Giving a voice to these kind of thoughts can actually be pretty helpful if you're a compulsive contrarian - maybe I don't want to spiral down a whirlpool of negative thoughts, how about that?

Anyway, there's not really any gameplay here, but the presentation and writing does make up for it, and the concept's pretty original.

I really like the sound and art, especially the clicking of the keyboard. That feels like an very old PC oder some PC out of the Fallout Universe.
I had one moment where i really had to laugh because the AI gave me some insight about myself.

Well done!

Hey man! I've been trying to play and rate all the games from the jam them, due to that not much I have I've been skipping some comments expecting to comeback later, but yours imma comment right away.

Not a fan of the genre, so it was not that fun for me, it did make me laugh a couple of times, so at least I'd say it's funny (even if "dark and negative")

And with those two adjectives I gotta say:
Of what I played so far, although you took a completely different approach than most, I think you trully nailed the theme, kudos my man, 5* on that!

wow uh.. didn't expect life lesson. Was a great story-based experience, thanks for making! Also feels very original for the theme.

I'm haunted by the same thought....

Loved the sound design, the monitor hum, the keystrokes, etc. Super good presentation of the concept. Only thing I felt like it was missing was gameplay, it felt more like a choose your own adventure type situation. The writing was great however, and I think it is exactly what you planned it to be so lets consider it a success.

Glad you enjoyed it! It's very fair to point out the lack of gameplay, it's just a big dialogue tree after all.

I spent a good amount of time on the sounds, but I wish I spent more, feel like the balancing is off especially when playing through speakers. All the sounds are home-made! The monitor hum and beeps were made with tones and noise generation in Audacity. The keyboard sounds were made with an old-school mechanical keyboard I borrowed from a friend.

Thanks for playing!

i like the game! it made me hate the AI. but it didnt say much that i already didnt realise myself.

4.8 out of 5.

just because the robot was annoying.
im looking forward to playing more of your games!

also i hope your doing fine. enjoy your day and i hope you win!

Developer (1 edit)

Hating SUFFER.er is kind of the point lol, so you nailed it. I hate them, too, that's why I made them. Something to reflect on: you say SUFFER.er only said things you knew about yourself, yet you hate them... does this mean you hate yourself? Or perhaps just a part of yourself?

And yes, I'm doing just fine. I posted about some self-reflection I've done during and after making this game, you can read about it in my comment under vpeter1119's comment.

Thanks for playing!

WOW. This is the best game i have played on this jam yet.  The game touched me on another level. The writing is truly beautiful. The idea of haunted tech is so creative.  Even tho you warned me not to play multiple times i did play it and i don't regret it at all. The sound design, the shaders, man everything is done perfectly. Once again just  amazing. This should definetely win.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it so much! <3

Fair, you warned me multiple times in advance, and I still decided to play it, but man, I was still expecting a game, not a psychological gut-punch... But really, great execution of an idea, while it feels hard to achieve a fun gameplay, I think to elicit an emotional response is an even tougher task, and you managed to do that.

The CRT effect is fine, but also bonus points for including the option to turn it off. Did you use a dialog plugin?

Also, how are you doing? Hope you're taking your own advice...

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

I did not use a dialogue plugin, but boy do I wish I had. I checked out Dialogic, which seems very extensible and powerful, but I couldn't get it to do what I wanted it to immediately so I say "screw it I'll make my own system". And while I did make my own system, it's very rudimentary and entering new dialogue was an absolute pain. But it works, and that's what's important.

And yes, I'm doing fine. I know the game is a bit dark, depressing even. But I think making things about your negative feelings can help you process them. This game has been getting a lot a praise so far, and I feel a little flutter in my chest every time someone says "wow this is great!" or, like you, says that they had an emotional response to it. And I have to reflect on that, realize that that's my desire for admiration, and I have to not let it go to my head. Let's just say, if I hadn't made this game and instead made a different game, I probably wouldn't be processing this praise in the same way. Making this game has forced me to shift my way of thinking about making things, hopefully for the better.

Great little musing on the meaning behind what it means to create.

Developer

Happy you enjoyed it!

Surprised that there were several submissions that went with the supernatural “haunted tech,” or as I called it in my notes, “Cyber-Natural.”

Huge amount of polish here. Great work with the shaders for the screen. Sound was done very well, and the options menu is surprisingly built out. I do wish there was a little more variety in the gameplay or some kind of goal, but the dialogue was really well-written, and the epilogue was fun as well.

Nice work!

yeah, i thought it would be less, hence my game is a space shooter with lore. i gotta compete with this game and your game? unlikely we can win.

Developer

Yeah the note about gameplay is fair, there isn't much here. It's just one big dialogue tree at the end of the day. The shader is adapted from this one, and I took the hard black border from this other one. Thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
