Jam organisation/rules questions Sticky

Hi all!
There are a lot of topics on this community forum and sometimes people use it to ask questions about the rules or organisation of the jam. This means a couple of things:

  1. We might miss questions which means people get no or wrong answers.
  2. Questions are going to be asked more often because nobody is going to go through all of the topics just in case someone asked the same thing before.

To prevent these, this sticky topic can be used to ask questions about the rules and organisation of the jam.

This post is not to ask your technical or programming related questions! Only use this if something is unclear in the rules or if you are not sure if something is allowed!

can we use any software

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Hey there!
Yes you are free to use any software you have the license for!
Make sure that you are able to export your game to a working windows build and/or webGL to increase the amount of people playing your game!

(+1)

and where to suggest a topic: I want to suggest a Topic: 2D pixel shape we need to create a game about a 2D farm in the style of pixel graphics

Jam HostSubmitted

Hi there!

Sadly there is no way to suggest themes. A week before the jam starts there will be a link to vote for a theme out of a list we picked ourselves. The winner of this vote will be announced as the jam theme at the starting time!

Submitted

When will the link be available?

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Hi there!

The link is now available on the jam page! :)

Submitted

awsome!

this is my first jam and i was wondering if there was restrictions on the style of game like can there be 2d and 3d games in the same jam?

Jam HostSubmitted

Hi there!

You can create any type of game you want!

Hello! If I have an early prototype, can I significantly change it for the jam theme, add content and put it on jam?

Personally, what I know is you can do it. However, your game needs to be related to the game jam theme

Jam HostSubmitted(+2)

Hi there!

We would like to ask you to make the majority of the game during the jam.
You can use pre-made assets, but please don't just submit a game that you made before the jam started. It wouldn't be fair to other participants if you spent a total of 4 weeks on your submission while everyone else only gets one :)

(+1)

Hello, thank you for your answer. I will start from scratch when the jam starts.

(1 edit)

Are we allowed to port the game to other platforms after the submission deadline? I've participated in a jam once before and had some trouble uploading a webGL build, so I just posted a windows build, which resulted in my game not being played very much.

(+2)

Hi,

Personally, what I know, it is not possible to publish another game after submission in itch.io. Here is an advice. You can create a private itch.io page to see if your port works or not. Then publish it in the official jam page

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Hi there!
During the rating period (after the submission deadline), new uploads are locked. This means that you can NOT upload any new platforms or updates after the submission deadline. Of course this is unlocked after the rating period ends!

To make sure you have all builds playable and ready on your page, factor in at least an hour to get your submission page ready and submitted!

Ok, good to know! I'll reserve some more time for building and uploading then.

Submitted

Hi, i know this post is old, but if you use Unity, i might know why your WebGL build didn't work. :)

(+3)

I am not entirely new to gane design, I have seen videos, and tried getting into it, because it is really fun, but my skill is awful, and I was wondering if the game can be super short, like 2 minutes long, would that be acceptable?

Submitted(+3)

Yes,...most people won't even play your game for that long xD

Jam HostSubmitted(+3)

Hi there!

As the other person also said: short games are completely fine!
It is actually recommended to create games that are on the shorter side (5-10 minutes max to experience all content), for a few reasons:

1. People rating your game won't be playing the game for hours and hours. If your game has hours of content, the players rating your game won't experience all content  which might influence your rating (negatively!).

2. Scope issues... The jam is only a week long, so planning a super long game might result in not being able to do everything in a polished and nice way, which would also negatively influence your ratings.

Jams are a learning experience, where you are free to go out of your comfort zone and try to finish a small project. If that small project is a 2 minute long game, that is still an achievement because you finished something!

Thank you so much guys

Can I use Scratch or Construct?

Jam HostSubmitted

Hi there!

You are free to use any engine or framework you have access to, but keep in mind that most people only play games with a webGL build on their itch page. If a player needs to go to an external source or through a lot of effort (maybe even with very specific programs to open the files), it's likely they won't play and rate your game.

Hi

I am teaming up with my friends and i want to know how do i give credit to them when i submit the game

You put it in description or something

Submitted(+2)

There is an option to add more creators on a game page

where?

Jam HostSubmitted

Hi there!
Like the other user also said, there is an option to add other people to your game as creators.
I'm a little foggy on this (it has been a while), but I think you add them like this:
- Go to your game page from your personal itch dashboard

- Go to the admins section (might be under the other settings, not sure)

- Add your friends as an admin, by adding their itch link

They will get an email to confirm, or you get a link that you can send to them. If they are registered as an admin, you can also have them show as contributor to the game for both the jam and on the game page. This includes voting rights for the jam.

ok thank you so much

Submitted

Hi,

I have a friend's game jam which overlaps with this one, am I able to apply both themes and restrictions and submit the game to both? (knowing it's fine in the other jam, just wanted to make sure its not against the rules here, both start at the same time /wouldn't be starting until both are active)

Jam HostSubmitted (1 edit) (+1)

Hi There!

As long as you follow the theme and rules of both jams, you should be fine rulewise!
Keep in mind that I am not sure if you can submit one game to multiple jams, so keep some extra time to try that out and create an extra game page if needed..

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for the reply!
Will do!

Hi,  so i was banned from the discord server that was about a year ago then i was 12 now im 13 and hope to join the server again, ive been trying to get in for months but havent been able to contact you in anyway. For people who see this and aren't mods in the server please try to contact one of the mods and send them a link to this post, thanks in advance Discord: NonnaCafe#3108

Jam HostSubmitted

Hi there!

I have checked the logs and ban list and confirmed your story.

Some time after your ban we had a big issue with the bot, which means that bans issued before then don't automatically expire anymore.

