Description
I Imagined a game "Reset Rhythm" where unknown forces would alter your world by twisting space and time...
The game revolve around your quest to understand what's going on and eventually develop the same ability to fix everthing.
This track could be a music video or a trailer for the game I imagined, showing the gameplay and universe of the world with a short story.
Now it's time for you to look for a way to acquire this same power in order to balance things !
Message from the artist:
How I imagined the video trailer : ( it's a colorful and playful world overall !)
0:00 =>The opening of the song is set in space, and some kind of giant distorted portal slowly opens.
0:44 =>The build up leads to these aggressive synths, where mysterious creatures starts flowing everywhere.
It get intense as more ans more are coming while disturbing space and time around them.
The video zoom out to reveal your character alerted by those strange disturbances.
1:13 =>Then, on the switch to the slow piano part, the hero finds himself floating in space, drifting away from the giant portal seen earlier.
1:32 => As those reversed synths lines comes, he is thrown faster ans faster into a tunnel of rainbowish light until the aggresive syht comes back.
1:57 => From now on, along the accelerations/decelerations, he is panickingly trying to avoid the mysterious creatures assailling him.
2:27 => On the following piano part, he finally make it back to home. Everything is messed up, but he finds courage in his friends and somehow finds an artefact. Giving him the power to twist space and time too.
3:16 => So, when the aggressive synth are back, it's him this time ! Escalading in a space light tunnel and crushing every creature on his way.
3:36 => With the arpegiated syth, he gets to the portal and closes it ( or twist or distort ^^) thanks to the artefact.
3:46 => Finally, that last slow part shows everything gowing backwards or being fixed in a happy ending :)
Theme:
How does it fit the theme?
First of all, I took the theme as "Time" and by extension for the game idea I had "Space-Time".
So I made Risset rhythms, accelerations and decelerations to impact and follow the gameplay. Risset rhythms are actually an audio illusion named after Jean-Claude Risset (a French electronic music composer). It is different from accelerating/decelerating the tempo and is harder to acheive.
You can hear it in this song at the begining and at the end. In between parts are just tempo modulations
Overall that was really fun to make !
So this is supposed to convey the idea of time and space distortions that your ennemies and then yourself will be using.
I also alternated between agressive synths for action-battle moments, and airy-spacey piano parts for the fantasy Zelda kind of lore I imagined.
I used Cubase and my Roland synth and went desorganised as I didn't had much time, and well... that felt in the mood with the theme ^^
You get the idea, I toyed around with the tempo to fit the hourglass picture and Time theme! Hope you'll enjoy ! :)
Edit : https://youtu.be/U8_OvsOW_0I => this is the simplest explanation I found about Risset rhythm (Shepard groove as he calls it) for anyone interested.

I'm sad I didn't get to rate it earlier, but this is fantastic, my favorite submission of the jam.
Really fun ride here. I liked how you transitioned all the songs together into one track and provided the play by play as to what would be happening in each segment. Your descriptions fit the music perfectly. The recurring themes were used well, and the variances in tempo and pacing throughout the track was masterfully done. Overall, excellent job!
Yes that was the idea! Haha that would be awesome to develop this game :D I actually learned Godot engine basics but I'm not even close to make a game 😅
Your last sentence means a lot, as I tried to orientate this track quite literally towards the theme, thank you very much for the words! 😊
Holy Synth Heaven!!! Out of all the tracks I've heard this week, the synths in this one might be my favorite. The instruments are so delicious. I need to learn some things from you. The production is so good! The panning is expertly done! There's a lot, but it's so natural and effective, rather than distracting. All the motion throughout the different scenes. I love this!!! Honestly might be my favorite single track of the jam. The only comment I had is I'm not sure whether the assailing creatures are mostly just mysterious or menacing too, but it didn't come across as menacing to me as perhaps intended. Thanks for making and sharing!
Wow thanks! I really appreciate the attention to details you brought here :) I'm happy if you got inspired!
And yes the creatures are supposed to be mysterious and not that menacing as the overall sountrack, and imaginary game are supposed to be 'light hearted'. Like Nintendoish monsters are often cute. But in the end they're supposed to threat this world and you should fight them so yeah, maybe that part didn't work exceptionally well ^^
Overall thank you very much for this comment! Really appreciate :)
great work on this one! i love how you played around with the tempo, i feel like thats a super creative way to incorporate the theme!
i really like the all the reverse and filtered/automated effects you used too.
Thank you! 😊
The sound design and granular effects are super cool... interesting harmonic choices too (was it a bVI bVII I in the aggressive synths section?). The tempo changes are so well carried out. 2:27 section felt so resolute (the modulation was smooth), so did 3:46, anticipating the bVII I cadence (was it a D#m to E/B to F#/C#? I liked it a lot but didn't know what it was).
This is probably one of the most creative pieces I've heard so far, I've also happen to have watched the Jacob Collier livestream on the "Shepard Grooves" (Risset Rhythms) that's an interest concept in rhythm as opposed to pitch and I'm really amazed to see it being actively used.
