This is a game in which a laundromat enjoys popularity similar to a restaurant.
The browser version had a consistent framerate issue, so I went to use the downloadable. I don't like doing this when there is a missing export, but it technically works.
The first 5 levels do a good job teaching you how the game works while the second 5 levels has you playing the game proper. When I got to level 8 (At least I think that's the level I was on), I suffered from the constant stream of things piling up, which forced me to reevaluate several times over which ones went into the laundry first, not even to mention that the shades of blue were starting to blend together. I made it through with a single star, but I could not go on.
For those looking to go even further than I did, you need to organize the clothes on the floor first before committing them to a washing machine so that you don't lose sight of what you're doing. Only run 2 washing machines at a time, trying to run 3 will almost immediately cause the circuit breaker to trip. In a way, this implies that you're using one of the machines as a Laundry Basket.
A strong entry, and for a newcomer no less! Now, I need to rest, that was a little exhausting.
Thank you for your detailed post, and for playing it so extensively!
I realized too late that 2d lights are very gpu instense, and I did not dare to change it fearing I will break the game.
It was indeed my intention to ease the players into how to play the game in the first 5 levels, but I fully expected to have a lot of players reach their limit in the early levels. I was thinking about adding a third action button. But in my own gaming experience it rarely helps in novel scenarios, I still press the wrong buttons when I play a game that has - for me - unusual controls.
One of the things that is not obvious, is that there are only 4 logical colors, there is no difference between blues. You can wash together any kind of blue clothes without a problem. On level 8 you can just put everything together generally. On the other hand in Level 9...
I would have loved to see the cloth organizing you did on the ground. In general I would love to see people struggle, and be overloaded with my game haha.
You can start the washing machines with 5 seconds delay to each other and if you manually stop them once the clothes are drying you can get a lot out of the limited electricity.
If you are interested in a perfect level 8 run, and an almost perfect level 9 I made a playthrough video (level 10 is more of an endurance game):
Perfect Day 8 video
Liked their silly dances and goofy faces when they pick up their laundry. Only criticism I have is more related to the controls, I'd often get confused whether to press E or Space, and there were moments I wanted to put laundry but it turned the machine on and vice versa (since they share the same key input). all in all, one of jam's faves
"I wanted to put laundry but it turned the machine on and vice versa" - I still do it, the unusual controls was part of my idea of overloading the player and having them struggle especially in the later levels. I was thinking about keyboard + mouse controls, or adding another different keys to pick up, put down, start machine, mouse for aiming with the clothes, and maybe I would choose to do that if I realized that "Controls" was one of the voting category. I liked though how clumsy it felt to play with only keyboard, and doing silly mistakes.
What I was also thinking when designing only 2 action buttons is "if my mom would play this she would forget about half the buttons even existed" and thinking it feels better to do the wrong thing than not remembering which button does the thing at all.
I see, the idea flew over my head entirely lol. Regarding having two buttons, I don't think it's bad (especially when considering your idea) and maybe it's more about getting used to the controls on my end rather than them being inherently bad when I think about it lol.
Fun, simple and well executed - a real joy to play, great entry!
Nicely done, controls are simple, concept good, fun and very playable.
Very original! Love the sound, and the graphic style works for running a laundromat--it was endearing! Great work, had a lot of fun!
Throwing clean clothes is the best!
fun game! BEST SOUND EFFECTS EVER
Sweet game! Have these people never heard of coming back after their laundry is done, what's the point of waiting around? ;D
I got to level 9, very fun mechanic having to load balance everything, running back and forward and honestly the vfx and art style is really charming.
I think because of the nature of the jam the game is stressful, it's actually exhausting playing these back to back, but that should be a good indicator for your "theme" score ;)
Enjoyable game, with quite entertaining sound effects :D I like it!
Really like this one. Lots of charm and entertaining concepts like washing the wrong colors together ruining the clothes. Well made.
Fun game! My favourite things were the little noises the people made along with them stood waiting for their clothes. Good polished game, good job!
Great game ! The controls feels really nice and smooth. I love the way you can throw clothes at the customers. It's really polished, there's a lot of details. It's fun and well balanced, congrats.
I had a lot of fun playing this game, great job !
Glad you liked it, thank you!
This game has nice idea, but it is epilepsy triggering, it's constantly blinking on my screen
Haven't encountered this issue yet. #worksonmymachine
Real talk, I made it so every light turn off for a second then on again once in about 3 minutes. It should not be an epilepsy festival. Can you tell me about your machine, and browser?
Chrome 120. Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS 22.04 - X11 - GLES3 (Compatibility) - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (nvidia; 525.147.05) - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor (24 Threads). I will try to send you a video how it looks, but not today, I do not have access to my PC right now
You have a good pc, up to date chrome, a 3 months old nvidia driver. Maybe the game have issue on Linux for some reason. Don't know if I can upload a Linux build after the submissions are closed. Now I wish I did a Windows and a Linux build too.
Thanks for replying :)
The problem is not present anymore. Very interesting and funny game

I felt like the first time I put a washing mashine when I mixed red and white hahahahahha.
Congratulations!!
That's why irl I only had a variation of grey clothes and some blues for a good while haha.
Thank you!
Haha. This was very funny. I loved the voices, and the missing clothes on the people. It took me a few levels to figure out that you could pick up multiple clothes, but that also burned me later when I mixed some light and darks! I loved that you built that in. Also the walking animations are so cute. Really well done!
Also my favorite was demon party.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
I was not sure about Demon Party when testing, it is hard to know if a black cloth is dirty or not, so I was not sure if it is a good idea to have a whole level with just black clothes haha.
