How comments said, this game is probably the best game of this jam, or at least at top 5
Very awesome gameplay, looks good, sounds good, and hard boss at the end, that I could't defeat, too hard to me :)
One of the best! The art and audio are on point and the mechanic is very creative! I feel like it got a little chaotic at times, but what's a good bullet hell without some chaos? Very well done submission!
I'd be thankful if you had time to check out my entry as well!
For me this is a clear winner participant! The gameplay loop is addicting and well thought out, visuals are polished and everything is very clear for the player. The option to choose whether to continue from current point or start over in case of losing was a good addition as well. Lots of simple yet creative mechanic and gameplay choices, which make this a really fun game to play. I think that you should definitely keep developing the idea! If I had to say something negative, it would be the enemy SFXs, which are a bit annoying at times, especially the bouncing bullets :D But that's a small thing!
We'd highly appreciate if you had time to check out our submission as well! :)
Thanks for the feedback! I'll be sure to check out your game!
I'll also like to know in a bit more detail, when you say the enemy SFXs are a bit annoying, what did you mean by that? Were the pitch too high, or volume too loud?
Hello! I think that the pitch was fine, and the volume didn't bother me either, but the sound didn't fit the theme so well. I personally would have preferred something a bit more "laser-y" if you catch my drift :D I'm referring to the bouncy bullets SFX!
the enemies creating new walls is a great idea, and so are bouncing bullets! the difficulty ramps up just slowly enough, i only think that maybe the enemies have just a bit too many HP (i already mastered the attacks before they were in low HP).
Good Game . Nice Visuals and Music
Pretty nice integration of the theme, and really good visuals imo. I like the music, even if it's a bit repetitive, but have some reserve on the sfx. It's more of a personnal preference but I'm not a huge fan of the 8bit vibe. They are also pretty loud, to they tend to hurt the ears and makes you want to lower the volume. I love the bouncing bullets sounds tho, it's super cute haha.
Overall pretty good game, that could just use some work on the sound design and mixing :)
Really fun mechanics !
I like that you constantly fight not only the boss but also your ground on the arena since you can destroy the blocks the enemy can place, the opportunities to upgrade in between phases in the fight is also a nice detail.
The difficulty ramps up a bit quick though, as i found it to become quite hard when the enemy started shooting the bouncy projectiles, however i gotta point out that the checkpoint to not start all over is a really good quality of life feature to have.
Overall good job :)
really cool game with interesting concept
I managed to beat the last stage and this game rocks
Was unable to beat the last stage but this game rocks
Really fun and solid gameplay, the punchy soundtrack definitely fits the style of the game. The enemy has a nice difficulty ramp and it gets really challenging by the end, I got a B rank lol
I would have liked to see more attacks that place blocks and maybe a bit more work on some sprites (visual style is great)
Sounds and visuals are just great, it feels really good. Overall, nice job!
This game is so juicy, it qualifies as a smoothie!
The controls feel super balanced, the sound effects are incredibly well incoorperated considering you were using sfxr and the music fits incredibly well.
I'd ask you to please play my entry as well. I've seen some of your comments and they're always super constructive and I'd like to improve. thx
the game is cool, its graphics are cool, it reminds me a little of the atari console, its audio and music I found a little noisy, but the theme of the enemy ship throwing boxes to arrest you I think it was a great idea for the "confined" theme "
Really fun. This game takes a very creative approch of the confined theme that works very well.
The level design, pattern design and difficulty are incredible and amke the game one of the most fun of the jam. The game is also very juicy.
It would be nice to have more UI for HP left or number of bombs available. The sound design is fine but very loud with aggressive sounds that can be a bit anappealing.
One of the greatest entry.
PS: I really wanted to use a mechanic similar to your evolving terrain. For some reason it makes me think of a mechanic of Will You Snail.
Wow! That is a really cool game :D
I really enjoied the walls being placed! The game feels VERY polished!! The audio was really well designed, there was a lot of feedback (visual and sound)! The art is very well made and keeps a good consistency throughout the whole game! I really liked the checkpoint system, especially since I'm not good at bullet hells... Really cool :D
The dynamic challenge from the constantly changing arena mechanic is very good. I do think the game gets a bit easier just from the bouncing bullets getting trapped in the walls?
Overall I enjoyed it a ton!
I love it, one of my favorite submissions so far! Played it a few times until I got S rank.
It's simple, it looks good, it plays good. Great use of the theme too! Enemy bullets felt a little too big but it's probably just me, and while the looping audio is the only glaring weak point in my opinion, it didn't stop me from playing. I noticed some people saying that the last attack is too difficult, and while I noticed how much harder it is than the rest of the patterns, it felt just right to me (though I'm used to playing very difficult bullet hells, so I understand why a less experienced player would think so). Well, maybe the frequency at which the boss spams blocks could be tweaked a little, but it was an exhilarating phase for me regardless.
It's funny how the game prevents cheese and using the blocks defensively by making the boss shoot through them if you let him fill the arena too much. I also really like the choices you get with your upgraded weapon - you can take it slow and break the blocks while keeping your distance from the boss, or you can risk it and pointblank the boss for a faster kill. A feature I personally could use would be a "speedrun timer" to let you see how well you do in the speed regard.
It's really fun as it is, and with some extra work put into it, War in Heaven could definitely be shaped up into something incredible!
I'm glad you enjoyed it a lot! You're probably the first to get an S rank (if no one else claimed otherwise so far).
A speedrun timer is a great idea for end-game players as a skill expression! I will look into that should I proceed with the game development further down the line.
Admittedly I kept the last attack as is because from the playtests sessions, the players actually gave positive feedback despite its difficulty. It may have been the dark souls effect with the satisfaction of defeating a difficult boss. I definitely will look into incorporating at least an easier difficulty for people to ease into the game much better. That or I could just ride the current wave, I think the retry mechanic gives plenty of handholding to players as is.
Thank you for your comment!
Oozes charm, I loved the visual feedback on this, everything felt had impact and you did an amazing job with the DOS aesthetics. I can see myself coming back to play again, good job, one of my favorites!
I like the idea that enemy can change the map! very unique and add some flavors to the game!
