  • "Main Menu" had a wonderfully high-flying quality that I thought was really nicely complimented by the use of percussion-- particularly snare-- just a smile on my face from beginning to end. I appreciate the focus on legible melodic content as well (true throughout the entirety of this entry, really). I very much appreciate the effort put into having a live version of "Shrinking World" in your submission. The performance here really adds to the whole, and I thought it was rendered with just the right amount of expressive playing. Thank you so much for this! Sometimes I felt that the tracks ended a bit abruptly, which is to say that I was enjoying them quite a bit and would like to hear some of them developed even more-- "Cat Chase" and "Beyond the Door" in particular felt like the story was just a tad cut off from a structural point of view, and that there was more to say with the material you had presented. Overall, I was very impressed with the material here. Very nice work!

Description
Hi everyone this is our submission for OST Composing Jam #7. The theme of the competition was "Inside My World". Our biggest hurdle was finishing up the "Shrinking World" theme since it was last minute we had to play it live. We ended up using the theme as the name for our soundtrack. If you're interested, we made a little story below that goes with the whole soundtrack. Anyways I hope everyone can take the time to listen to our soundtrack we put a lot of work into it! Enjoy!

Story
Inside My World:

In a nice cozy town in the middle of summer, a little girl named Bell discovers a mysterious door leading to a magical world full of imagination. This is her story.

Cat Chase:

One summer day while playing outside Bell notices a little cat. She calls the cat over, but the cat just stands there looking confused. As Bell starts to walk over to him the cat runs off. Bell wanting to play with the cat chases after it, running through streets, yards, and even by the beach just to catch the cat.

Beyond the Door:

After chasing the cat for so long Bell gets lost in an alleyway somewhere in the middle of town. While Bell looks around trying to find the way back home she sees bubbles, water, and even floating golden fish coming from around the corner. Bell rushes over to see where all of it is coming from. When she turns the corner she finds herself in front of a door leading to a magical world. Filled with curiosity she slowly enters the door. Bell finds so many magical things in this world like floating bubbles, a magical sea floor golden and brimming with joy, and even talking fish that swim in the air. She starts playing with the fish and running around realizing that anything she wants can come to life inside this world.

Fish Lullaby:

After hours of playing with the talking fish, she lays down on the golden sea floor to take a nap. While she naps the fish play her a beautiful little lullaby.

The shrinking world:

Bell wakes up suddenly because of a nightmare and realizes she can't find the way back to her world. Since she can't find the door she starts feeling afraid and the world starts shrinking around her, the bubbles start to pop, the talking fish start to disappear, and even the golden sea floor starts to become dim. She's scared and running everywhere trying to find a way out.

A Way Out:

Right when everything was about to disappear she finally saw it, it was the door. She starts to run towards it and a sense of relief fills the world around her. She hears her mom calling out to her wondering where she ran off to, saying "Bell dinners ready, where are you". The world instantly expands with bubbles, golden light, and even the talking fish that had disappeared. As she walked towards the door wanting to show her mom this new world the fish waved and said "Come back soon, we'll miss you" With a final step she walked out the door and fell onto her mom who was waiting for her in the alleyway.

Inside My World (Credits):

Bell's mom asked in a flustered state "Where have you been your food is getting cold". Bell grabbed her mom's arm saying "Mom, Mom look at this I went through this door and..." but when she turned around to look at the door it wasn't there, it had disappeared without a trace. There were no more fish, no more bubbles, and even the water that covered the alleyway was gone. Her mom said "What are you talking about silly, what door." Bell pointed at where the door was and said, "It was just right here I promise". Bell explained everything to her mom but she just thought that it was Bell's imagination. Then after getting up off the ground they both walked back home and began to eat dinner. The little girl never saw that door again but she always referred to it as "Her little world".

How does it fit the theme?
We built a story around the girl and the magical world she finds. I think that the story we made matches perfectly with both themes.

Man, this soundtrack was just magical. Each song was such a treat to the ears, and had such wonder and beauty to it! It’s just stunning, and feels like it could easily be in a movie. You’ve utilized so many instruments to create such a stunning soundtrack, and I can’t wait to see what you make next! One of my favorites to listen to so far! (Also it kind of reminds me of “Finding Nemo”)

Developer

This comment made my morning thank you! We always try to make something sound magical in our music so thank you! Also thanks for listening to our OST it means a lot!!!!!

The main menu theme sucked me in almost immediately cos it just goes so hard, and every subsequent track just gets even better. Your tracks are so magical and dreamy. Amazing, one of my favourite submissions I've listened so far!

Developer

Thank you we tried to make the main menu really hook people in so I'm glad it worked!!!

Developer

I love beyond the door.
Very good orchestration and harmony in your composition.
Nice work at all.

Developer

Thank you for listening to our OST!!!

Submitted(+2)

Sounds fantastic! I love the harmonies that emerged in your compositions, very layered and complex sounding. You also varied textures in an effective and pleasant way, especially in Fish Lullaby. Overall, it tkaes the play/listener on a magical journey, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks the goal with all of our OSTs is to take the listener on a journey so I'm glad it did that for you!!!

Submitted(+2)

Surely one of the best I've heard in this competition! After all, if I'm not mistaken, you are the winners of the last Crunchtime.

Developer(+1)

That means a lot us and we did win the last Crunchtime but this is a way bigger competition so it's definitely been a challenge! Thanks taking the time to listen to the whole OST!!!!