I have now manually lifted your ban, so you are free to join back!

(+2)

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH

(+1)

Are we allowed to work on our game further after the jam’s voting/rating period has finished?

(+2)

Yes, the game is yours to do with what you want after the voting period.

Makes sense, I kinda knew it from the beginning but I asked to be sure. Thanks!

Your welcome :)

(+1)

Hey there! I am 15 years old right now and wanted to know the age requirement for the event. You see, usually have a 16+ age requirement. Would like to know if I am eligible :)

(1 edit) (+1)

Just the answer: You can join regardless of your age. The rules don’t state anything about age. “The only rule we have is that your game must not include any NSFW and offensive/discriminatory content.” - states the jam overview. I think you should read it if you haven’t.

Extra: Your age has almost nothing to do with game development at all. Sometimes a Kid can be smarter than an adult, and also an adult being smarter than kids is considered normal and is normal as well. It depends on the person, not their age. (Sorry for bad English though, I hope you at least understood what I mean)

Thanks for the information! I wanted to know about the age requirement not because I think age defines intelligence, but because I could not take part in the recent epic mega jam because of some legal issues related to age.

Happy Jamming!

I see, it makes sense now. Sorry if I said too much :3

You shouldn't be :)

Is it possible to be in more than one team. such as being in your own solo team and making music for a separate team

I think so, yes.

So where will we send our games?

(1 edit)

You just normally submit your game in Itch.io. Then, in order to submit your game to this jam, you have to click submit on the Jam’s Overview page and select your game. It’s that simple.

In case if you don’t know how to submit to Itch.io in the first place or you find it confusing, you can refer to the Itch.io’s official guides here.

thank you

I don't think this thread is the most appropriate for the above comment

Can I use powerpoint as a game engine?

(+1)

You just use any engine to make your game. Anyway, how are you even supposed to use PowerPoint as a game engine?

(+1)

Hmmmm...... Have you heard about powerpoint game jam?

(+1)

I just searched about PowerPoint Gamejam and now I see what it can also do xD. Pretty cool and interesting.

(+1)

BTW found out a game engine similar to powerpoint
Lets hope all works well

(+1)

What’s the name? I’d like to check that out.

Gdevelop

Ohh, I used GDevelop once. I kinda was uncomfortable with using Visual Scripting so I tried using JS but I was really confused so I did quit :3

Oh do you know what is the theme
I mean is it released?

Submitted

The theme is only released when the jam starts

Oh but JavaScript blocks are also added in gdevelop

I know, I did use it for a time but it was kinda confusing for me + I was a beginner at programming in general back in that time so didn’t continue.

Submitted

When theme is released?

17 hrs later

Submitted

Ok Thanks

Incorrect. There is a way to set multiple authors. See higher in the thread

Ok, thanks for the correction!

Can we post updates/logs of our games in the community section here on itch or do we have to use discord?

How long will you be able to vote after the submission period ends?

Submitted

Heya. I got a team and we're gonna make a game, but I'm considering making a 2nd game by myself, and submitting it too. Is it legal?

I am currently working hard on my game, and I wanted to know when I could post it to the public after voting starts. Such as to the app store or itch.io.

Submitted

Can i submit multiple projects? I have managed to create a complete product in like 2 days and have been wondering if i am allowed to submit another game in conjuction to the first project should the time allow it.

Can i use royalty free music from sites like incompetech and bensound?

Submitted

regarding the rules, is Blood counted as NSFW?

(-1)

can we take inspiration from other games like not submit the game but make our self and make some changes and then submit and pls reply fast since i cant  make games fast

Can we get our ideas from an already submitted game to another jam (specifically, Brackeys 1/Community Jam's All is Chaos in Love and War)

taking inspiration is good take inspiration and make your own game

When can we post our games to sources outside of the game jam?

Submitted

I want to improve my game after Jam ends, but I don't want to wait for voting to finish. Is it still aganst the rules to inclide a Google Drive link to the improved version in the game desciption with something like "this version of the game does not take part in the Jam"?

Submitted

how many assets we can use from the asset store?

as much as you want I think

Can we use art from the Brackeys MegaPack?

Do you accept uploads that didn't make the cut, even if we are 98% close ?

Hi, my name is Nandakishor and I have a doubt. So, about 2 days before the jam started,  I opened Unity and made a simple player movement script in 2D, added a few platforms and some coins. Then, when the jam started. I felt like I could modify the game and add more stuff to that little scene and submit it for the jam. Is that allowed?

Submitted

Can i use assets ?

Submitted

Can we use audio for our game from Youtube's official Audio Library?

Submitted

i can't upload a html file i can upload a downloadable one is that okay?

Can I upload a new file (on top of the old one) if I found a game breaking bug in my game?

Submitted (1 edit)

Can I add/edit cover image  or screenshots to my submitted game page now, when submissions are finished?

I have a question and I realise the game jam is already over but how would it be possible to uplaod a project made by multiple people. (for the future)

Submitted

One person uploads it and can set the others as Admins in the settings

Submitted

Is it allowed to release an update of the game during the rating period for bug fixing purpose ?

Submitted

no  Snopingas, we can't update game

Submitted

Can we change screenshots in the middle of the jam?

Submitted (1 edit)

Hey, so my game submissions page is full of lovely comments from everyone, thank you all!

My question is what will happen to tha submissions rating page after the jam ends? I'd really like for the option to make that public rather than it just disappear. Anyone know what happens to it? In contrast my public game page comments and ratings look a bit empty as everyone has had to use the jam page...

Submitted

Don't worry, it remains as is and actually stays open for new comments
