  • Pretty neat, took me many tries to get the browser version to run. but when it did it was nice enough. recommendations: more levels, more weapons, maybe some movement abilities, really flesh it out.
  • Not bad! I enjoyed the art, animations, the music, and gameplay was ok up until the boss battle. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to defeat Big Mayo. He just absolutely would not die no matter what I did. I eventually gave up. I would have also liked to have seen an explanation of the player's goal in the Tutorial (T). I had jumped straight into your game before reading your itch.io page/game document, and was really confused for a while as to what I was supposed to do, and why none of the enemies would die lol! A simple starting black-screen with white text telling the main story, and the player's goal would have remedied this. The game also had a strange situation where if I had 2 enemies firing at me at once, the screen would shake almost uncontrollably. Other than that, not too bad. Was simplistic, and straight to the point. Really enjoyed the boss song! Thanks for the entry!

Did you include your Game Design Document in your downloadable files?
yes

Tell us about your game!
MAYO RIOT is a prototype for a fast paced and silly story based top-down shooter, based on the mechanic of spreading mayo over the city to take down Big Mayo's monopoly on mayo.
It is inspired by Splatoon, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, and Knuckle Sandwich.

Did you remember to include your Game Design Document?
yes

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
yes

Extra Notes
Thanks so much for hosting the jam!

even though i had not much free time with work and school to work on it, im really proud of the work i have done, and its all because of the motivation this jam has given me.

I can say for sure that i have improved so much over these two weeks, my productivity is now at least 3x what it was.

HUGE thanks again to Thor and the whole pirate software community.

Fun game based around mayo. lol 10/10

I definitely feel the Turnip boy influence! This game feels really good, yet is hard to master. I also like how you make the buildings fade away when you get behind them, a great solution to the problem!

Submitted

Very solid shooter, made me learn that reloading when you still have mayammo left might not be a great idea :D

No bugs encountered more than the enemies hiding behind buildings as you already know.
Solid prototype with well made graphics ! Keep it up !

Developer

Mayammo lol

Glad you enjoyed it!

Solid top down shooter controls! I think the spread on the ground was a nice touch but would have loved to see it add a mechanic to the game. I really liked the boss fight, well done!

Developer

Thanks!

It Technically does have mechanics, it adds to the mayo meter a bit when u spread it, but yes i wish i had more time to add more functionality such as slowing down enemies, etc.

When I first started the game--upon hearing the whispers, I smiled. It sounds super good and the "Press any key to RIOT" looks super good!
When I first get into the game, the game freezes (I think its because of red guy spawning particles) but from all the comments I can see that you already knew about this. But it only freezes when the effect were made but then played like normal.
I didn't...get to experience the story of the game while playing it--I only knew what its about only after the game ended and from reading the store page. I didn't even know that we are shooting mayo(i didn't connect that the title of the game had mayo in it) until I accidentally press T (yes, I went back to the starting zone and saw the T again, so its just the freeze and the enemy shooting forced me to go down into the middle area)
The gunplay....feels normal. I had played some games that are similar to this, so it doesn't really catch my attention.

Its a solid straightforward game with nice music and good consistent graphics :checkmark:

Thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately, the story is not as developed in game as I hoped it would be. I should have added more story mechanics such as dialogue, lor collectables, etc.

As for the gunplay, the mayo spreading was intended to have more implementation and gameplay mechanics, such as mayo slowing down enemies.

Again, thanks for the honest feedback, and I will definitely focus on those areas in further development of this project.

Loved the game I hope you add more content and build up on this. I WANNA SEE MORE MAYO

Developer

bet

will do

mayo forever

Submitted

the controls feel smooth, and the shooting effects are great, I had some frame drops the first time enemies spawned, besides that, this is a short but great game, good job.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

I think i know what is causing the lag now, so in the future ill make sure to fix that.

Submitted

This was so sick! The whole vibe was awesome I would love to see this turned into a full game with some more mayo-based abilities! Being able to go behind walls was a bit weird to me, although it looked awesome, just because of how the shooting worked, it made it feel like you had to get way too close to the enemies to shoot them if they were hiding. I think the major web performance errors come from the particles, if you’re using gpu particles, browsers don’t like them very much (my game has the same problem). Overall it was a really fun game, I’ll definitely be coming back if you add more post jam. Amazing job, keep it up!