Submitted(+2)

Woah the quality is amazing! Got embarked on the journey immediately with the opening !

There are some very cool motions in the melodies you developped on the first two tracks.

The beginning of Beyond the Door is truly magical, so well crafted, i love it!

The 5 meter based lullaby give it a floating feel, very calming and cozy. That's a creative way to convey the atmosphère of that moment in the story :)

Shrinking World started soft and tender. But then I got the feeling that everything was escaping in front of Bell's eyes... nice turning point in the ost.

I could feel the mixed feeling of Bell in a Way Out. She's happy she could find a way back to her home but she's sad about leaving the fantastic world she discovered, and not being able to share it with her mom.

Nice piano ending to conclude this Ost!

My favorites are the Menu Title and Beyond the Door !

Congratulations for acheiving this quality soundtrack :D

Developer

I'm glad that you understood the emotions we were trying to portray in the music. Thanks for listening to the whole OST it means a lot!!!!

Amazing work! So much variety in orchestration and playmode, loved it!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you loved it we tried giving it a bit more variety compared to our last soundtrack Azure Sky, so I'm happy you said that!

Really great soundtrack (and certainly not a letdown compared to last time) !
The instrumentation and composition are engaging and dynamic throughout the different tracks, which provide a very pleasant listening experience (I liked A Way Out a lot, although the quality is quite homogeneous across the different tracks).
Also the story you've written on your project's page is very nice (a bit hard to decipher with the white text on the bright yellow background though, maybe switch the yellow with the orange from the outline of the title ?).
Anyway great work and congrats !

Developer(+1)

Thank you, we as much time as we could into it so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Wow! You are back! This may be weird, but I actually have a special connection with your music. Your pieces from one of the previous jams was one of the first I listened to before deciding to join a composing jam (this is my first), so I actually recognized the theme you used in your main menu track from one of your previous submissions! You did great on that variation!

Your composition from when you placed first was what I kept in mind when composing for this jam. It's no stretch to say you definitely influenced what I submitted!

Anyway, this was another masterpiece, and I hope to see you win again!

Developer(+2)

It feels really good to know that people are basing their music on what we've made previously. I'm glad you enjoy listening to our music it really does mean a lot especially since we put a lot of hard work into our tracks!!!

Submitted(+2)

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I definitely love the main menu theme the most because of the addition of water and bubbles. It played so well with how dynamic your sounds were later on in the track. IT ALSO REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF OCTOPATH especially when it starts to build up. My second favorite would be the Credits because I just love the melody. Amazing quality and work throughout. You mentioned it being rushed towards the end but from my perspective, the quality was still maintained until the end.

I definitely want to listen more of all of your works!

Developer(+1)

Thanks we base a lot of our music on Octopaths soundtrack so I'm glad it reminded you of it. Thanks again for listening!!!!

Submitted(+2)

Really pretty melodic lines and harmonies throughout!  Some of the pieces sound like they could be the main track in a Pixar short. :)  My favorite has to be A Way Out

Developer

Thank you soo much we put a lot of work into it!

Submitted(+2)

Really nice overall, strong motif development and instrumentation. Strong mixing, although some instruments did feel a step too loud at points.

Developer

That's fair we were rushing in the last hour since we didn't have everything done. I'm glad you enjoyed it though thanks for listening to our OST!

Submitted (2 edits) (+2)

This is just stunning. I'm honestly speechless (in a good way). you really know how to make use of leitmotifs write and emotional music

Developer

Thank you, we put a heavy focus on motifs this time so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+2)

Very very nice stuff, super polished!!!

Developer

I appreciate that thanks! We tried polishing it the best we could up to the last minute.

Submitted(+2)

Sounds really polished, awesome work on this!!  Really like how varied the orchestrations are. "A Way Out" is also standout for me, and I like how expansive you get the orchestra to go. Yall did a great job getting the theme to work across the different instruments.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! It was a bit of a challenge at first trying to make the motif go between different instruments without it getting too bland, so I'm glad it turned out well enough for people to enjoy! Thanks again for listening to our OST!!!

Submitted(+2)

This OST is really reminiscent of the games I grew up playing in the early 2000s, I think it’s the way you can tell ever so slightly that the instruments are high-quality MIDI VSTs, they just have that really nostalgic quality for me. The music really does a good job at conveying the scenes you folks outline in your track descriptions. Overall the material is really lovely and delicate, but I found the tracks are blending together a bit in my mind when I try and think back on them. You definitely achieved a cohesive vibe throughout the soundtrack—both with the orchestration and the very clear use of that (scale degree) 1–7–1–5 motif—but I would’ve liked to have seen more differentiation amongst the individual tracks. Again, fantastic orchestration, these are very well-composed, beuatiful pieces from a technical standpoint!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I can see what you mean when it comes to a lot of the tracks being similar. For us, it was partially due to the fact of trying to keep everything sounding like it's from the same OST and also because of time constraints. I'm glad you enjoyed it though thanks for listening!

Submitted(+2)

Nicely done! It really took me on a journey... love the main menu theme. :) Really a lot of great music for such a short time!

Developer

Thank you we tried our best to get quality and quantity so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+2)

This is beautiful. I gotta say my favorite track was "A Way Out" but each track was nicely done.

Developer

Thanks, I loved your tracks too they're solid stuff especially since you said you're new!
