I like the idea of rescuing people from snow, I like the art style, and the layout of the game. I would have added a compass to help the player with navigation. Nice work with the UI as part of the game. Fun game.

I enjoyed the art style.  I kept freezing and I don't know why, and I would have liked more direction. I really like the footprints.  The way you introduced the credits was brilliant.

One of the better survival games I've played this game jam! Those wolves are brutal if they catch you! I rescued 3 people on my best run, but they just stayed there after I dug them out. So if I was supposed to take them somewhere, I didn't know how. I also didn't know what to do with the items under the first snow pile closest to the camp fire. I got a blue something or other several times, a green beanie one time, and a person one time.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Those items were just decorations and hindrance for rescuing people. At the moment they dont do anyhting. Our two brother team got idea after reading comments and so on that maybe the person could have worn them. We had idea for the people that a rope could have landed to pick them up but time was against to realise that idea.

Submitted

Ah, that makes total sense.

As an aside, I love your hedgebird logo!

Interesting idea! It was also fun to outrun the dogs :) It would be great to have the counter for how many people you saved, and maybe some navigation hits. I didn't quite get whether you can warm up - it was quite unobvious whether staying near the fire helped. Also, when you run diagonally - currently the speed is too fast. But i like the idea - quite creative!

Developer(+1)

The diagonal run was just somehting i knew and was thinking to fix it but in the end because of hurry it stayed in. Ya the warming up should be indicated better and have bigger area where it warms you. Now you need to be very close to the fire.

There is behind calculations that even if you cannot fire the camp it slows down the cooling. :) but there is not really use for that. Also cold gets you faster if its snowing and moving is better than staying standstill.

Sounds cool! But I feel you :D I also made a rather complex temperature system in our game - outside temperature depending on the day, the strength of the thermostat, and the strength of the fireplace, and it all affects the speed of object freezing... But everyone just sees that "it freezes too fast" :D

Very cool game with a fun premise! The graphics were nice, and I really liked the people sprites (including the player). I thought it was very clever how the game information was presented as billboards in the world.

There are a couple critiques I have, however. There doesn’t seem to be enough camp fires! This could definitely be a “me” problem, but, I either had to find my way back to the original starting camp fire, or, maybe if I was really lucky, I would stumble across another camp fire. They just felt very hard to come by, even when I knew I needed one.

Additionally, I think the wolves should be scared away by a lit camp fire, otherwise, there’s not much I, as the player, can do when a wolf spots me but run… and it takes a while to shake off a wolf, all the while I’m getting colder.

Over all, excellent game! If you’re interested, I played your game on a recent stream!

It was fun to watch your play.

The difficulty decissions were made just in the last minutes. No time to test run. But most propably even with the test runs ourselves we would have not noticed its too difficult.

There were ideas for wolves that you could hit them but time run out to do that.

We had some sprites made like lamp post but again time was against us to put them to the level.

From the stream you were wondering what the people are saying. They are saying "Kiitos" or "Kiitti" in finnish language and they mean about like "thank you".

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you all for playing the game and giving nice suggesions.

Nice game! The mechanics are simple and fun. Since the main goal is to rescue people you could add more effects when you rescue them, like particles, SFX, adding a score, etc. That would make it even more pleasant!

Developer

Understandable.

It was fun finding snowpiles and freeing people! One time I almost got lost, but found back to the campfire in the end. I just wished the resuced people would come with  me or I had to lead them to the camp. Besides that it was a fun game :D

Thank you for making it!

Developer

We had idea that rope would come down and pick them up. But no time.

Digging out people was pretty fun, and I generally like the concept! But it would have been nice to have a clearer idea of where to navigate, by having some descriptions of where people got lost, some waymarkers to go by, a compass, or any other navigational tool that also lets you find your way back.

I also wish there was an indication of how close to freezing I am at any point, so I could plan better around when I'd have to return. I don't think being near the fire really reset anything visually, I still had a snowpile on my head!

With some quality of life tweaks I think this would be a neat little game!

Developer

The snow piles on the head were supposed to be the indications but maybe we had too few of them (Idea for the UI is real). Camp fires should have been stronger and reach farther where it affects. Now you might have needed to use it two times to get rid off all the snow.  You have great ideas.

I liked the concept of the game, it is simple and fun, but it is a little complicated to locate yourself on the map since it is very large, and there are few places where one can refer.

Still a great job! :D

Developer

Map making was left like for final hour so we didnt have time to think too much.

Love the concept. Fun game. I rescue 3 people. I find a little hard to find the camp sometimes, maybe a minimap or a compass could be a great feature. Great work.

Developer(+1)

Ya if continued those would be nice additions. For UI is real, I dont know how we would have added those even if we would have time.

An idea, for a map, you can add a sign that says "You're here" or something like that.

I would have loved to work on the pixel art of this game.

Developer (1 edit)

I have my trusty brother to do pixel art. He might not be the best for everything but atleast he is listening my opinions and adjusting the art.

Cool game! I thought the campfire mechanic was cool as well as the signs showing the controls.

I thought the game could have introduced a tutorial; even though I read through the controls it was still a little hard to grasp the game. I couldn't find any survivors either, but I did find wolves.

I also had trouble figuring out what my warmth was. In my attempts to find out where the survivors were I often froze to death.

Overall though I enjoyed it! The pixel art was charming and it was cool to interact with the campfire. Great submission! :)

Developer (1 edit)

Did you find any snow piles? You can interact with them too. Also you need to think like a survivalist. Would you go to open snowfield?
