  • The choice of textures here is definitely interesting, and incorporating non-musical elements (like the speaking) definitely lends this submission a very unique feeling! I appreciated that you felt the need to mix it up frequently while not departing too far from your overall style and tone. Along those lines, I would encourage you to think about structure a little more on a per-track basis. What story does each one tell? At times I felt that you were leading me in a particular direction and then choosing to move in a new one that felt like it didn’t “fit”. You seem like you have a really unique perspective from the perspective of tone and the sonic palette, but it needs to move from point A to point B a little bit more sensibly and in a way that your audience can follow somewhat more easily I think. I will confess that I find the connection to the theme to be the biggest weakness of the submission insofar as the overall tone that it achieves is, in my mind, seems only tenuously connected to the theme. While I appreciate the attempt to connect it to the theme in the description, I just can’t get away from the overall more personal feel of "inside my world" and the more whimsical feel of the image, which I think this struggles to realistically meet. In the future, I think it would be better to fit your submissions to the theme rather than trying to let your statement fit the theme to your music, if that makes any sense. Overall it seems to me like you have some cool ideas about incorporating really neat electronic textures and I think your grasp on how the ambient feelings of your music affect the listener are strong (the described setting for your music does feel as if it matches the tone you are setting in the music). Additionally, I really appreciate that you have a lot of ideas to share— there’s not a lot of dwelling on one idea for too long. I think the biggest challenge for this entry is just that it is fairly incongruent with the theme, as the chosen style and tone are quite a departure from what I’m getting from both the text and the image prompts. I look forward to hearing you do more cool stuff in the future with electronic textures!

Description
A set of songs for an FPS game, made specifically for OST Composing Jam #7

Style: relatively old first-person shooter

You are a soldier whose world is on the verge of destruction by a race of mutants who have arrived from a recently destroyed world. You were sent through the portal with the goal of destroying “Patient Zero” - the child who was the first to be infected with the virus, and which gives rise to mutants and monsters.
But will you be able to destroy patient zero? And will this stop the takeover of your home planet?
...and who started the destruction of the worlds?

The genre... is changing.
Main emphasis on rock and industrial
I tried to make it in the style of old shooter soundtracks

My main inspirations:
Quake (Thanks to Trent Reznor!), Half Life, Doom and other shooters)

1 - Intro. Nothing interesting
2 - Abandoned Village
3 - OST caves
4 - Sewers
5 - Small battle theme in the sewers
6 - Sewer Boss - A huge underwater snake that makes strange noises
7 - Intro to the Industrial zone. Ride on a small train near the factories
8 - Theme of clashes on factory premises
9 - Theme "roofs". Climbing to the top of scaffolding and giant industrial buildings
10 - The boss is a huge mutant raven. Queen's "child"
11 - Respite
12 - Chase. The hero runs away from a revived crow through the city's ports
13 - Subway theme. Lights are turning off everywhere
14 - Relaxing in the Queen's Archives
15 - Battle of the Queen's Archives, where freezing devices are everywhere
16 - The theme of the battle in the abandoned temple
17 - The hero makes his way to the foot of the main techno-temple
18 - Battles inside the Techno Temple
19 - Final boss - The girl who was infected with the virus and gained control over the mutants
20 - Monologue from the unknown "New King"

Message from the artist
Thank you all so much for your comments and criticism! Being new to music and with little experience (only ~4 months), I'm very happy with your feedback! I'll take any advice. Thank you all!
Oh... yes... of course...
Be happy!

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
My interpretation is this:
The main character went inside a world where there is a “patient zero” on a planet recently plunged into chaos. “Patient Zero” is a little girl who was the first to be infected with a virus that turns living organisms into aggressive mutants. But these mutants have a collective mind! And they all obey the very first infected - a little girl
“Inside my world” means the invasion of the protagonist, a soldier, into an alien world in order to destroy the “zero patient” before the armies of mutants destroy the protagonist’s home world.

Interpretation of the picture: the first locations are caves and sewers. The little girl is the main antagonist. The figure next to the girl is a mysterious man who accompanies the main character and speaks his monologue at the very end of the game

You're crazy for doing all this in a week.

I'm a big fan of the era you're going for and the original Quake Soundtrack & NIN in general so I was pretty excited to check this out after reading the description. I think you've completely nailed that sound whilst also providing your own take on it that feels unique and not just an imitation.

Developer

Thank you! As a NIN fan, I am very happy about your feedback!

I wish I had more time to cover each track one by one, cause there is a lot here, but I am trying my best to listen to as many submissions as possible, I admit I skimmed through it but tried giving each track a minute or two to listen. It for sure gives me that late 90s early 2000s PC FPS games. If I have more time I will try and give each track some feedback but from what I heard it all sounded great with the experimental sounds!

Crazy amount of work must have gone into this! 20 full-length tracks is insane.

Lots of good variety in them too, from really haunting ambience like Beginning of Salvation to some really groovy tunes found in the boss themes

Submitted(+1)

Beginning Of Salvation: Cool vocals. This really sets the tone for the game.

Horrible Village (Ambient): An effective ambience befitting of the track name.

Caves (Ambient): Love the bubbly sounds/water dripping. Really adds to the cave atmosphere.

Sewers (Ambient): Similar vibe to the previous track at first, but then more elements come in later. Love the screaming like SFX at the end.

Rocks And Stalagmites: That guitar! Cool battle theme.

Underwater Serpent (Boss Theme): Hell yeah acid bass! This is a tough boss theme.

Train: Sound at the beginning is reminiscent of distorted train noises to me.

Among The Boxes: Love the industrial sounds.

