Pretty cool game, but I can just at the bottom of the screen and not get hit by anything lol(at some points).

Hope that you'll also rate mine :) https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-12/rate/2973690

This was a fun little runner-style game! I really liked how the audio and visuals got more and more intense as you got closer to the end of the level.

Some feedback:

  • Hitting obstacles didn't really seem like it did much. I would hit an obstacle, then clip through it and I was a little confused on if hitting an object was supposed to stop you in your tracks, or you hit it and it still lets you through after slowing you down or hurting you. If it's the latter, you could have the player blink for a short period (think like how old arcade games had your character blink while you were invincible after taking damage) to communicate that that's what happened. You might also consider adding a fuel penalty for each hit obstacle.
  • I had a tough time judging depth, and I missed a couple fuel pickups because of it. I don't really have a good suggestion for this one, but it's something to consider.
  • Sometimes, obstacles in the foreground blocked the camera and I couldn't see the player boat.

Your game had a lot of charm and a really intense mood! I enjoyed it!

I really appreciate the feedback!

Great idea about the fuel penalty. I will definitely add post jam. I also want to take a closer look at collision and the foreground. I think another comment mentioned camera angle. Maybe if I adjust the camera angle that could help with depth?

Thanks.

so I know you didn’t write the music, but you implemented it very well. I don’t know if you based your level design off the music but It felt like the music and the action matched very closely. The game gets more challenging and the music ramps up. I really wanted to beat the game but in the last 25% I kept messing up haha. I tried like 5 times to beat the game lol. I’m sure I could beat it with more time.

I also really appreciated that while the river moves your boat along whether you are moving forward or not, you gave the player the ability to move in all directions along the moving river giving you a lot of control.

great game overall. Felt really polished

Thanks for the feedback! Yea, the music is 3 different layers and I merged them together with a cross fade in Audacity. In the coding, the timing of the obstacles is always the same, so I tried matching the music with them. Post jam I want to implement a obstacle indicator / preview. Glad you enjoyed the game.

Great game, initially I was confused because wasd didnt trigger the next sequence. Music is great, and graphics are beautiful. It felt great zooming around.
Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'll def be fixing the tutorial post game jam.

Submitted (1 edit)

I think to improve the game, the tutorial does not count you as pressing the movement keys if you press W A S D, even if these keys still work (Or I got lucky and it only worked once, but it might be because I pressed the arrow keys). It only works if you specifically press the arrow keys. Otherwise the game looks like it does nothing. If the game were updated post jam this might be where to start.

After I figured out the problem I really liked the mechanics of the floating rocks and how they push you back, and how you need to avoud going too far back, nice job on the game!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry about the tutorial. I realized after I already submitted. I'll definitely fix after the jam. Cheers.

Great game! Loved the feel of the game and the gameplay was pretty smoothh too, in the tutorial wasd wasn't recognised which you might want to add but overall great game :D

Developer

Sorry about the tutorial. Glad you enjoyed the game. I'll fix the bug after the jam. :) I'm not sure if its too late to fix that bug on submission?

fun to play and perfect entry for a game jam
the bushes in foreground were bit annoying but I guess it adds to game difficulty so I'm fine with that

Nice game! the colliders seem kinda wonky with the boat getting stuck but looks like you're already aware. Pretty cool to sail a little boat and the atmosphere is great!

I really enjoyed this, I think more consistent UI would be a great addition, good submission!

Exciting experience, simple and concise gameplay! Here's an interesting thing to consider: as a PC gamer who's super used to WASD movement, when I noticed that A/D could move my boat, I assumed that the game was just stuck after nothing happens for awhile of me moving back and forth - I suggest checking for all horizontal inputs rather than just the arrow keys as you instructed, or to strictly only let the boat move with the arrow keys and nothing else. Other than that nitpick though, everything else was pretty neat, great submission!

Developer (1 edit)

That's great advice. I think I was being too arrow-key specific in the tutorial. I realized after submitting. lol :_  I'll update after the rating period. Thanks for checking out the game and for the feedback!

Nice graphics and sound! the movement is very smooth, good to control

I really like how this game starts up. The fixed perspective, combined with the music and the parallax effect, really set the tone in a nice way. The way the water pushed you up and down was great, especially when it would help you over an obstacle.

I do wish the movement was a little more responsive to weave between some of the tighter areas,  as it seems to move a bit further after I stopped pressing. But overall, nice looking game with some interesting moments!

Developer

I appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the movement / effects.
