Game description
Hack servers, find vulnerabilities, use people's secrets to uncover more accounts and build a network of pwned machines.

Theme interpretation
Core gameloop - hacking one server, then movingaround the file-system looking for files that reveal secrets that uncover the passwords for OTHER servers, so the player expands over time.

Early hand-written missions involve speaking to NPCs and extracting secret passwords from them.

Thematically ... secret corporations and secret NPCs (but I only had time to implement one of them!)

Wildcards used (optional)

Cheat Mode

Let players break the rules with things like infinite lives or invincibility

This is quite a huge undertaking for a game jam, I'm quite impressed! I won't lie, I did had to rely on the video you posted below the game to go through it, but still it was fun. The mix between playing with the command line and talking to people in plain language is quite fun. Other than that, the music was fitting and the stories behind each character quite well thought of. Good job!

I studied to be a sysadmin, and this game brought back all the Cisco Packet Tracer nightmares: emulators, crashes, and ancient computers — pure nostalgia (┬┬﹏┬┬)
That said, the game is really interesting, and everything works well (though ls and cd commands didn’t work for me). Great job! 👍

Developer

Thanks! It's not very obvious, but the early servers you encounter are deliberately missing all the unix commands, it's only the later servers that have a full bash shell, and then ls, cd, cat, ... etc implemented.

Wow, wow, such a cool interpretation of the theme and excellent execution! The music is amazing and so well-crafted. Thank you for the game!

Cool Game, loved the music, it just takes some time to get used to the mechanics

Reminds me of Grey Hack and hack_me. Good job! The music is very enjoyable. I think passwords in the terminal should be hidden and the NPCs should send messages slower, I was confused at first when "cd" and "ls" commands didn't work in the usual terminal, also installing apps out of nowhere looks scary, like the system is hacked... or is it? It'd be nice to have very necessary commands like "neofetch", "lolcat" or "cmatrix", and maybe multiplayer or something like that.

An amazing, immersive, and deep experience. I’d never played anything like it before, so it took me a bit to figure out the mechanics... but after that, I couldn’t stop! The chats were hilarious. Great job!

Very cool hacking game! I was impressed by the gameplay and the thought put into the design. Nice work!

very fun game! reminds me a lot of hacknet and uplink. You polished this so well. I love that the cmd line actually looks real, and that you can copy paste from all the various windows. Resizable and repositionable windows are really nice touch too.  The chat is so funny to be honest (yes I did insult everyone I talked with), and the radio is a nice feature. I did spam keywords at some point to get a response from my uncle and cousin, but no complaints there.

I'm just sad there isn't more of the game to play, it felt quite short even for a game jam. There are so many apps to use but I didn't end up using a lot of them. I read below that you removed a lot of missions because they were too complex, which makes me sad but I understand. That would also explain why there are many apps that aren't too useful. I did notice that the pet of your cousin changes with every run, which is a nice feature hehe.

Well done! Keep up the good work.

Super cool game, I've never played anything like this and it's a really rad concept. I think some of the hints towards the beginning could be cleaned up a little e.g. nowhere (as far as I could tell) says "reboot" in game for the router so it relies on outside game knowledge to type it in. I had a great time playing this and it's incredibly ambitious. Excellent work!

Based on comments from you and the other playtesters, I've added a whole tutorial (disguised as a 'finish installing your OS' wizard), and in-game hacking manual. Live now if you select 'Gamejam+ tutorial' on startup.

Cool. I think the positive feedback  not enough, I changed the 3 server password then nothing. The servers don't have any valuable file. And then I don't know how to continue(Maybe because my english is bad don't understand the fox mean).  I have some suggestions. 1. Merge some apps. I think the Image Viewer and Text Viewer will make players confused, the 3 apps first add maybe can merge one. 2. Terminal tip input help when player do nothing on long time. 3. The Whassup App remove the A B C contants. They make players confused too. And then the scroll bar will on the left side contants not entire window.

Developer

Thanks, good points. I wanted to hide the Image/Text Viewer, but ran out of time to add 'hidden but usable' apps (they are auto-opened by Documents app so no real need for them to have Icons on the desktop).

The Whassup 3 x contacts were used in the missions I disabled/deleted before submission (still visible in github, but can't be enabled) - they were too complex/difficult without extra help, so I turned them off. Good point that the contacts are confusing, they now hang-around doing nothing.

I actually hate the Whassup app - I spent DAYS trying to get that thing to work properly, but it's still broken with the Unread Counts in multiple ways. I'm going to rewrite it from scratch after the jam, and I think it can be much better.

Byeond that ... it looks like you hit the end of the content I had time to make for the jam - congrats! - but: sorry there was so little :(.

Well. Then the contacts' nick name is mistake.

Incredibly impressive, and immersive. Great work!

Very cool game! It must have taken a long time to get all the logic coded.

The tips in the comments really helped to get things started quickly. Unfortunately, I got stuck after a while and didn’t get a response in the chat. But I’ll try again later.

Well done!

As with the other commenter below: yeah, sorry about that! I created a discord for the game (linked from the ? icon), I'm happy to give step-by-step hints/advice to anyone that needs it. The main issues seem to be:

1. HINT: the start of the manual (in the Documents folder) explains how to 'connect' to a router, and what to type in to reboot it; the other doc has the address + username + password

2. HINT: the NPCs (like your Mom) are very stupid - they only respond to keywords - and they try to literally tell you what to do / what to respond to them. e.g. your Mom wants to know when it's done, so you can say to her "done" (or any variation on that) and she'll re-try the wifi

Submitted(+1)

Oh I see, so apparently the 2. HINT is what I was missing. I always typed something like “does it work now?”

Developer(+1)

(...notes down extra keywords I need to add there :))

After the jam I plan to convert all the NPCs into ChatGPT-driven bots, and then it should be easy to get what you need out of them - they'll steer conversation, and be much much better at accepting responses

Creative concept. But I need a bit more hints.

Developer

Yeah, I failed on that front - the learning curve in first 1 minute is too steep (unless you already know how to use linux or the command line).

pretty interesting concept. It took me some time to understand what I had to do, hehe. But once I rebooted the router, things ran pretty smoothly

Wow, there is so much in this game, even if it wasn't fully finished! Favourite theme interpretation I've played so far. As a fellow React developer I'm impressed by the multi-window gameplay. Great vibes, good difficulty level (for me, although I couldn't find in the wifi manual how to reboot it remotely, thanks for the INSTANT SUCCESS button!) and I kept clicking the emergency shutdown button whenever the threat level reached 90% haha.

This was incredibly impressive to make solo. It's also such a great interpretation of the theme.

Awesome job!

Submitted(+1)

Good work on this! I come from a cyber security background so it’s always fun to see submissions like this one. This was really well done and polished and was fun to play around with.

Submitted(+1)

You made this game solo?! That's very impressive!

A very solid game!

This was super fun and impressive! I really liked the nostalgia this brought back for me as the tech support agent for my family lol. The music is great and the GUI was pretty nice too! You knocked this submission out of the park, I'd totally pay to play a game like this in a full length