Raising The Crow's Nest: Love the name of this track. More of the good industrial sounds and now some organ.

National Emblem (Boss Theme): The sounds here are so cool. Really could hear this in an old FPS.

False Rest: Love how this theme still keeps you on edge despite being relatively calm compared to the rest.

Cat And Mouse: More acid bass. Solid chase vibes.

Metro In The City: I remember hearing this one in Discord! So much cool sfx ("Hello Bastard").

Rest Zone: A break from the intense stuff while still having a sense of foreboding. Love it.

Queen's Archives: Very cool textures here.

Full Metal Temple: Oh that beat is hot! This is so cool. Awesome synth and guitar mix.

Green Stage: The percussion this opens up with is so good. I loved the vocal sfx use here.

Chaotic Stage: Love the breakbeat. Love how crazy it sounds towards the end.

Patient Zero (Boss Theme): Yo this is hard! Great basses, crazy lead (almost sounds like its screaming lol). Man I love this so much. This is my favorite track here. Brilliant SFX.

Monologue: I love the atmosphere here. I love the feel of the monologue but I wish I could more clearly hear what was being said lol.

What a journey. Great work!

Thank you very much for commenting on each track!

Okay, I think I’m going to have nightmares after listening to this one..!

To start, what a creative idea! You took this in a direction I and most of the other people in this competition probably wouldn’t have even dreamed of! The story conveyed through the tracks feels very thought out as well.

I love the inclusion of almost inhuman, retro sounding effects mixed in with the rest of the songs. Speaking of songs, the boss fight music, ABSOLUTELY SLAPS. I would jam to this music all day if I could! The ambient and area themes also do an amazing job at conveying separate tones of areas, while still keeping the underlying mood of the game in mind.

This OST is also MASSIVE! Not only are there 20 songs, but most of them are in the range of 3-5 minutes, as opposed to my OST, where most of my songs are only around 30 seconds to a minute! Amazing work with this soundtrack, It is absolutely terrifyingly terrific.

Echoing what a couple of others have said - some of these really do give off a Resident Evil kind of vibe, particularly 4 (which came to mind upon seeing the album artwork).

Some really cool experimental pieces in here - Sewers immediately stood out as being heavy on the eerie atmosphere with sound design taking to the forefront to really set the scene. It actually loosely reminds me of some of the more ambient and experimental stuff heard on some of the Tekken soundtracks (á la Neonatal from T4).

My favorites of the bunch are probably the three Boss Themes - especially Underwater Serpent and National Emblem. The acid bass in Underwater Serpent is dope, and the beat reminds me of something fresh out of the 90s. Same can be said for National Emblem - the distorted synth kicking in and weaving between the kicks in the beat is really cool. The tempo modulation as it progresses is a nice touch to drive a sense of urgency.

Great submission all in all - a lot of cool ideas here, and kudos for producing such a sheer amount of varied works.

I don’t know how you managed to produce so much music! But your work is great and your world is so creepy haha

Developer

Heh... Thanks!

Your tracks really capture the thriller/horror fps gaming experience, it sent me the chills, if that's any indication of how good the immersion is. Cool work!

Some great sonic experiments here! Great rhythms and ambience, love variability of tracks. Cool industrial atmosphere!

I've been looking forward to seeing the full soundtrack after hearing some of your snippets on devlog!
This is fantastic, each song would perfectly fit the scenario you picked for a game. My personal favorite was "Metro In The City" the quality of that one is *chef's kiss*

I love the synthy sound of these songs!

I could feel the feel of a solid Doom type FPS song.

I also love the cheesy guitar, or something like that.

As a soundtrack track, 20 songs is a very good size! It was worth listening to! Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

some really quality ambient tracks here! this is probably the most experiemental submission i've rated yet, pretty sick all in all.

Submitted(+1)

When is the game released?

I want it in my library as quickly as possible because this music is awesome!

I am very impressed by the quantity and QUALITY of tracks you have been able to produce for the jam.

I really liked the choice of instruments in Rest Zone, it contrasts very well with the other tracks.

Submitted(+1)

So many cool tracks here! I can totally see this being in a 90s FPS, you've nailed that aesthetic perfectly. I especially love the boss themes, they slap! Nice work!

Submitted(+1)

This is such a unique take on the theme, and a solid OST. Almost a "Luc Ferrari meets Skrillex" vibe.

Submitted(+1)

Woah, this is one of the larger submissions! This soundscape captures that atmosphere of survival thriller/horror games pretty well with the aggressive synths and haunting sounds. The world you described feels like mix of resident evil and fallout which I find interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Submitted(+1)

im completely amazed by this submission! the fact that you got this much music done is soooo impressive! and they slap too! impressed as all hell here, great job!

Submitted(+1)

This is so cool! I could easily picture this in the game you described. I love this style its so raw and gnarly and heavy, it reminds me a lot The Eternal Castle Remastered OST. Really cool stuff and you made so much it's very impressive! Great work! Did you sleep at all this week?

Developer

Thanks! I slept very little...)

Submitted(+1)

Amazing. It's not even remotely close to what I usually listen to, but I loved every moment of it! Some of my favorites were 'Underwater Serpent', 'Cat and Mouse', and all of the tracks taking place in the last Techno Temple. The entire OST was super atmospheric and excellently done, great job!

Submitted(+1)

That's impressive AF, you took a niche and you just destroyed any concurence you could have in it, by the quantity AND the quality of what you've produced. I learned to use a mouse by playing Quake multi, so everything just go right to my heart. Massive personality in this submission

My favorite is Underwater Serpent !

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