Developer

OMG THANKS SO MUCH

i had no clue why it was sometimes laggy and sometimes not

thats probably why

do CPU particles work better for browser?

Submitted

yeah I think it’s just different between browsers? I didn’t get enough time to try cpu particles, but i’d assume it’s safer across browsers

Developer

Yeah ill do some testing in the future to see if i can verify i

The cover art is incredible! Whole game is quite a fun concept with A++ puns. I did indeed have performance issues in browser and felt like some of the readability for various texts could be improved upon. Overall great game, fun experience, good humor, and amazing vibes.

Submitted

Oh forgot to add I loved the transparency effect that happened for some buildings - what a nice touch and cool transition. Was just hard to know which buildings were static and which were up a layer.

Developer

Hmmmm thats weird idk why it has performance issues...

some other people have said it runs just smoothly so i will need to look into that.

also readability will definitely be a priority in the future.

Thanks for the feedback!

Really love the art, very jealous of the logo. One small thing, when having the tutorial text open, it was hard to read some of the text depending on the background.

Expected some fun with the may that you spread out, that maybe you walk faster on mayo or the enemies walk slower (did not check if they did..?)

I can definitely see potential in this, I mean, who doesn't want to be mayo?

Developer

we all love mayo man frfr

Thanks for the feedback tho, definitely will improve the tutorial in full version, it was definitely one of the most rushed parts :(

and same with the mayo, it has very little functionality bc i didnt have enough time to add any

i didnt think of the speed factor tho will definitely add that in a full release thanks

Submitted

Amazing game and well-polished
there are some negatives but others already pointed them out

good luck

Developer(+1)

Thanks!

Submitted

Haha this was actually really fun, and super polished ! :) Manage to beat the boss at the end as well. Only a few points I'd like to make.

When enemies are hiding behind buildings, it's a bit unfair that the player can't see them :P

And same thing generally when the enemy is below you, outside the screen. Some kind of indicator where they are would be nice.

But overall well done!

Developer

oooh thanks ill keep that in mind if i develop this further.

glad u enjoyed it tho

Submitted

Solid gameplay, smooth controls, nice art style. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!

Game is fun, I think it would be better to hide the building and other decorative objects beneath your crosshair as well, not just around your character.

Developer

Not sure exactly what u mean by this

by the crosshair u mean the mouse cursor?

and i believe all the buildings are below it in the layers...

if u could clarify that would be great, thanks for providing feedback tho!

Submitted

I’m talking about the buildings on the bottom of the level that get a little bit transparent as you go behind them, that’s really neat, but, some of my enemies were behind other buildings, and they were not transparent, so, what am I saying is that it would be nice, if buildings got transparent not only when you go behind them, but also when you hover your mouse around them, because you can’t even tell the direction you are being shot from.

Developer

OH I SEE

that is actually a good idea yeah will keep that in mind!

another solution or additionally i could have the enemies have an outline through walls or smth so they cant hide.

Submitted

shesh, you made me push my english knowledge to it’s limits :DDD

Submitted

Very nice! It feels like the beginning of something very solid. I wish there were more jars of mayo laying around, or maybe a way to slurp mayo up off the ground (ew) because I'm bad at games and afraid of running out of mayo. (This is also true in real life.) Love the music, too.

Developer(+1)

yay! im glad u liked it!

i really wanna make this into a full release someday, so thanks for the feedback!

(also slurping mayo off the ground sounds really gross, but i could have an enemy that eats all ur mayo !!!!111!!!)

Submitted

Great work! The controls feel solid, the little touches of aesthetics are wonderful. I really loved the fact that you made making defeating the enemies a part of the win condition, because it meant I was always willing to spend the limited ammo on firing, little bits like that are crucial, and I think you nailed a lot of great ideas. I'd have loved to see more done with the spread on the ground doing something, but even just as a top down shooter, it was enjoyable. Good luck!

Developer

Thanks so much!

i wanted to add more to the spreading, like enemies that sucked up mayo, or shot evil mayo, but just didnt have the time or scope to do so

if i turn this into a full release i def will tho!
