How does your game fit the theme?
Our game fits the theme of "roll the dice" by having random generation of characters be the obstacle to the player's success. Because the player has to respond to random generation, it is an integral part of the game's design.

(Fails the quota due to being too busy dressing people up)

"Wait, if you don't get them all in time they just blow up the Earth!? Oh geez, I better try again and save everyone!"

(Reaches the quota)

(It still gets blown up)

"...How DARE-"

In all seriousness though, the art is super cute and I loved playing it.

A fun little game! Wasn't sure why some humans explode, they seem to be "good" ones.
Respect from the fellow programmer for having your own game engine!

Developer

eyy thanks! I'm so happy it seems to run without issues for everyone!

You may be sending humans holding dynamite, or wearing a eye-covered shirt, down to the planet. It's shown in the intro screen that dynamite is considered a "bad" trait, but I would agree that it could be more clearly defined.

i looooove the aesthetics from the art, music and sfx. as for the mechanics though, i don't quite understand why some of the humans i send explode. i'm guessing that i put in a wrong body part but there was no way to tell. despite the simple mechanics i enjoyed the game. great job!

edit: it's the dynamite. didn't know aliens love explosives (well they did blow up the planet in the end). my highest score so far: 117

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the dynamite does not look very alien... we tried to show it in the intro screen (alien side is holding dynamite) but it wasn't communicated enough. Great job on figuring it out though, and getting that amazing score! I can't even get to 100, heh

Really fun game with fantastic art. Played for a bit and managed to get this beefy score. Great job on the game!

Developer

Wow, well done! You beat my high score haha. Thanks for playing!

Hey fun little game, nice art - the generator is fun, good job :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! Nice to hear you enjoyed our game!

A very cute little experience. There's a lot I really liked about this. I liked how there was a little bit of unexpectedness when <spoiler> they explode if they hold tnt </spoiler>, and the art style was great all around. The humor with it was great as well, with some of the combinations being silly along with the dialog at the end. Also, this is a custom game engine? I assume it wasn't made during the jam, but that's still really cool. If I had to make one suggestion it's that this game concept really needed more possibilities for things to come up in the customization. Even with the game's short timer, you tend to see a lot of repeats, which impacts the gameplay.

My best score was 63

Also, I may have been looking around the game files, and I have to say I love the placeholder.png files:

I'm happy you enjoyed it, and thanks for playing! Nice score, you made it to both endings!

Yes, this is made in my own game engine (written before the jam, and used in our game for last year). You can find the source code on my GitHub page. :)

Within the jam's time limit, 2FoamBoards spent a large amount of the time and effort drawing each of the five options we have for each of the five "layers" you can change. Sadly, the 3,125 possible combinations still exhibit visual repeats within the time limit! The human brain is too good at this! I think if we were to remake this game with more time, we could do something similar to the Mii Maker, where you can move elements around as well as changing them. However, I don't know how we would encourage the player to spend time customizing them with the current time limit and goal of getting as many humans on earth as possible... Good criticism, though I'm not sure how we could address it. 😅

eyy you found the placeholder images! We used them to make sure my layered sprite rendering code was working well, and I agree with you that they are too adorable to remove haha. The banana even made it into the final build!

Really funny concept. Cutest in the jam game I've seen so far haha. Had a few goes and managed to get 88.  Really liked some of the character art. The explosion sounds were definitely loud though, aside from the one in the end cutscene. The penalty for getting one wrong felt a bit harsh but I guess the point is to get you to play more carefully and prevent players from just spamming the ufo and being to win like that.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the explosions are a bit loud for when humans explode. They were originally supposed to be staggered randomly over a second or so; when I had to remove that feature due to C++ pointer jank it caused all the explosion sounds to play at once and stack the volume... whoops! Definitely something I will fix post-jam!

The penalty, which is about 1/3 of the humans, was indeed chosen to prevent spamming. In my testing, spamming the UFO with this penalty always leaves you with one or zero humans left, which was my aim so as to clearly communicate that the strategy wouldn't work. However I do agree it can be quite harsh when you have a lot of humans on the planet, so maybe making it a constant number (around 10 humans) could work better to make it less frustrating to shoot for a high score.

