This was a fun game to play. Short and to the point. Controls are simple and not hard to pick on the ammo switch mechanic.

What I liked:

1. Fun gameplay

2. Visuals are very atmospheric and convey the sense of spookiness

3. Music and sound effects were good

4. Cool easter eggs hidden in the game (I found one)

5. The boss fight at the end, albeit a bit gimmecky, was a good addition

What I didn't like:

1. the player movement is momentum based, which is not a big deal, but I would prefer some snappier movement myself

2. One particular section felt a bit unfair. It's the one where you suddenly get surrounded from both sides by spooders with little time to react. I know there's a secret passage in that area (I discovered it by going the other way), but maybe adding some indication to that passage would make this section more fair to the player

All in all, I really enjoyed playing this game. Well done

Thanks for the fantastic feedback. It's funny for the first point because I usually rack my brain during all my projects that involve player based movement whether to use weightier movements or quick and snappy. I really need to find some testers while prototyping to let me know what feels better! lol And for the ambush sequence, that was suppose to play out a lot differently, I overlooked an FPS issue and the enemies took about 3-4 times longer to kill than what they were suppose to. So when you got ambushed it would be like a quick mow down sequence, but they turned into bullet sponges xD

Just beat it!  Very cool game.  I liked the audio especially the way it blended into each other when different scenes were happening.  I love it when game jam games include secrets so that was a really awesome thing to see.  On I think the second room where a swarm of spiders starts chasing you from behind, I probably died like 4 or 5 times because I couldn't shoot them down fast enough and once they're on you, you're basically dead in a second.  Once I got past that, I only died one other time vs the final boss but somehow managed to cheese him by getting him stuck when I ran back down the hallway I came in from.  Great job with this!

Developer

Thanks for playing through the game and struggling through the spongy enemies. Thanks to an oversight on my end with the FPS in editor versus the web build it really threw off the balance of the enemy health. It takes about 3 times longer than it should to defeat the bugs. I appreciate hearing about how your experience went. It's always interesting hearing/seeing how people play through your game.

I really liked how grimy it felt, the mechanic is neat and a great take on the theme. I also loved the audio and the atmosphere you created. I died once and finished pretty easily so I think the difficulty suits a jam game really well. Maybe less health points on some of the bugs just to give the player's gun a bit more impact. Great submission.

Developer

Thanks for trying it out! I agree the enemy health was a real issue. Lesson learned to cap fps when testing in editor lol

Great game! The atmosphere was so cool having to go through the hallways and seeing blood trails ahead as it felt almost like a dead space game and I loved it! For the gameplay it was cool being able to switch weapon types, but it did felt it bit repetitive shooting down a single spider for long periods of time and then switching to a different color. The ambush moments were interesting, but I feel could of let us some bit of wiggle room to survive as I died a bunch being sandwich from both sides coming at me in huge packs. The final fight was dope and the game overall was intriguing, nice submission!

Developer

Thanks for playing SoulWolfx! It's a shame the game couldn't be played as intended. Each moment was designed to be suspenseful enough that you thought you might get hit but you would easily have enough time to kill the bugs, however once the webgl build was made, that all got thrown out the window.  As for the ambush part where they come in from both sides, there's a secret tunnel on the right to help escape! But it's only noticeable if you see the blood pattern on the ground quick enough. This was definitely intentionally cheeky on my part lol I appreciate the feedback though, it helps me understand that maybe my hints and intentional guidance to secret areas wasn't clear enough.  Maybe I should put that in the description for people to know to look out for that stuff. Since that's how the player is given more life .

Very fun to play and I was genuinely scared when a group of spiders surprised me when I was running and trying to kill other spiders! Nice submission!

Developer

Thanks Mr. Moo. Those suspenseful moments were a little ruined due to a  FPS issue causing enemies to be spongy, but I'm glad you had fun!

Game was really nice. Very well done!

Developer

Thank you for trying it out!

I really like the atmosphere of the game! very scary hehe, got ambushed by a lot of spiders, I got some white stripes on my screen when I shoot, but I don't know if it's my computer

Developer

That's interesting to hear about white stripes flashing. That's the first time anyone's mentioned it. I honestly wouldn't know what would cause it either. Thanks for trying it out and hopefully the flashing of those lines didn't strain your eyes!

Visually representing the equipped weapon with a colour glow is something I haven't seen before, and it works really well! Nice grimy atmosphere to this game too

Developer(+1)

Thank you! It's funny you mention the weapon color change because I added that last minute , I was originally only going to utilize the light.  I appreciate the comment about the atmosphere. That's where I spent most my time so I'm glad to see it pay off.

