Theme interpretation
I decided to make a game about two main things that are both innovative and impossible to accomplished nowadays, while focusing on the Moon theme: recycle space debris and travelling from Earth to Moon with no spaceship in just a few minutes.

In MoonHop, we are trying to help the Moon Engineers to fix the recently broken recycle station with a required chip that we have to bring from Earth to the Moon as soon as we can, since everything is falling apart.

This one hooked me. I have to admit that I did not get past the final boss, but I played it for a good while. Felt like Star Fox on pacifism mode. I enjoyed how chill it was so that it wasn't stressful... you were just gliding through space avoiding obstacles. Very cool.

Developer

Wow! You almost made it, good job!

Thanks for your kind words!

This was really fun! The little popups as you move through the atmosphere are cute, and I really like the model for the player. The debris models are good too, though I think if they were a little more colorful they would be both easier to see and fit in well with the casual, relaxing atmosphere set by the music and UI.

The flying movement is quite good, I felt like I could dodge through tight gaps pretty effectively. It can be hard to judge distances from this angle though, so the moving objects could be tricky. A manual boost could definitely help there. The other thing was the hitboxes on the powerups felt a bit small. They're probably accurate, but I guess it's usually best to always make "good" hitboxes a bit larger than the object and "bad" hitboxes smaller than the obstacle if you want it to always feel fair!

Well done!

Developer

Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciated it!

Indeed, I totally agree that the hitboxes are quite tight, I will surely tweak them to try to create a more comfortable experience.

I’ll definitely also improve the visuals, trying to help the player to identify the obstacles and items easily.

Manual boost sounds great, I’ll consider to add this feature, it is a good candidate for next updates.

Thanks again!

This is a fun little flying game that I think would be a great fit on mobile. The graphics look really nice and clean to boot. The intro weirdly reminded me of DOOM and felt a bit inconsistent with the game itself.

Developer

Thanks for playing and reviewing! :)

Mobile control will be one of the first things I will add after the voting period, thanks for pointing it out.

I really enjoyed this. It was like Pilotwings...in space. And since that game was one of my favorite games when it was out, I gave a really high rating. Here are some small considerations:

1: Music was great. I loved the very intro music, but it wasn't obvious if I could artificially advance from that screen (was playing the Web build). It would have been nice to be able to skip it once I was done reading it, rather than wait for it, but it wasn't a huge deal, just a Nice to Have.

2: It was somewhat difficult to tell at times when I was going to hit some debris. I might recommend a proximity alert of some kind. This could be a sound, or it could be (probably preferably) visual.

3: I liked how the different levels were setup, but the stratosphere at least felt dramatically harder than the troposphere. I had lost no HP in the latter, while I died pretty close to instantly in the former. I think those rotating things could be a bit slower maybe? Or, failing that, it might make sense to include a small, personal booster that recharges that you can use, as well as the ring boosts - something like "maneuvering jets". Thinking about this more, there has to be a reason you're flying at a near-constant speed toward the moon from the earth - not so much the Final Cause, but rather the Efficient Cause: was the player jettisoned from a near-earth station? Were they rocketed up somehow? Perhaps something could be done with that, in order to give the player just a little bit more control over the gameplay.

4: I'm wondering if it would make any sense to include an oxygen indicator and have that be a third aspect of the game. It would make it harder, both for the player and for you the designer (to find the best places to put oxygen refillers), but to combat that you could have there be mini-stations between levels which would both give the player a minute to pause, which is nice, and be an auto-refill, and you would only run out of air if for instance you didn't get any rings at all. Perhaps for the first couple levels, you don't have to get rings to survive, but after that, you have to get more rings or risk running out of air before the end. I dunno, I definitely like your simplicity, and maybe this is just over-complicating it.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your kind words and such a detailed review!

(1) Definitely, the first thing I will change, I’ve received a lot of feedback about the intro.

(2) “Proximity alert” is a really nice idea, I will consider it to improve this aspect of the game, for sure I need to find a way to tweak it somehow.

(3) Really interesting point of view and thoughts about the way the player is rocketed up and the constant speed, I’ll certainly give it some thought having in mind your input. I wish I’d had more time to make a better difficulty progression between levels, unfortunately I ran out of time and some of them might look a bit inconsistent, in addition some floating things probably too dangerous.

(4) Oxygen and mini-stations concept sound great. I’m thinking about introducing more variables to the game, I’m not sure yet though, I’ll probably polish everything that seems a bit off first and then I’ll introduce new features.

Again, thanks a lot for all your input, it is surely helpful, I really appreciate it!

Great~ I do think the space junk just kind of appearing in the background is jarring... You could do fancy animations and background blending, but you could also just start with their opacity set to 0, and then gradually bring it up to 100 over the course of maybe 3 seconds. Good gameplay and enjoyable. Models are pretty good as well and the gameplay is well thought out. The rings you fly through could maybe be improved, as floating blurry circles screams more Superman 64 then flying astronaut. Particle effects around batteries are also a bit janky... Great for a jam game! 4.5/5 stars!

