How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
Candy Curfew is an adventure game built in GB Studio for the Gameboy Color.

Our plot centers around a young hero who trick or treating on their own for the first time. Not only is Halloween spooky by nature, but so are the concepts of newfound responsibility and looming time constraints.

What sort of adventures will you have before the clock strikes 8pm?

Best game i've played so far! I love all the minigames and the color palette is very pleasing to look at. Full marks! If you ever sell a cart i'd be interested!

Got 30 pieces and i know i didnt even seen the whole town. That lady with the wax floor was nice as well as the aliens!

We appreciate it. No plans to sell a physical cartridge, but one of our designers did create this cute mock-up of what it might look like.

Feel free to create your own if you happen to own a cartridge flasher. The GBC ROM is available for free download on the page!

Excellent! I do own a Joey Jr so i will go ahead and order an orange cart shell to keep in line with yall's vision!

Wow, what a cool game! I loved all the little sidequests, though I wasn't able to figure them all out in my playthrough. The artstyle is cool and I especially liked the pair dressed like a horse. Poor poor horse butt... such an elobarte costume and doesn't even get candy.

Developer(+1)

Horse costume kids is my favorite character. A truly tragic figure.

Really nice Halloween game! It was great fun! I really like how you used colour for the characters. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! We had actually tried a few different pallets to see what was most decipherable visually and luckily the high contrast Halloween pallet was also very accessible in that regard.

That was a great experience!  I was rushing to cross the highway before curfew and didn't make it in time.  Had to play again to make sure I didn't miss any other areas.

What I'm super curious about personally is if anyone has found the secret BAD ENDING yet...

Loved the simplicity of the art within the game and the colour palette giving that true halloween vibe. Great job.

Developer

Appreciate it! Since adventure/rpgs games have a lot of assets required (especially for environments) we wanted to keep things simple to make sure we got done it time. I think leaning into the 1-bit-ish aesthetic throughout the game made that possible while still looking cohesive.

A masterpiece!

Cute game :)

Cool game! Loved the art and the writing was really good.

Excellent writing! Love the style and how rewarding exploring the town felt.
Got 30 candy myself, I enjoyed the experience a lot!

Developer(+1)

That's a pretty solid score for a first run through! We definitely spent a while discussing how we could make the town feel lively and tried to pull from our own trick or treating experiences growing up. Please note that none of us were abducted by aliens thankfully.

Loved this, I got a bit of an Earth Bound vibe from it, only managed to get 24 bits of candy on my first play though, but I've saved it to my collections to have another go later on.

(He's a tough kid, got hit by at least 8 cars and just carried on, what a trooper! haha)

Not even eight or nine traffic collisions can stop them from a bag full of sweets.

Fantastic little game! Love this little world, so much character and life. Super job

The art was so cute and the writing was really fun. Felt very gameboy like! loved this

Developer(+1)

I personally cannot take credit for the art but will certainly extend the complement to the team!

HOWEVER, I can take credit for the dialogue. Getting told I'm kinda funny is better than any 5-star rating we can receive.

Developer(+1)

I also worked on this game, and my best score so far is 50!

Sweet game!!

It was nice to look at, had fitting music, gameplay was easy to get in to, it was fun to explore the town, nice lil mini-games, and I loved the quirky dialog! Overall, it felt finished, polished even. I enjoyed playing!

Good jam game!

(And not to brag but I got a solid 38 pieces o candy 😎🍬)

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it, and 38 is a pretty great score for a first run!

Great humour! A lot was done here with that simplistic palette too, great job!

Developer

Thanks! We actually look a lot of inspiration from looking at games like Minit and seeing how we could adapt that sort of style to Gameboy.

Developer

I developed this game and my CANDY HAUL HIGH SCORE is 44.

Do you think you can out Trick or Treat me?? (Spoiler alert: you might be able to!)