What I liked

  • I really liked the art. Even though the bugs stuck out from the rest, it still had a fun look.
  • The charge up sound with the camera shake was fantastic, It really adds to the fun factor.
  • Using different colored ammo for the corresponding enemies felt natural.
  • The sounds fit what I was seeing.
  • I loved that the big bugs broke up into a swarm of different color bugs. I was expecting to get a swarm, but I expected them all to be the same color. That was a fun surprise.

Feedback / Suggestions

  • It's been pointed out in earlier comments, but it does get a little hard to see enemies at points. For me it was the red ones.
  • The bugs could use less life. It's not noticeable at first, but after killing a few swarms you do notice that it takes little while.

Overall, a fun game and a nice break from the more puzzle-like games. Mindlessly shooting bugs was just what I needed. Congrats!

Developer

Thanks for the structured feedback! The bug health is a known issue due to an FPS oversight on my end, but as for the seeing the spiders, was it still hard to see them when aimed at the spiders? The intent was when they were out of player's line of sight they would be in the shadows.  I like trying to make the games accessible, and even  tried to ensure that the contrast of the enemies still slightly popped out from the back ground. So I would be curious to find out more as why it was hard to see them. Maybe I could add a colorblindness type filter option in future games.

Submitted

Yeah, it looked like the red ones went invisible or I thought I had killed it already. I could tell that they had that shadow look when out of sight, but the red specifically becomes really hard to see. And no problem! The structure just helps me stay on point without getting sidetracked.

The art was great, especially the lighting and the audio suited the atmosphere, too. I'm always a fan of top down run and gun gameplay, so I really enjoyed this and I loved the level design, with all the secrets.

Lots of people have mentioned the framerate/spongy enemies, so I won't go on about that. It would be good if you made the enemy deaths a little more juicy - a louder sound effect and maybe some sort of explosion that would stand out against the slime puddle they're wading through, maybe?

Super polished and fun to play, especially in the short amount of time you spent on it!

Developer

Thanks Dr! I like the suggestion of adding an additional enemy death sfx.  That could have helped with additional player feedback.  Didn't even consider it at the time of working on the enemies.

Submitted(+1)

Good shooter, it's not that easy even the weakest enemies take a lot of hits, enemies taking damage from a specific color is a clever idea.

Developer(+1)

Thanks crow!

I loved this entry! The gun felt very fulfilling to shoot :D

Developer

I was hoping the gun would be fun to shoot. I did spend 1/10th of my 10 hours solely on just that lol Thanks for playing it though!

Submitted(+1)

Love it when people make custom audio that works well in there projects. Idea is awesome a bit hard for me to see the enemies coming (Might be my night mode setting though). Great idea and well executed!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! The sfx were fun to make. The music came from a friend I thought they did fantastic work on this! Looking forward to checking out your game

Submitted(+1)

The concept was really cool! I loved the jump scares when the bugs just suddenly appear behind you.

The only thing I would suggest is to make is more easier to kill the bugs. You need soo much ammo just to kill 1 bug. Although the ammo isn't limited. But it's gets a little bit boring just spraying at them doing nothing.

Except that, Awesome game! Had really fun playing it!

Developer

Agree 100% with you about the enemies. With the fixed frame rate in the web build, it caused the health values to be way off the mark for balance!

Submitted(+1)

Fun game! Enemies are a bit spongy IMO, but overall really well made, like the atmosphere!

Developer(+1)

For sure agree about the enemies. Sadly when playtesting, never capped the frame rate, so once it became fixed in the web build, my enemy health values were wayyy wonky

Submitted(+1)

what a use of the awesome theme
Developer

Not sure if this is a compliment or not lol

Submitted(+1)

Used the theme very well!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I had a few more mechanics I wanted to implement to tie it in even better, but the tight personal time constraint threw that right out the window lol

Submitted(+1)

This game easily had the best atmosphere out of all the games I've played! You could pretty easily expand this into a whole project.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate that. The art and atmosphere direction was what took majority of my time and I was happy with how it turned out. I can't wait to try your game. From the thumbnail, looks spooky!

Submitted(+1)

This was lots of fun. I like the idea, and would love to see it taken even further. Perhaps the ability to mix ammo types, or maybe blue ammo kills blue enemies but heals red ones? haha
Awesome work! Nice atmosphere too.

Developer

I really like that idea! I had a few more mechanics planned out, but only had 10 hours to work on this project so had to trim down an incredible amount lol Your game looks pretty interesting. Looking forward to giving it a go!

Submitted(+1)

I liked the theme a lot! I think you could take these art assets and make a top down horror game!

Developer

Thank you! The art took most of my time up. Art isn't my strong suit when it comes to game dev but I enjoyed focusing on that to try to give it a better atmosphere/polished feel. Looking forward to playing your game on stream!
