Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Play as the last Black Rook in the world defending the ruins from white pieces in this strategic chess-based roguelike.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
In chess, you take/defeat other pieces by simply occupying their tiles. “You are the Weapon” describes how your rook character can take other pieces by simply moving into them without using any other items.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The engine used to program Rook's Last Stand was the popular kid's coding website Scratch, and it matches the quality of other jam games using simplistic block code behind the scenes. This was done as a proof of concept, and for fun :)

Really cool idea, and well implemented... Good luck with the jam!

Developer

Thank you 😄

Such a unique and creative concept, immediately makes you wonder why there's never been a turn-based chess-themed roguelike before?! The UI is super clean, the music is so funky and upbeat - I literally have nothing but praise.
Well done on making such a tight, well-designed game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for all of the praise! :) There is actually one other chess turn -based roguelike this was heavily inspired by, check my GDD

Shotgun King looks awesome, will check it out, thanks for the rec! JOTPK is an all-time classic too, solid choices of inspo.

Plays really well, something weird makes my framerate tank horrible so it was a bit uncomfortable to play but super fun overall, got a few waves past the final wave, the chain after kill is insanely strong.

My only tiny complaint is it's hard to differentiate pieces when they line up vertically and the tooltip for mousing over the tile didn't seem to be accurate, or at least was unintuitive for where I was mousing over.

Had lots of fun, great game

Unfortunately it targets the backmost piece you're hovering over for info which I could fix but it's too late now. Thanks for playing :>

Based choice of game engine

Developer

Fancy seeing you here, haha :) Didn't know you were doing this jam

Loved it!

Such a cool idea for a game! A full game of this seems would be really neat!

Great work!

Submitted(+1)

Very cool idea, well done! I think it could be turned into a Steam game that people would love :)

Developer(+1)

I've never released anything on steam but who knows maybe if it does well 😅

Submitted(+1)

Very cool mechanic, really have to think about your moves

Developer

Thanks :)

Developer

Thank you so much :>

Developer

Thanks a bunch! :D

This is a very interesting take on the theme that was given. I really like that i gives the player a familiar topic and changes into something that is interesting and very fun

Developer

Thank you! :]

A very cool idea of a game with a nice art style, I really like the defeat animation of the rook crumbling. Good Job!

Developer

Thank you so much! :D

Submitted(+1)

Very fun game! I dig the art style and the upgrades are fun to play with!

Developer

Thank you :)

This was really fun! An interesting switch to chess while being a cool "Lone wolf" trying to survive. I wonder if this is how Noble 6 felt like. I would absolutely find myself playing for longer. P.S. Never have I been more afraid of women than the moment I saw seven queens approaching me.

Developer(+1)

LMAO, thank you so much for playing :D

Developer

This made me chuckle. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this. I love it when well known game mechanics are mashed together like this.

Developer

Thank you so much :^)

Nice concept and visuals look good too! Maybe add some time/ move constraints. I tended to simply dodge enemies until an opening for attacking presented itself. Also, the camera movement gave me a bit of a headache.

Developer(+1)

Having time limits is an interesting idea we hadn't considered! Thanks for letting us know about the camera movement, I made it smoother and slower <3

A Certain number of moves, or, give the player objectives they need to stop enemies from destroying. This could be interesting giving each enemy piece a goal of either seeking out the player, or one of the objectives the player needs to defend.

Developer(+1)

This was actually my first idea! I had to scrap it unfortunately because of scope creep issues and failure to imagine the final product. The enemies actually have a hard-coded aggressiveness value that prioritizes the rook more than the center, but in the final version every enemy has it set to maximum so it ignores the center and moves towards you always

Submitted(+1)

Awesome job, i love a good chess game. I think this has some potential!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! It's touch but I like the concept. Wish there was a play again button after I die.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for the feedback! A retry button has been added to the next version that releases a little later today. :)

I think this is a great game, so far the one that feels the most fun to play so far! great game.

Submitted(+1)

Very well done proof-of-concept! I love the aesthetics, simple yet very pleasing to the eye. This could probably expanded a lot too, can see so many routes to go with it~ Jolly good work in general!

Also interesting that before I make it full-screen, it's all blurry for a bit, but once I go back from full-screen it's all fine

Developer

There's a little resolution bug right now but that should hopefully be fixed before the Jam ends :)
