Description
Hi! This is my submission for ost composing game jam #7

The name of my imaginary game is Mindful Matters.

I imagine an exploration heavy game, with light combat.

The narrative follows a young girl who wrestles with mental health issues, and seeks the help of a magical therapist. Together, with the help of a fantastical helmet, they enter the girls mind. Inside, they travel through the wonders of her brain and fight off her issues.

Track 1: Opening titles: this plays during main menu, and when you first boot up the game. I want to set the scene with it, and emphesise that despite the sad narrative, this is supposed to be a hopeful game.

Track 2: Through the looking glass: The track plays after the magical therapist begins her work, by putting special helmet on the girl. She sees all her memories, the good and the bad flash before her. Then suddenly the device kicks in, and after a short pause transports them into the dream realm, signified by the etherial music.

Track 3: Neural highways: This is one of the areas she explores, the connective highways between other areas. I wanted it to feel happy as a kind of respite. I wanted to include at least one track that wasn't "cutscene music", this is a game soundtrack jam after all.

Track 4: The outer world: After reaching the centre of her mind, called the "Perception Peninsula" they fight off the final enemy, insecurity, and through her real eyes, she sees the outer world. She sees once again her memories, this time floating in the water around the peninsula, but she ignores them and leaves the dream world. This is signified by the opening title music playing at the end.

Thank you for listening through it : ]

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
It is set in the magical world of the mind, with a little girl as the protagonist. I tried making the soundtrack etherial and thoughtful.

I Like how Opening Titles and The Outside World complement each other, nice work!

You've indeed done an ethereal soundtrack that fit the theme, nice done!

Avatar the last airbender notes spotted! I think it was your motif too! those descending 4 notes repeating on piano.

All in all a nice OST but I think it was a little too quiet and took too long to get started with some of the songs having too long of a fade in.

Good story telling, decent tracks, I just think its missing some body to each tracks to make the arrangement more "full". You can also work on the mix and make it a bit louder by adding some  dynamics and look what are you missing, low end, mid , high end and use appropriate instrument to balance it before even starting to mix with plugins.. You got some nice ideas I think you just need to fill  the gap around it. Good job !

"...-Mind, this is a very scary place. Are you really sure you want to do this?

- I'm sure!

- I can't give you any better advice than...

- A therapist? Again? You've been taking me to see him all my life. Nothing worked. I was afraid of my dreams, and I continue to be afraid of them...

- Don't be afraid. We have a better option this time. Have you heard about McLaggen?

- Who?

- McLaggen. An outstanding specialist in his field. He is young, ambitious and, most importantly, his job is not too expensive. Only 20 pounds...

- How much?

- It doesn't matter. The most important thing is that you will be healthy..."

Opening Titles:

"...An amazing shop filled with drugs and medicines that you definitely won't find among amateurs. Even the alcohol on the shelves was not harmful, but on the contrary, it cured alcoholism. According to him, McLaggen was a good specialist in the treatment of sick people. There was an office in the next room, next to it was the "operating room"..."

Through The Looking Glass:

"...- Are you sure this will work?

- I guarantee a complete cure. You will be happy and healthy. Like before

- I've never been healthy before...

- So you'll be healthy like never before! So, wait a second, I'll plug in the tubes and..."

Neural Highways:
"...In fact, no one has ever been able to understand how a pathetic self-taught professor, who was ignominiously kicked out of Oxford University, became the most mysterious doctor in the history of Britain. His methods were mysterious and inexplicable to a mere mortal. Some even said that he possessed black magic, and the secrets of magic, which, according to conspiracy theorists, he stole from the most distant archives of Oxford..."

The Outside World:

"...-Do you hear the clock?

- Y-Yes...

- Okay, this means that either you are conscious now, or there are a lot of wall clocks in your dreams

- Why not a big watch? Well, the ones that are on the ground?

- Yeah! So she's conscious! Then look at this picture on the monitor

McLaggen pointed to an unusual cardiogram. The strip fluctuated up and down, slowly descending lower and lower

- What does this mean?

- This means that the preparation is working!

- How? Am I healthy?

- Almost. The only thing left for you is to eat some chocolate, sleep and...

- How did you do it?

- Science!

- Science has not helped me before...

- Heh... My science is different from "Ordinary Science". Unlike the abstruse and bearded professors who broadcast strange speeches from the higher department of the university, I believe in what they do not believe

- Magic?

- Yes"

Since Hans Zimmer, I cannot hear a clock with shivering. So you get automatically a good rating lol.

More seriously the OST was really solid, but The Outside World was outstanding for me. Beautiful choice for the melody, the pads and violins work well together, nothing to say other than good work!

the different ideas for leitmotifs are amazing, from the ticking clock for your metronome in some songs and the descending arps in the other songs which gives each song in your soundtrack a connection to each other, like the final song being like the 3rd song but slowed down to achieve the mellow atmosphere. Nueral Highways has got to be one of my favorite songs in your soundtrack

Developer

Thank you! I tried to really connect all of them with similar sounds and ideas, but still keep them somewhat different.

A lot of clever ideas in these. Orchestration is solid and each of the arrangements are well done. My favorite of the bunch is The Outside World - the progression in this one is nice; has me feeling pensive. The ticking clock acting as a pseudo-metronome is genius and a great way to paint a picture within a picture - the music had me feeling contemplative, but that beat kept me aware of what was going on around me.

Honorable mention to the synth melodies in Neural Highways - it made for a nice change of voicing. Only thing I think I could suggest is having some more percussive elements scattered throughout - doesn't need to be drum lines or anything of the sort, but something akin to the ticking that gives a rhythm here and there. Great work all in all, these were a fun listen and it all fits thematically. :)

Thank you!

I was aproud of the ticking clock motif. You're probably right about the percussion though, the first three all have percussion to some degree, but maybe there should be something more prominent.

I made everything on my synth, and it was a bit clunky to make the percussion on it. I'll try MIDI next time.

Far from a detraction on the piece - something to consider in the future is all. Something as simple as a gated pad or a rhythmic sequence using some pitch env mods to add a little extra movement and swing. Kudos for making it all on a synth, I admire the dedication in that regard. Came out well in the end!

So great! I think you really nailed the story you were going for with the music, I can totally see the story when I close my eyes :D

I really liked how well you represented the neural highways with the 4-note melodic pattern!

Also the timbral coherence is well appreciated throughout the entire ost.

Congratulations!

Developer

Hi! Thank you so much. It may just be me, but I've never heard of the phrase "timbral coherence". What does it mean?

Submitted

I'm a Spanish speaker, maybe I didn't explain myself well. By timbral I meant "timbre" which means the same types of sounds throughout the OST.

Developer

ah thanks! : )

Very peaceful and well made. Through the Looking Glass has some action. Appreciated the arps all throughout the collection, they really gave that imagination/surreal vibe. Nice work!

Nice work! I really like the pleasant mood with the overlaying melodies. Well done.