NOTE: I did play on the WebGl port, so some of the stuff might have been fixed if I wasn't too lazy to download

Developer

Thanks a lot for your kind words and great feedback!

I totally agree with everything you just said. I’ll definitely do something about the objects appearance, the opacity technique might do the trick, thanks for the tip. I’m still laughing when I read the your reference of Superman 64 because I thought about that too X), but I ran out of time to improve both the circles and batteries particle effects.

At the moment, there is only the webGL port uploaded, after the voting period I will add native builds as well, trying to improve the features mentioned in all the feedback I’m receiving.

Again, thanks very much!

the audio was rather enjoyable. the game reminded me of shiny hunting in ultra moon.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback! I haven’t played Pokémon Ultra Moon yet, I definitely will try it out after your comment :)

My laptop was a little too slow for it, but I still enjoyed it.  The audio was especially good.  Well done!

Developer

Thank you for giving it a try even it played slow in your laptop :) The game is a bit hardware demanding at the moment, specially the webGL port, after the Jam I want to upload native builds and improve the performance.

Thanks for the feedback a playing!

Fun game - all the different pieces of space debris were modelled well and each was interesting to look at.

Really wanted to see what happened when I reached the moon, but I tried a few times and struggled to get half way!

Good job overall :)

Edit: I forgot to mention - I love the dancing astronaut on the main menu!

Developer

Thank you for your kind words! I hope you can make it through the end sometime, the last level (Space) is very different than the others and there are final cut scenes.

Thanks for playing!

Super cool! The gameplay is simple, but it's definitely attractive! It is the first game that I win in the jam!

But still some problem like collision detection is not perfect. ( I always confused with the collision.)

Developer

Thanks for your feedback and nice words! I’ll definitely tune the collisions later on, box colliders are possibly too tight to the mesh objects.

Submitted(+1)

Super fun. Didnt finish, but played 3-4 times. Think it may be easier on a controller for me. Good job.

Developer

Thank you so much! I will adapt it for controllers after the voting period, thanks for the suggestion :)

Nice mix of 3d and pixel art and great audio, makes for some interesting play sessions!

I found the controls to be a little stiff, making the gameplay a little bit hard. Never reached the end but still had a lot of fun with it.

The initial screen with the message takes way too long to disappear, to the point that I thought the game wasn’t going to start. I was also unable to skip it. If by any chance this a loading screen, I would display some sort of progress to inform the player that something is happening.

Overall, great job! Congratulations!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback João! I’ll take into consideration your suggestions. Being able to skip the intro will be the first update once the jam voting period finish. I’ve done the fix already but I don’t want to upload a new build since I think it would go against the rules.

I haven't been able to get very far (it seems that this is very hardcore in my taste), but overall the game looks fun and I like it.

It seems that the game lacks a fog that would hide the appearance of obstacles.

Developer

Thanks CrazyFizik! I thought about the fog but I ran out of time, I will definitely implement that feature. Thanks for the feedback!

Great game, really polished.  The music even reminded me of "moon safari" by air.  So I guess even that was  on theme!

Developer

Thank you jameshuk! The song is not called “Moon Safari” but “Space Jazz” also trying to match the theme :). I also sped up the tune to match with the game flow :P.

Definitely it sounds like Air’s Moon Safari beginning of the album, good catch! If you are interested, you can see the full music and songs credits in my GitHub page.

Amazing game! Has the StarFox vibe going! The intro was kind of long, especially if you had to restart the game. The pixel art and 3D seemed to clash a bit since they aren't really mixed. Don't get me wrong, they look great.

Perhaps adding check points would have encouraged me to finish till the end. I died about 3 times before leaving giving up. I just wanted to get through the game. I always seemed to end up with 1 HP just before I get to the part with the missiles. It might be a good time to have health batteries(?) just before or after that point or like I mentioned earlier a check point.

The controls were great, though at some points it was hard to determine if I was going to touch the power up or the circle boost thing or dodge a moving pillar, or not.

Overall, it was a fairly unique game with a lot of 3D assets that were visually pleasing. Great game jam submission!

Developer

I agree with you, there are many things that you mentioned that I will definitely tune.

Thanks so much for the valuable feedback!

Shooting your self to the Moon, really cool idea.  I liked the intro with the 1980s sci fi style music and panning across ruins on the Moon.  A nice selection of obstacles and variety too, and the speed up fx looked great too.  Fun game, I enjoyed playing :)

Developer

Thanks so much for playing and your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed it! :)

Love the gameplay and how polish everything is- it all comes together nicely! I can picture myself playing this on my phone, pretty fun loop.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment. Definitely one of the first things I will focus on after voting period ends will be to adapt the controls for mobile and improve the performance. Thanks again!

Really good game, very aesthetic. Wish the hitboxes were just a tad more forgiving. I like the music and the robo voice every now and then, makes it quite a relaxing experience.
I have to ask though, who left giant spinning blades in space?

Developer

Probably they popped up from the Moon recycle facility :P Thanks for playing and your feedback!