This is a masterpiece. Well done! OwO
Wow thank you very much, goes right to the heart :)
I'm not used to speak with these I, V, etc cadence terms but if I get I right you might be close. Here is how I see it if it helps :
Song is mainly in F# (at least that resolute section at 2.27 as you said) which the song tries to get to.
Then the aggressive synths parts is structured with D#major, Emajor, F#, then A#maj, Bmaj (first note is the white before C, never sure how to call chords with flats and sharps ^^) and C#maj. - - I just keep that A# note (which is the fifth of the first chord D#) as the upper note on every other chord in that section. 🙄
So same transition happens at 1.13, 2,27 and 3.46. With that nice altered chord composed of tritones - don't know it's name so here are the notes for it D, F, G#, B(flat).
I hope it was clear 😅. Thank you for the detailed feedback. It was a challenge to use this audio illusion but think I managed to get something cool out of it so I'm happy if you liked it!
I was captivated by the swirling synths at the start and then the second part kicked in an it was grand! I really appreciated how these tracks all worked together as one like a pastiche for the full soundtrack. Bonus points for the tempo changes that were masterfully handled and fit the time theme perfectly.
Thank you very much 😊
THIS IS AWESOME! I love the granular sounding synths at the start of the song and the changing tempo throughout. Also damn that piano part coming in is beautiful
Yeah I had fun with those synths :D Thank you!
This is really impressive. I love it! The flowing rhythms and tempos blow my mind. Incredible work!
This was so unique! I didn't even know about Risset rhythms, so thank you for teaching me something new! I was captivated by the twists and turns of your soundtrack - there wasn't a dull moment to be found. Your music gave the perfect space-y vibe too. Well done!
Wow thanks :) Audio illusions are so cool and interesting!
Heck, I didn't even know there is something for the rhytm like Shepard tone for pitch. Interesting! And your music takes great use of it! Great motiv and really interesting space created by this rhytms really took me away!
Yes isn't this amazing?! :D
Thank you! Glad it took you away ^^
Not long ago I learned about shepherd tones, and here we go with the shepherd groove. Fitting.
I really like how this track comes at me in the beginning. Immediately the theme and setting is captured. The risset rhythms (seems like I'm about to learn something new!) and the tempo modulations make this a very fun and unpredictable track to listen to.
Again, I feel you nailed the theme, you made good use of the time you had to make this, amazing stuff!
I'm happy if you discovered something! 😊 Thanks you for the words!
Wow this is such a cool story all compacted into this 5 minutes piece of music! I certainly felt the spacey vibes from the beginning and it was fun hearing the shifts between the floaty music and the more upbeat intense music. I always get nervous around dramatic tempo shifts in my compositions because it’s hard to know how the listener will react to it, but you not only managed to do this well in a way that is not jarring on the ears, but you also managed to use it as a story-telling technique! Bravo! Overall this was really fun to listen to, and the story was fun to read along while listening. Great work and thank you for sharing!
Yes indeed those rhythms were the driving mechanics of this short project! This is actually the part I spent the most time I had with. Accelerating tempo is a thing, but those Risset Rhythm at the beginning and at the end were way more complex to make sound good! I didn't had the time explain the process I went through cause I was moving my living place but I might do it before the vote ends.
Thank you very much :)
A number of different composers used accelerando/rit. to encourage ideas of playing with time, (me included) but I don't think anyone else came close to making as heavy use of it as you did. I got like, radiohead on a dangerously malfunctioning carousel, which is a fantastic mental image. So, thank you for really taking us all the way. No Thom Yorkes or carousels were harmed in the making of this album (I hope).
XD Loved the "radiohead on a dangerously malfunctioning carousel" image! This is ridiculously fun ^^
Thank you very much for this comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the work I put on playing with time in this song :)
Ps : no Thom Yorke were harmed in the making, I promise.
That's impressive! You made an excellent use of transitions and tempo changes to really give a feeling of being twisted!
Such great variations and composition, the whole track kept me on edge all the way through the end! Amazing sound design on the time sweeps, super creative use of tempo variations, panning and chops/tremolos. All in all an amazing experience, definitely gonna listen to this again! Amazing job!
A pleasure to read this thank you! 😊
Very cool tempo changes. I'm loving these chord choices, very mysterious feel. Ooh, the texture change at 2:35. Using some new, more positive chords to indicate courage/the happy ending (If I'm right). This was a journey, great work!
Thank you :)
I love the tempo changes for how natural they feel and comprehensive explanation for each section. Would make for a really well-coordinate intro sequence.
I love the tempo changes a lot, they’re very well executed. And the reverse synths section (1:32-) is my favorite, it’s giving me Radiohead vibes, so cool! I also just love how this one song is telling a whole story, that made it even more fun to listen through. I think this is a really nice take on the theme, great work! :)
Hey thanks! It's funny that I was listening to Pyramid Song few days before composing and unintentionally the reversed part of the main theme in my track turned out to sound a lot like it x)
I could make only one song this time so I went like 🤯 haha, glad you liked it and thank you for the words!
having just one song that changes dynamically to the plot is a super cool idea. reading the story while listening to the music was a lot of fun!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate! I'm happy you enjoyed the whole thing!
