definitely see myself getting into something like this even at a larger scale. Though I didn't make it far enough to know how big it is. Thank you for creating and sharing this project. The intro by itself is very cool all on its own, so I'm glad I stopped by to see it!
Thank you! I had a lot of fun making the intro! I apologize for the iffy gameplay thus far. Gameplay was probably what ended up getting neglected the most within the game's development sadly. I do plan on coming back to this game and fixing some gameplay problems (main one being huge projectile delay) and overall fleshing it out more. Thus far the game is only two levels and three bosses (due to lack of time I had to reduce level 2 to a cutscene). As for the game length in the future I'm thinking of still having 3 levels as planned although I plan to redesign them to being a little longer and more interesting design wise. I hope I can make this game more fun of an experience in the future. Thanks for Playing!
The intro scene and story were very well-developed! Lots of humor. I like the concept of the Game Over Realm.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! What was your favorite part for humor?
I liked that Death guy :)
Good game with amazing art and a nice storyline. The only problem I had was with the fireball delay :)
Thank you! Sorry about the fireballs I'll fix that up at a later date.
Very well done, lots of effort put into all of this. I like the damage to your soul concept behind it all. Music and cutscene animations were awesome. Keep at it!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
I can see you put a lot of effort into the writing!
Thank you! What was your favorite part?
I appreciate how you've gone the extra mile to contextualise all the gameplay mechanics!
The soundtrack is great! The animations are great too! When Avery the demon lady transformed and grabbed Derick, that was smooth!
Although I had a touch time trying to hit the enemies with the fireballs, I enjoyed playing. Good work!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about the fireballs. I set a wait between clicking the button and shooting the fireballs for animation sake. The delay of the fireball does make it a little harder to time. I'll try to make that a little nicer in the future.
