A very good game (as expected from soft :D), very challenging and the bullet patterns are absolutely awesome.
just doing my best!
Extremely challenging and has the coolest bullet patterns I have seen (especially the 3D cube and slash effects in W4)! Like other people said, the audio is hard to listen to, as it feels compressed too much. I managed to get to the 4th world final boss, but it crashed for me. Overall fun and challenging!
i'm aware of the crash, it's been fixed in the post-jam version: https://verysoftwares.itch.io/3butterfexe
if you still want to see the final boss, you don't have to play all stages again - just select Practice mode and go to boss4.
What a fun game!
I have to say from the moment I started it I knew I was in for a treat! The bullet patterns, the enemies, the visual ques and the power laser, was all so satisfying and fun. Great entry to be honest< id love to see more of this!
this comment really brightened my day :)
aww im so happy about that! your games are something special! been going through them! :3
if you really wanna see more, you could try https://verysoftwares.itch.io/1butterfexe and https://verysoftwares.itch.io/2butterfexe - they're the earlier bullet hells in this trilogy
The retro-style reminds me of the classic arcade Galaga with a ton of bullets <3, I like the visual style of the score too and the fact that you can replay the game quickly is super cool. I think you could put a continue game function when the player is in more advanced stages, like old arcades. It's a very nice game, congratulations
Really enjoyed this, great visuals and retro look, it's hard yet never got me rage quiting with the checkpoint system! Well done!
Cute and well made sprites, SFX and music that fit the theme, and easy to use and precise controls, very nice! The gameplay loop felt a bit lacking for me, though, maybe there could be some additional objectives in the game to make it a bit more interesting, like collecting some orbs to do special attacks or something! But overall, a cool litte game that has a promising foundation! :)
Check out our submission as well, if you feel like it :)
i'll certainly check it out!
Hooo, I've never played tic-80 powered games before and this game certainly showed me what it can do. Bullet behavior is really intricate, and the stage 3 boss is really cool - the cube attack was impressive, and it's also funny how the boss shoots you with a bullet art of themselves :D
Though, I have to agree with Crow's Nest here - the large hitboxes of the player and bullets, coupled with player's slow speed, made the gameplay less enjoyable for me than it could be. I still had some fun "solving" the patterns in pointdevice mode, but more often than not I felt like the hits I got weren't very fair. The audio felt by far as the weakest point of the game.
I stopped at stage 3 boss but I would've continued if not for a slowdown issue - the game started working much slower and I wasn't sure what's the cause.
Overall, I think the difficulty would be much more fair if the player and bullet hitboxes, as well as player movement speed, were adjusted - for speed in particular I never felt the need to use shift focusing, so maybe change focus speed to the one the player currently has, while increasing player's normal speed? The diagonal speed also seems to be higher than the horizontal/vertical speed alone. And one last thing about player movement - the playing area was a circle, and yet when pushing against its boundaries it'd feel like pushing against a straight wall. It threw me off multiple times as I subconsciously expected the player to slide across it.
Still, I'd really like to revisit the game in the future when those issues are addressed! I liked the pointdevice-like mode of your game (even if it did call me a filthy casual haha) and its surreal and humorous story, it'd be pretty fun to play with some extra work!
(Oh yeah forgot to mention, not only do our games have matching stage count but also both have lasers available for special attacks! hi-five!)
thanks so much for the thorough feedback! i'll see what i can do about these for the post-jam build. as for the slowdown, i would add downloadable builds, but uploads are locked during the voting period.
Very smooth retro feel. I really liked the style and the audio brought me back to my childhood :P
It is certainly very hard. I like very hard but this feels very unforgiving. HOWEVER, with the frequent save feature, it created a very learnable experience and I really liked that. Felt like it would make me better at all bullet hells. Great job!
glad to hear you found it a learnable experience! the replaying is inspired by Touhou 15's Pointdevice mode.
Really cool! I think my c key is dead though haha! I kept wanting to restart to go further, enev though the patterns seemed physically impossible! Great game :D
Super polished game, it's very difficult (I got stuck at S2W1) but also very satisfying to play. Also, this is THE definition of a bullet hell haha, so many bullets!
I had a lot of fun but I wish I was better at it, because some patterns seemed impossible to beat. Felt overwhelming at times, but hey, I also really felt confined haha. It would be great if the casual mode had 3 lives as well, so I could try getting to the end of the game.
Overall great work with this one. I was hoping I could get to the level with the cube pattern, that one is so sick!
boss 3 has the cube pattern, i wish you luck in getting that far!
Overall, it's a very good game.
I'm a big fan of the art, it's nice and simple without being abstract. Also I'm just a sucker for pixel art.
It's very difficult, I only managed to beat the first level and like half of the second one on casual mode.
My one complaint would be that you chose to give casual mode has less health. It seems a little too hard for a casual player to deal with dying after one hit, even with the more frequent checkpoints.
The game’s scope and effects on display are commendable for the amount of time given in the jam.
However, the player’s rate of fire feels inadequate for cutting through denser patterns (and its rather large hitbox kind of exacerbates this while trying to micrododge).
Unfortunately I also had to eventually mute the game because certain parts of the game’s music had very high-pitched noises that were uncomfortable to listen to.
thank you for the constructive criticism, i'll take these into account in the post-jam build.
I loved the style, great polish, visuals and audio. The confinement was there, but I wish something more interesting was done with it. The dialogue was really engaging, and it all comes together really nicely, great job!
fun game, it has a very nice difficulty(casual), i like the dialoge, but the music/ sounds are a bit shrill and distracting
This as an amazing difficulty!
And for some reason it just prompts me to keep on trying! It is also super polished and feels like something you would've played on an nds or something. This game is literally perfect, from the animation on the casual and hardcore buttons to the colourful text.
I love every pixel!
wow, i'm honored!
This has great promise but it was too difficult for me to enjoy. Some of my thoughts:
Good:
Great fundamental mechanics. Cancelling enemy bullets is a simple mechanic that I think builds well into the bullet hell genre and allows for a unique variant of strategy that does not swing into the touhou-style of hardcore bullet hell.
Simple to play, simple to understand and also, the special attack is so satisfying to use.
Very classic bullet hell with loads of enemies and LOADS of bullets to boot!
To improve:
I have a few pointers but I think the most important one is the accesibility of the game. While I did previously make note of being excited at trying this out (and I was!), the difficulty did put me off way much more than I liked.
Granted, I'm not a dedicated bullet hell player (I've only won Touhou games at the Easy difficulty at best), so do take this with a grain of salt.
It is clear to me that you've developed this with a particular audience in mind, so that's good. But I believe the casual difficulty, even with the checkpoint systems, still makes the difficulty curve too steep to properly enjoy and players may become too frustrated before they get into the groove and start enjoying the game.
thanks for your thorough feedback!
The most bullet hell game I've rated so far. So many bullets... And you gotta dodge them all. Frustratingly hard, even on "Casual" mode. The difficulty is pretty high, but if you really like bullet hells, this is the game for you. Amazing game, great work!
Very polished graphics and sounds. I found the game a bit too challenging so didn't get to explore everything it had to offer. Great entry!
for a post-jam build, i think i'll add a stage select feature so players can at least preview the later stages.
Really fun! I remember playing your game way back in the Boss Rush Jam, glad to see you're still makin' stuff!!! Had a blast playing this :)
hehey, it's you! yeah i'm still hustlin'! glad you liked.
5 STARS ALL AROUND I LOVE THIS GAME AND HOW CHALLENGING IT IS!!!!!
