SCREAM JAM 2024 gHost's Choice -
The game is a short proof of concept that opens up a world of design potential as a detective game focused on the incidence and power of symbols. Detailed player interaction to locate the offending symbol of a malevolent entity provides a wonderful opportunity for environmental storytelling, with Bernadette’s fate told only through items and not dialogue. The hints illustrate how much thought has gone into the item placement and design to solve the puzzle by thinking of the scene as a whole, in terms of the source and timeframe of the objects. Although the game is short, it demonstrates a command of environment design and a great detective mechanic.
Thank you for submitting Paranormal '98 to SCREAM JAM 2024, and congratulations on being selected as one of the ten gHost's Choice entries for the jam!
it was a little bit intimidating / overwhelming in the beginning because of the walls of text all available at once, However, I've played a bunch of submission and imo this one is by far the best one! The design, story and art style are all top notch and I could really picture a full length game like this becoming a big success. Good job y'all
Hey! Thank you so much for the generous comment! Checked out your game and was blown away by how good it was! Means a lot to us!
I do somewhat agree with the wall of text and will see if we can strike a balance somewhere in the middle in the future!
One of the best ones I have played so far. I love what you guys have accomplished in such a short amount of time! congrats!
Thank you so much! The team was super talented and absolute champs!
This is one of the scariest entries I've played so far! You guys have absolutely nailed the atmosphere and the setting and environment were really well done. Played this with a friend and we were freaking out trying to find the object xD
Thank you so much for the kind words! It makes us super happy to hear that!
Really enjoyed your game as well and I do think it has one of the best stories in the jam!
Very atmospheric, stylish, and cohesive entry! The environment is wonderful, evoking noir comic book vibes, at the same time having an underlying cosmic horror feel to the investigation. It plays so fluidly and the narrative is delivered to the player in an informed, yet convincing manner. The mechanics of looking at objects feels terrific, and had me so intrigued about investigating other cases and deducing which code to mark on what object. The hint system is welcome, and I used it even after deducing it for myself, and was welcomed to be informed further about the case. Terrific art direction and sound design, my only complaint is that I want more! Great work team!
Wow, thanks a lot! Couldn't hope for better feedback, glad to hear that for a proof of concept we hit most of the goals we set out to hit. And it means a lot coming from you guys, you made a hell of a game over there.
Cool game. Looks awesome. Mechanics make you think, at first it is difficult to understand what is required.
Thanks for playing! It does take some time getting into for sure.
Very good premise for a game and an excellent style! Unfortunately, I found the sigil right away so it ended up not needing to look at any of the other objects in the room, although reading the other comments I think I might have gotten lucky. I do however, think it would have been a little more interesting to not have been told what entity we were looking for and have the player suss it out themselves with the context clues in the room, but this is a very promising start if it were to be expanded out into a longer and larger game.
Thanks a lot for the feedback, there were internal discussions on how to tackle giving hints, and in a longer game the idea of first identifying what you're meant to look for definitely would be a feature.
Really cool game going off the concept of the player's observation skills. Had me hooked till the end of the level and honestly with making this in a week, you guys did a phenomenal job! Obviously, with a game like this, it doesn't tackle horror in the traditional way but it still has just enough to give a chilling and creepy tone. The only criticism i have is that when I exited out of the elevator, the camera kept rotating downwards to the right when walking around. Aside from that minor bug, this was a really solid experience!
Thanks very much! We were definitely trying to stuff in as much atmosphere as we could, glad to know that it's hitting. And thanks for the bug report~
Excellent game! It's polished, intriguing, and unique! Definitely agree with the other comments - more entities would be fun!
Thanks! Glad you liked it~
So clean and pretty! Got hooked and had a great time playing. Love the style ❤️
Thanks very much! We loved yours as well =)
Really cool game with a great style and feel about it. Would definitely play for much longer with varying individual case files. Great work guys!
Thanks very much! Very much enjoyed yours as well!
Really cool that this game has multiple endings. The comic book art style looks very cool.
Thanks for playing!
Really enjoyed your game, can see a lot of work went into it. The atmosphere is nicely creepy and I got startled in the end (I died). Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much for trying out the game!
The game made me a bit dizzy trying to find the mark, and I had to take a hint. I love the black and white visuals and the assets you created. It's a really good game!
Seems like the paranormality has started to affect you through the screen :O
Thanks for checking out the game!
The art is great. And mechinics is interesting, seems like it could become a big project, hope you continue to develop it. The hint made my life too easy, I found the eye quickly after looking at it)
I found an interesting issue: the game allows you to crawl by pressing ctrl+wasd, but when you press ctrl+w browser tab closes (I use chrome and it's a hotkey here) and you need to restore the tab and start the game from the beginning. Probably you do not need the crawling mechanics at all? Or you can use some other key for it.
Overall, really cool game, good job!
Thanks for letting us know! Didn't realize Ctrl+W also closes Firefox tabs as well. Might have to add a warning on page for now.
Its not too optimized for the browser for some people so we do recommend downloading it and playing it there!
I really like the visual and the world building. I read all the manual before starting as I was interested in all the different kind of spirits. I couldn't find the eye thought, so maybe I'll try again later.
This game is super clean! Concept is very cool and visually looks fantastic, and plays well to boot. I hope you continue this and I can't wait to hunt for the other entities! I will definitely be back for more. It took me a while to find the eye but I was so excited when I did.
Loved the visual style of this so its an easy 5/5 on the aesthetics! could only find 3 of the 4 endings though
Thank you so much for the kind words! We had lots of fun making the aesthetics.
Hint: If you stick around too long something might happen to you investigator
Note taken
Brilliant atmosphere! I got so scared during the room exploration lol. Same here, It took me some time to find the eye, overall a super cool game!
Loved everything about this game except how I literally could not find that eye no matter how much I looked. Had to stop since I could feel myself close to getting heated lmao. Still, amazing work.
Hey~ sorry to hear that, we're working on solutions of giving the player some help without straight up giving away the answer- we'll likely update the game before the end of the week!
