Love the sprites you've made, and the background art really pops. Gameplay is pretty fun, pretty good game overall.
Some personal thoughts:
- The difficulty change from level 1 to 2 is too big. Level 2 just goes on for extremely long without checkpoints, and platform placements for some reason feels more randomly placed.
- Would be nice to have a little more explanation storywise on things happening, since they just kinda happens (place getting corrupted, miko randomly gets sunglasses, etc). Some small 4 panel comic etc, or even just text if time is a constraint. Would be even better if players are able to infer from the story that the cause of the corruption was due to not getting the secret item.
- Wall jump mechanic is cool, but I don't think it works very well with the level design you have here. Most of the time I'd find myself clinging to walls when I was not trying to, and I feel that the level can do away with wall jumps in general as it is not used much either.
Thanks for making this!
Fantastic art, the sprites look adorable and I love them! And I like the idea of corrupted levels for failure, even if inverted controls is a bit harsh. (I just gave up on "directions" and just went forward after that.) The references were also really fun, I loved seeing the Fuwamoco Ambulance as the reason the road is so dangerous.
The secret items seem to be buffs for the particular level your in, so they really shouldn't be required to prevent corruption, but others have mentioned that already.
And the environments were really pretty, but the platforms didn't really stand out from the backgrounds well enough, there were a few times I made a jump and hit something unexpected, although generally it saved me. And there were a few leaps of faith directly into lava or traffic because you couldn't tell where you're landing.
Oh the horror of inverted controls... I think the condition for an uncorrupted version of the stage is asking a lot from the player indeed, from having to get all the collectable and the secret while not dying. I would rather suggest that instead of punishing them with inverted controls they would get a more difficult level instead.
With the criticism out of the way, I really thing the sprites are cute and charming, although some sizes may shift a little it could be tweak to perfection! And the platformer mechanic is quite solid with the wall grab and slide, the jumps don't feel too floaty too!
To sum it up, I really like how the game have solid controls and charming sprite, just the inverted controls and the condition for not getting them is a bit much.
Nice work on the character sprite, although Miko's size is a bit inconsistent across animations.
Nice implementation of platforming mechanics such as wall grab and jump. I also liked the secret "pockets" in the levels.
The references in the background of the stages is also a nice touch and the title screen was really well animated.
Improvement suggestions:
- I understand having the player penalized if they didn't collect all the items in a level, but doing it without dying is a bit too much. Secret or hidden items shouldn't be counted either.
- Getting all secret/hidden items and clearing the game without dying should grant a special ending, but it shouldn't be a requirement to enjoy the game normally.
- Reverse controls in a platformer is not enjoyable. If it was a temporary debuff it would be fine, but permanently is a big no.
- Some sound effects seem to play a bit late. They may need some work in the audio editor.
- The title screen doesn't scale well on an ultrawide monitor. I couldn't see the buttons to start the game. :(
I hope the team adjusts the penalty after the jam so I can play it again and experience the rest of the game. It looks like a nice and fun game but the reverse controls just killed the fun for me.
I really do like all the portraits in the background, the ambulance driving around, the faunamart. The game looks great and is full of memes. Miko's sprite art is adorable too.
Inverted controls for the entire second level is possibly the most unhinged decision you've ever made. Just why? It isn't even really explained. It just is. It is bad. Very bad.
So I ended up not finishing it, even though I do like it. I might come back later to try and beat it.
Good game.
thx for the feedback \o/, if you are able to to complete the first lv without dying and collecting all things, you can go to the normal version of the map without inverted controls(but we might make it easier to do that)
The art was really good! I really like Miko's jumping expression! I did feel like at some points it was hard to tell if the floor was solid, or just a part of the background leading me to just jump to my death. The game was fun though.
thx for the feedback, that is on our list of one of the many things we need to change /o/
I really like the references in stage 2. Adding checkpoints will really help as the platforming can be unforgiving some times. Other than that it is a fun little game.
thx for the feedback o>
The art is super cute, and adding Miko's adorable voice makes it even more enjoyable. Plus, the fact that some bugs have been fixed makes it way more fun to play. Awesome!
thx, we are glad you liked \o/
The art in this one is really nice and using the different mascots for different obstacles and stage elements is very creative. The sunglasses for miko when you get to take an extra hit is also really good. This game is really hard, and that's fine, but I think some of the difficulty spots were unfair if that makes sense. Like there's quite a few places where you just have to take a leap of faith where you have to trust that there is ground underneath you even though you can't see it. This is especially annoying when the drop makes you get hit by an enemy you can't see. It also makes it so sometimes if there was a moving platform that was off screen but coming towards me, I would just jump because I thought there was ground there and die. But I think all you need to do to fix that is zoom the camera out a bit (and maybe make Miko a bit faster but that's personal preference lol).
I did really like how stage 2 has two different versions based on how well you did on stage 1. That was really neat. I just didn't like how the controls inverted but the idea of messing with the player's controls to show corruption is neat. Its a very challenging platformer with cute sprites. Good job!
thx for the feedback, i will pass the sugestions foward to see what we can do about that \o\
V3 with even more bug fixes, most if not all have been fixed i think
Great work! The game is really challenging and kept my attention trying to find the 2 endings. The idea of changing the buttons when there is corruption is incredible.
The music and drawings are also incredible.
I loved it! Very creative, congratulations to the group.
thx 👍👍
new version2 with bug fixes
The intro in this game is really cute, I restarted a few times just to watch it again! The sprites are well done, and I love the "bau bau" ambulance in stage 2.
I did encounter a few issues: Miko often gets stuck on ledges or walls, and the character doesn’t move in sync with the moving platforms (caught me off-guard first time). In stage 2, Miko becomes unable to climb back up after falling off in certain areas. When I returned to the main menu after this bug, and then replayed stage 1, the collectible count didn’t reset, so I briefly had 26/14 collections.
Overall, it’s a challenging platform game with adorable sprites. Great job!
P.S. I still have no idea where the last collectible in stage 1 is hiding—stuck at 13/14!
we just checked that out, its a bug, we are planning to correct that
thx for the feedback /o/
Fun game but a bit too hard!
Protip: Turn your keyboard upsidedown when you got in the purple/corruption stages. (EDIT)
TOP!
Edit: really fun platformer. the jumping challenges were fun. But really unforgiving haha.
I also appreciate those effects you put it for the skull and small explosion. Really well done effects. And the miko sprite was cute!
[Solved] Wasn't able to open the rar. Not sure if its an issue just for me. will delete this comment when i try again later.
to open the .rar you need winrar, incase you are using some other unzipper or the native from windows
