Themes
I used the "All Systems Have Broken" and the recent CloudStrike situation for inspiration!

Tools
I used PICO-8 (and Aseprite). I love working in PICO-8 because the limitations of the console help me scope projects.

Lessons
I developed a render pipeline in PICO-8 that allows me to get more creative with drawing layers to the screen! And just playing around with memory mapping in general.

so silly, so fun, so easy to understand, had an absolute blast playing it, i'm now a certified atc, great music, cute graphics, smooooth animations, i really can't say enough. the chill start devolving into attempting-to-sort-everything chaos makes for such a fun and hectic puzzle. this would be such a timesink as a mobile game, but i'm safe for now. again, insane submission, such a fun game

Ah thank you so much for all the kind words!! So glad you enjoy it so much!

So. Bloody. Smooth. <3

Thank you so much friend 💜🙏

Ended with a score of 320. Super cool game, I haven’t played anything like it before! All-around a really great complete package. Loved the music, the art, the zoom-out was super smooth and impressive for this jam, the little laid-back puzzle of pathing airplanes around was really well done, everything was really good! Great job!

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words and for playing my game!! 320 is a fantastic score 💪

Fun game, it quickly gets crowded. I am not very good in it, but it is very well done, great work! :)

EDIT: The music is very catchy, it got stuck in my head. :D

Thank you so much for playing!! So glad you had a good time with it <3

Great game, although I am very bad at it :D

Developer

That’s alright 😂 glad you had fun regardless!

Reached 350 points. A very cozy and fun entry! <3

If looking for some things that could be better: I constantly wanted to observe the situation at the hangar, but the short time between new airplane spawns made it pretty difficult to move camera there (either through iterating over planes or by zooming out). At the same time, I understand it would be difficult to add such feature on the 64x64 canvas :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the suggestion!! I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I’m so glad you had fun playing my little game <3

This is a super fun game! I always love seeing a pixel-perfect zooming feature in these jams, and the puzzle of planning their flight paths is very fun! Nicely done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words!! I do feel very satisfied with how the zoom turned out!!

Submitted(+1)

One of my favorite entries to the jam, it perfectly encapsulates the theme and goes with “the wacky, having fun vibe” all throughout.

Controls are neat, the zoom feature in itself would a feat of programming, having to juggle planes with different speed is stressful in a fun way.

OST is an abosule bop, the whole package here is just perfect.

Developer

Thank you so much Achie!! Was awesome to see you play live on your Twitch!!

A very cute, very fun game! No frills, just directing plane traffic. I think not being able to readjust plane routes once they've been set (or at least, I didn't experiment enough to find such a feature) and also not being able to directly see HOW faster/slower each plane color is, relative to one another, makes it a bit of a guessing game until you've thoroughly internalized the speeds.

I could take a guess, though, that PICO-8's limited input suite (^v<>xc) and internal code memory banks (there's a "token" limit, as I recall) would make it tough to just add all the little bells and whistles you wanted. It helps keep scope from growing out of control, but also can get in the way of an "intuitive to the player" (as opposed to a "concise implementation") solution to XYZ problem.

Whatever. Bravo, I say!

Developer

Thanks Ceph! Planes are color coded, as you probably noticed, but also in the top-left corner of the UI there is a number of arrows that indicate how fast the plane goes :)

And for our differently-sighted friends, who might struggle to differentiate color, each random flight code starts with a prefix unique to its color - BL for blue, RD for red, and YW for yellow!

Thanks so much for playing my game! I should have had a more intuitive guide to the user interface, it’s tripped a few people up.

And lastly, no, there isn’t a way to edit the flight paths once set. That’s part of the puzzle :)

At first, I wasn’t sure how to play the game, but as I experimented and figured things out, it became really enjoyable. I ended up coming back to play it multiple times because I had so much fun. It’s a well-made game, and you did a great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!! I’m glad you were able to pick it up and enjoy it eventually 💜 I hid the tutorial in the pause menu so folks who enjoy discovery could experience the game without instructions but perhaps it was too hidden 😂

This was a lot of fun! Reminds me a lot of Mini Airways.

This is definitely a game I can see myself playing a lot!

very original proposal that reminds me a little of mini metro somewhere ... the game is really cool very successful graphically as usual with Fletch, with very pretty graphics, super fluid animations and little graphic ideas in all corners. bravo a good idea well done

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words and for playing my game!! 💜 I spent the majority of the development time on the UI and animations, glad it was appreciated

I'm a huge fan of the mobile game Planes Control and I never thought about how to make it more of a turn-based game but it makes so much sense and it works so well! Love the polish on this, especially given it was made in PICO-8. The camera works wonders, the polish in the transitions / animations is fantastic and overall the gameplay is just super fun! Really great job, you should post this on the lexaloffle website if you haven't done so already! BTW did you ever try Picotron?

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words!! 💜

Yep, OOPS Airlines is also on the BBS - unfortunately, due to a strange bug in the BBS web player’s code, the game isn’t playable on web there (but doing load #oopsairlines from your PICO-8 terminal or downloading through Splore work fine!)

And yes! I’ve done some tinkering in Picotron and created some tools for folks to use, but haven’t yet created a game. I’m waiting for a little more maturity that we’ll get soon, like HTML exports and binary exports!

Super super super fun, felt like a real airtraffic controller. <3 Super good! Well done!

Very aesthetically pleasing and the zoom out functionality was greatly appreciated. You made all the UI so easily readable and the random flight numbers were a good call too. The music and sfx were all so catchy and charming, it really fit the vibe. Fun gameplay loop and as I saw in your "wishlists" of things you had wanted to add, it's definitely got a lot of potential to be expanded on. Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!! Really appreciate your kind words 💜

Yeah its just a great game what can i say

Thank you so much!! <3

Fun gameplay loop, good visuals, national tragedies. 10/10

Developer

LMAO glad you had a good time! xD

The art in this game is so good! Normally I'd think an abundance of such vivid colors looks too flashy, but it really works with this retro feeling resolution and cute art style. I also enjoy the gameplay and the creative premise behind it.

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words!! I don’t consider myself much of an artist so this means a lot to hear <3

Cute little game especially for PICO-8, the zoom out function was nice. Fun gameplay and I liked the music. Nice work!