Anyways, super happy you enjoyed the concept and the art! Also, congrats on beating my high score :)

Developer(+1)

88 is my high score, too! :D

Funny concept, very polished art and presentation, a cute take on randomness. Good job guys! keep it up ^^

Thank you! We will continue to do our best work. >:D

Hehe, very nice game!

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. :)

I love the art and music, its all amazing!! That aspect of the game feels super polished. There could have been a little more to the gameplay in my opinion, but the game does what its trying to do so I think its fine. Great job!!

Developer

Thank you for playing! Your thoughts pretty much concisely reflect my own feelings on our team's game. :)

I really like the presentation and concept! The music and sound were also really great. Fantastic work!

Cool game!! I like the idea to hide aliens!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm glad you had fun with it. 😁

Great game! I like the concept very much! Great art and music! Great different endings! Best of luck!

Developer

Thank you! Good luck to you as well :)

Wow! Such a cute game, and such a cool concept. I thought humans and aliens are friends, but it turns out nope lol :) Good for you guys for doing everything including the art, music, and sound in just 48 hours. Keep up the good work lads! (Also btw, I noticed that you have some different endings and that your credits screen looks very cool, so I can tell you put a lot of effort into every detail :D keep it goin')

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! It seems that the universe this takes place in does not take kindly to human-alien relations, indeed! Glad you enjoyed it :)

I'm really happy with how the endings turned out, given our engine had no animation system before the jam haha.

Fantastic art, music, and sound! Loved the lil characters and different endings! Great job!

Developer

Thank you for playing, and congrats on getting all the endings!

Great game! It's fun and teaches what a human look like!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! I hope this knowledge serves you well (wait, why do you need to know what a human looks like? are you an alien??)

I love the art style!

Having randomness is different from rolling a dice because we expect the same roll to have the same results. But the gameplay was OK :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

I hadn't thought of dice as distinct from randomness for that reason, hm. What I've used dice for before is to determine a result randomly, so I associated them with randomness as a concept, but it seems that the applications of dice are wider than I had originally thought! Thank you for offering your feedback! ^^

Submitted(+1)

Had some fun with this! It took me a moment to understand, so I failed the first time around. Glad I did, because the end screen was pretty fun. Got 68 humans back on earth in the second run.

It's maybe a little too focused on the random side of things for me, theme-wise, but I think the fact that I enjoyed it counts more :)

Developer

I'm glad to hear that you had fun! This theme was tricker for us than last year's, for sure, but we were certain that we didn't want to do anything with literal dice, so I tried going at the theme by thinking about the motive behind it, which I figured was to get people to play with randomness. Good RNG is hard to do well for games, I've learned!

Fun game. Though I'm not sure if "bad humans" are even human. Plus I don't understand why wearing a T-shirt with eyes immediately classifies you as bad.

Developer

Hmm, this could have been explained more. Basically, you don't want to let anyone with alien parts onto the planet, as the boss would then notice you'd been tampering. The T-shirt with eyes is alien (shown on the right as "bad" in the start screen), so it counts. Post-jam, we may update the start screen to more clearly say this. Anyways, thanks for playing and I'm happy you enjoyed the game!

Developer

By "bad humans,"  my intention was to say that they were unconvincing at being humans. Could any "human" created by the HUMAN GENERATOR™ be truly human? I don't know. It's buggy. So buggy that the unconvincing ones explode! 💥 As for the T-shirt with eyes, because there was a motif of eyes in the alien antenna and skin, I thought that continuing the eyes motif to the shirt would help players understand that they were related. I've seen a lot of atypical clothes... Teacup-shaped mini hats, clear plastic shoes, etc. Shirts with a lot of eyes aren't that out-there, I'll admit, but I have trouble thinking of something that is. 🫠

It admittedly took me one attempt to figure out what the gameplay loop was meant to be, but after that I found it to be pretty fun as a fast-paced recognition test. Great artwork and sound as well.

Developer

Thanks for playing! We made the gameplay session pretty short so as to not be too punishing if you miss some details on the first go (and can get both endings!), so I'm happy the first round wasn't demotivating. It's great to hear you liked the concept, art, and music as well! :)
