This movement system is a ton of fun, I loved chaining my spins together, it made for some very fun traversal and I really appreciate that there's no real limit to it because that just makes the game more fun. For whatever reason though the game thought I was using a gamepad despite playing with mouse and keyboard so it just kept giving me controller inputs for progression and tutorializing which made it so that I actually got stuck for like a minute trying to figure out how to progress after beating the first boss. I'm not sure if the controls on screen are for the gamepad on default or if something weird in my setup made the game think I was using a gamepad

DrillHead's itch.io pageGame's Take on the Theme
As main mechanic for the Game, the player must spin the joystick in order to charge their drill to perform more damage and throw further the character.
Did your team make the majority of the art and music during the jam?
Yes

Wow I'm impressed to see a pixel art 2D game made in unreal and working correctly! Very well done! The art looks amazing and the controls feel very good, congrats! :D
Love the artstyle and the music is also super cool. Everything is super polished and nicely put together, the bosses are fun to fight, the drill mechanic is very neat, I had lots of fun. Gotta say, it gets a bit tiresome after some point spinning the joystick but the bosses are not really hard to kill, they are still a challenge but they don't huge tanky amount of HP, which makes the whole spinning joystick more bearable.
So yeah, I'm giving 5 stars every category to this one. It's a extremely good game that actually deserves more rates than what it currently has.
This game gets full marks from me! You have incredibly expressive pixel art and great game feel. I particularly like the effects you have on charging, hitting the boss, and both the game over and win screens! Each boss is unique and you really embraced the theme with rotating the stick. I also really love seeing more Unreal games in jams!
One piece of feedback, I think the second bosses attacks come out too fast. This one pictured in particular. I'd love if the hand lingered just a fraction of a second longer before it hits so you can react better!
Outstanding job!
It's very risky for you to make game only for controllers, but since i had one, i really liked playing this one. Controls are well chosen. My only complain is that artstyle sometimes differs in style, i don't mean that some sprites are poorly made, but seems like you had two artists, that didn't try to match identical styles. It isn't bad at all, the main character reminded me of Blasphemous mc.
In my case I was cucked because my controller doesn't have analogs, but even using just the basic attack to hop around already showed the fluidity of controls and animations, so even if I couldn't truly experience it the way you intended, I can tell you really put a lot into making it control well and look good as you do so.
The game over effects are so intense it looks like you died in a game where you die in real life if you die in-game, a bit at odds with how cute and colorful the game is to me. It's really minor, but maybe something to put at the bottom of the priority list and consider a redesign one day.
We are glad that you liked the game, despite not experimenting it with the spin.
We work a ton on the character controller, so it fills our ego seeing comments like yours.
About the game over, we are truly fans about the over the top effects. In our case, we miss even more camera shakes and flashing effects, but we worked with tight time. We appreciate discordant points of view with ours xd, that generates conversation and is per se cool.
I can't install it, it says tbmll.dll is missing or something
The pixel art in the game is fantastic! My right arm got a good workout from playing. The attack being also a movement boost/jump is a very interesting touch. Controls are smooth. I managed to get to the chase scene but couldn't figure out what to do when I reached the surface. Overall, really enjoyed it! Congrats on a game well made!
Neat submission. Interesting interpretation of the theme making the player spin the controller to charge up attacks. Aesthetic is great, art and animations for the bosses are top notch. Particularly liked the blinking eyes of the second boss. SFX have a nice crunch to them, and music complements the gameplay well too.
For improvements, I found a couple of bugs; mainly a bug where I killed the boss and then died in the next frame, meaning both the Victory and defeat screens came up. The start screen also seemed a bit bugged? (Camera seemed to take a while to follow player and it sounded like stuff was going on off screen).
Great job!
Thanks for the feedback!
We are glad you liked our take on the theme. We for sure tip our pixel artist with his incredible work.
About the bugs, we are aware of the Deafeat-Victory bug, but we were pretty short in time so it was one of those that go into production.
We are taking notes of all the feedback and for sure work on an update of the game
Love the vibe of this game ! Boss patterns are pretty funny and the balancing fair. Well done !
The 2D action feels so plastic and fun, its really well made, makes me think of other games like Cuphead but its different i know, so well made, I rate graphics on top but all is cool, also if you have time, please rate my game too, thanks!!
The game is really good, the concept is very original, the bosses and the graphics are great :D
WOOOOW, this is a really good game! I love how well it looks, sounds, and plays! There are some rough edges and unfinished content, but considering the limited time, I’m shocked at how polished and high-quality everything is!!!! This is an amazing piece of work, and it’s a shame that fewer people have rated it than it deserves! I really hope you continue working on this project because it’s truly great. Excellent work!
I almost got away with using a keyboard but I couldn't do all the abilities! I don't have a controller to use, but I love the art! nice work! Grats on submission and good luck!
I rated and submitted to return the favor of your rate submission of my game below!
- If others read this, RATE/REVIEW my game to get me to try yours as well! Thanks!
Adorable and colorful pixel art and animations! The gameplay loop was a neat idea, but it was difficult to make sense of the controls, even when I had a general idea of what I was supposed to do, it felt like I was fighting against it, but the whole idea was really fun. Good job! :D
Super cool game, awesome visuals and a fun gameplay concept. However, it seems like the game is based entirely around controller inputs and I couldn't get my controller to work for this game for the life of me. I was able to beat the first boss by using WASD for movement and J to drill attack but I couldn't get past the win screen for the first boss because I couldn't "push A". Not sure if that's just a problem with my system or with the game but maybe in the future provide some form of keyboard support for greater accessibility.
I do wish I could have played more, I really liked what I played and the screenshots make the rest of the game look even cooler!
Hi!
Thanks a ton for the feedback. We are sorry you didn't have the chance to go further on the game.
Due our take on the theme we decided to only support controller (at least at the moment) for the spin mechanic.
We encourage you to try again our game using a controller (pc ones or an xbox controller worked perfectly for us)
