I admire your dedication to historical accuracy! I really liked the option to turn off the historical fonts - that was a nice accessibility feature. It would have been nice to have some music in the background.

I never realised until playing your game what movable type meant - single character blocks!
This is really polished and could be used in a classroom to show how movable type worked.
It was a bit small for me in browser mode - would have like a full screen option as the target boxes would have been easier to slot into.
Great subject matter to pick - one of the greatest inventions of all time.
As others have mentioned it does get repetitive without a timer or similar to make it competitive (multiplayer maybe?). I imagine it might be more fun to play in full screen on a tablet where you could use your finger to drag the letters.

The gameplay is smooth and the artwork is amazing. A timer or some sort of difficult for player would improve the gameplay.

Overall the game is well done.

What a solid game! Not many different features but the ones implemented were just perfect. It's a lesson I keep trying to learn that less is almost always better if it's solid and well polished. Nothing feels "thrown in for content". From the look, to the cozy effects on score and board as you put down the letters it all fit nicely. I also think you deserve a gold star for the fact that you made the font optional, it's a very odd QOL addition to see in a jam-game but for me it made the differens between playing and not playing.

Haha, I don't like to admit it, but I didn't realise that an empty block for a space was actually a thing. As soon as my first word was complete and I got the blank alternative I was like "oooh, you're not supposed to put them in order?" and I looked at the blocks I had and tried to count where that should go. I am very glad that was not the way to play this game. ;)

Even though it was very cool looking and very cozy and polished - I missed some sort of increased difficulty, because it quickly became repetitive, perhaps some sort of decrease of total score the longer you waited before you placed the block or similar would've made a lot of difference here.

Nice work!

I really enjoyed this :) Straightforward implementation.

Thank you very much for your kind words! Much appreciated :)

You're right, it was more addicting than I thought it would be when opening it lol. A bit easy though, even with the option of having a tougher font (creative to include that as an option). I'm curious why the sound is "off" as default as I almost missed turning it on. :)

All in all, cool little game. :)

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I guess me coming to this more from a Webdesigner's perspective then from a gamedev's might explain this, as usually Sounds are seeing as rather intrusive. It also doesn't help, that for enabling the audio, the user hast to perform an action. So muting the sound (which really is nothing spectacular anyway) was the sneaky way to get around that problem and also follow accessibility guidelines, where a user should only receive inputs that he chooses to. :)

I was actually considering making a game similar to this going into the jam. I was under the interpretation that for some printing presses for newspapers and books, the letters were backwards. If you alter the game to be based on that, the player will have to take a forwards-spelled sentence and reverse it on the fly. Just an idea.

Nonetheless, the game was very well polished and well-rounded. Nice job!

You are actually correct that the printplate should actually be mirrored to be transferred onto the paper. I don't really know how I missed that! My original idea was to provide the plate with a random set of letters, that he then would have to put into the correct place on the plate, however I really struggled with the ui for that case, seeing as the letters were rather small to place individually. I'll definitely keep this in mind though, in case I ever go back and polish up the game! Thanks for your kind feedback! :)

I really like the idea of the printing press as a game. I wish there was a timer or a way to just type maybe? Some sort of risk beyond losing points if you get one wrong.

Developer

Thanks for your kind words! I initially wanted to implement a more accessible way of inserting the letters, via clicking or typing the correct letters, however I unfortunately ran out of time :( I see your point on the game being to easy, maybe allowing 5 seconds for each drag to receive positive points is a bit much. I'll keep it in mind in case I ever go back polishing up the game! :)
